Mysterious Red Glow Over the Pacific Ocean Is Straight Out of “Stranger Things”

A now-viral Reddit thread shows photos of three red, glowing lights peaking through clouds directly above the Pacific Ocean.

The eerie images were taken by pilot Dustin Maggard at a distance of nearly 31,000 ft in the air. “We had no idea what we were looking at. We were making jokes about being in the middle of some sort of military exercise or some sort of alien invasion,” Maggard later told CNN.

As soon as the photos were posted, Reddit commenters had a field day proposing their own theories; some guessed it was UFOs, while others likened the glow to the portal to the Upside Down in “Stranger Things.”

Niel Jacobs, a weather modeling expert, might ultimately have the right answer. He told CNN that the glowing spots were caused by commercial fishing vessels that had been using bright-red LED lights to capture saury, a type of mackerel fish, and even had geographic data from GlobalFishingWatch.org to prove it.

Jupiter glows in new James Webb Space Telescope raw image

The observations turn Jupiter on its side.

Jupiter always shines, even when seen sideways in unprocessed data.

Astronomers are busy poring through new data from the James Webb Space Telescope (nicknamed Webb or JWST) in a continuing rush to spot ever-more-distant galaxies. But the observatory is continuing to study plenty of objects closer to home.

Among the targets of those observations is Jupiter. NASA released a handful of early JWST images of the massive planet on July 14, but the telescope has continued to revisit the planet thanks to a program meant to demonstrate JWST's potential to study our own solar system as well as the distant universe.

And that potential is on display in a raw image snapped by the telescope's Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) instrument on July 27, 2022, that highlights Jupiter's massive storm, famous the Great Red Spot, as well as bands in the planet's atmosphere.

And the image, along with Webb's other observations, are designed to help scientists(opens in new tab) understand that atmosphere, tackling tasks like characterizing its thermal structure and layers, as well as studying phenomena like winds and auroras.

To create the new image, NIRCam stared at Jupiter for nearly 11 minutes using what scientists call the F212N filter, which observes light that has a wavelength of 2.12 microns, about the length of a common bacterium(opens in new tab). The filter earned its place on the observatory because scientists can use its data to study molecular hydrogen(opens in new tab).

According to a preliminary schedule(opens in new tab) released by the Space Telescope Science Institute in Maryland, which operates JWST, the observatory's targets for next week include Jupiter's volcanic moon Io, the large asteroid Hygeia and the supernova remnants Cassiopeia A.

However, observation schedules are always subject to change. In addition, not all of JWST's data is being immediately made public; for much of its observations, the scientists who requested the data get special access for one year to facilitate their analysis.

Around 100 firefighters tackle grass fire near Heathrow airport

Around 100 firefighters are tackling a grass fire near Heathrow airport, the London Fire Brigade have said.

Videos of the surrounding area show a big plume of grey smoke rising into the sky as planes fly overhead.

In a tweet, the London Fire Brigade said: “15 fire engines and around 100 firefighters are tackling a grass fire near Hatton Road in Feltham.”

Around six hectares of land are alight and producing a large amount of smoke, they added. They called for residents in the local area to keep their windows and doors closed.

In an update on social media, Heathrow noise, an account which publishes live updates on the airport’s runway operations, said: “Due to smoke from a fire off-airport we will be switching back to landing on the northern runway (27R) and taking off from the southern runway (27L). We apologise for the disruption.”

A Heathrow spokesperson said: “Due to an off-airport fire, we have alternated our runways this afternoon. The fire is not impacting the operation and flights are continuing as scheduled.”

The emergency services received more than 30 calls about the fire. Station Commander Paul Casey, who is at the scene, said: “The fire is producing a large amount of smoke. Residents in the local area, particularly around Bedfont Sports Club, should keep their windows and doors closed.”

The cause of the fire is not known.
