NorthShore agrees to pay $10.3 million settlement in COVID-19 vaccine lawsuit over religious exemptions

As part of the settlement, NorthShore is agreeing to rehire workers who were fired for refusing to get vaccinated for religious reasons.
NorthShore, like other hospital systems, will still require its workers to be vaccinated against COVID-19, but, as part of the settlement, it is changing its exemption policy. Moving forward, it will review individual workers’ requests for religious exemptions, and if those exemptions are approved, NorthShore will work to accommodate them, regardless of their positions.
The workers had alleged that, at one point, NorthShore was denying almost all exemption requests and, when it began approving them, was telling employees they’d have to work remotely. Many jobs that involve direct patient care cannot be done remotely.

NorthShore to pay $10.3M in COVID vaccine settlement
A conservative Christian organization says it has settled class action lawsuit against Evanston-based NorthShore University HealthSystem on behalf of more than 500 current and former hospital employees who had objected to the system’s mandatory COVID vaccination policy on religious grounds.
About half of those employees either quit or were let go. The rest took the shots.
Florida-based Liberty Counsel released a copy of the $10.3 million settlement, which was filed on Friday morning in federal court in Chicago.
Liberty Counsel founder and chairman Matt Staver told Evanston Now that this “is a big wakeup call for employers,” that there can be “no blanket dismissals” of everyone who requested a religious exemption from the COVID vaccinations.
In a statement, Liberty Counsel said this was a first-of-its-kind class action settlement in the nation for health care workers related to COVID shot mandates.

Best-selling horror author Stephen King testified against Penguin Random House’s proposed $2.18 billion acquisition of Simon & Schuster, saying it would weaken competition in the publishing industry.
