(1/7) Pro-Lifers, it was a tough night in Kansas. There are still more votes to be counted, but things do not look good for the "Value Them Both" Amendment.
Please do not despair, this was going to be an uphill battle for pro-lifers for a couple reasons.
(2/7) First, a good body of academic research shows that money plays a large role in who wins statewide ballot propositions.
Since abortion is a multi-billion dollar industry subsidized by taxpayers, our opponents can almost always outspend us.
(3/7) Second, history shows that for pro-lifers to prevail in a statewide ballot campaign, two conditions have to hold
1) The campaign must take place in a red state
2) The pro-life policy change must be incremental and difficult to caricature or demonize
(4/7) Tonight the first condition held, but the second one did not. The implications of "Value them Both" were unclear and that made it easier for our opponents to distort the measure.
(5/7) It is also important to note that the mainstream media coverage of abortion post-Dobbs has become more biased and more partisan than ever.
That did not help.
(6/7) If the KS State Supreme Court mandates the KS Medicaid program start funding elective abortions or strikes down a gestational age limit â I would return with a narrower ballot proposition to reverse that decision.
That would be much easier for pro-lifers to win.

They always do this with republicans, have multiple contenders where dems may have one. They pay people to run to split the vote
Iâm not there us plenty of time, i was saying the Republicans do this all the time, Robson a billionaire pays people tp get on the race sp they dilute the vote of the one that will win head to head. Iâve mostly seen this with vulnerable republicans

Pelosi receives medal of honor
Taiwanese leader praised the US House Speaker for her unwavering support of the island
(Oh shit shes the new No Name, that canât be good)
Amid fierce protests from Beijing, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has reiterated Washingtonâs commitment, solidarity and determination to protect democracy in Taiwan, during a meeting with the islandâs leader Tsai Ing-wen in Taipei on Wednesday.
âThe speakerâs courage and actions are deeply inspiring and touching,â Tsai said, according to the South China Morning Post, as she presented Pelosi with one of the highest-rank civilian awards â the Order of Propitious Clouds with Special Grand Cordon â for her firm stance in âsafeguarding freedom, democracy and human rights.â
Accepting the award, Pelosi said that Washington âwill not abandon our commitment to Taiwan,â while praising Tsai as a role-model âwoman president in one of the freest societies in the world.â
In turn, Tsai vowed to remain a reliable US partner and to âfirmly uphold our nationâs sovereignty and continue to hold the line of defense for democracy at the same time.â
The ceremony took place shortly after Pelosi held a closed-door meeting with deputy speaker Tsai Chi-chang and other members of Taiwan's parliament earlier on Wednesday.
The visit of the third highest-ranking figure in the US government to the island, which Beijing considers to be inalienable part of Chinaâs territory, prompted a harsh reaction from the mainland.
After Pelosi landed on Tuesday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said the trip would have a âsevere impact on the political foundation of China-US relationsâ and âseriously infringes upon China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.â The ministry also summoned US Ambassador Nicholas Burns to lodge an official protest, warning that Washington âshall pay the price.â
In the meantime, the Chinese Defense Ministry announced a series of military exercises and live-fire drills in six large maritime areas and their air space around Taiwan.
Pelosi is the first speaker of the US House or Representatives to visit Taiwan in over two decades. Taiwan, which officially calls itself the Republic of China (ROC), has been self-ruled since the 1940s but has never officially declared independence from Beijing.

Donbass fighting is âhellâ â Zelensky
The president says Ukrainian forces canât break Russiaâs advantage in artillery and manpower
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said on Tuesday that the fighting in Donbass was âhell,â claiming that Kievâs military remained heavily outgunned and even outnumbered by Russia and appealing to the US and its allies for even more weapons such as the HIMARS rocket launchers.
In a five-minute address to Ukrainians, Zelensky thanked US President Joe Biden and NATO for sending the rocket artillery, calling it âvery effectiveâ and vowing to inflict âmore painful lossesâ on the Russians, whom he described as a âhordeâ of invaders.
âThe word âHIMARSâ has become almost synonymous with the word âjusticeâ for our country,â Zelensky said.
The US has sent 16 of the High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems to Ukraine so far. Russia said it had destroyed four of them, though Ukraine and the Pentagon have denied this. Zelensky added that he was expecting even more weapons from the West and thanked the Ukrainian diplomats trying to arrange for additional shipments.
âYet we are unable to break the Russian armyâs advantage in artillery and manpower, and this is very much felt in the fighting, especially in Donbass. Peski, Avdeevka, other directions ⌠Itâs just hell there. It cannot even be described in words,â the Ukrainian president added.
The two towns near Donetsk, heavily fortified since 2015, have seen heavy fighting over the past week. On Tuesday, Ukrainian journalist Yuriy Butusov, embedded with the military in Donbass, posted an expletive-laden report from Peski calling it a âmeat grinder.â Butusov infamously filmed himself firing a cannon on the Donbass âseparatistsâ last year.
âThere is no counter-battery fire, none at all,â he wrote on Tuesday. Russian forces were firing â6,500 shells per f****g village in less than 24 hours. Itâs been like this for six days now, and itâs hard to fathom how any number of our infantry remain alive under this barrage.â
Ukrainian troops were holding the line, Butusov claimed, but âwithout counter-battery fighting, it turns into a senseless meat grinder, where huge numbers of our infantry are chewed up in one day.â According to Butusov, a reserve platoon that tried to advance was taken apart in minutes, with only one out of 15 men left unharmed.
âAll the reserves are spent, the military equipment goes up in flames, and the enemy approaches and takes our positions without any problems after another barrage of artillery,â he wrote. âRight now we are losing PĂŠski, all our human and material capabilities are almost exhausted.â
While Zelensky did not go into this much detail, he did say that of the 167 service members he was decorating this week, 32 would get their awards posthumously.

US sanctions Russian âSilicon Valleyâ
Ukraine-related embargo targets Skolkovo and Russian tech sector in general
Washington on Tuesday announced a new round of embargoes targeting Russiaâs finance and technology sectors, in particular the semiconductor industry. Among the entities sanctioned by the State Department are the Skolkovo technology park outside Moscow â Russiaâs equivalent of Silicon Valley â and MMK, one of the worldâs largest steel producers.
The Skolkovo Foundation, Technopark Skolkovo LLC and the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) found themselves blacklisted for âoperating or having operated in the technology sector of the Russian Federation economy.â
Also targeted by the State Department sanctions was the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MFTI), for âoperating or having operated in the defense and related materiel sector,â specifically developing drones for use by the Russian military.
The Treasury Department said the new US sanctions were targeting âKremlin-connected elites, a major multinational company, and a sanctions evasion operation, as well as one yacht.â The embargoed âelitesâ and businesses operate in âeconomic sectors that generate substantial revenue for the Russian regime,â the Treasury said.
The sanctioned yacht is Alfa Nero, a Cayman Islands-flagged ship belonging to the newly sanctioned Andrey Guryev. He is the founder of PhosAgro, the leading Russian manufacturer of chemical fertilizer. The company itself has not been sanctioned, the Treasury hastened to note.
Alfa Nero âhas reportedly shut off its location tracking hardware in order to avoid seizure,âthe US government added.
Among the 13 individuals and 30 entities sanctioned on Tuesday is Viktor Rashnikov, majority owner and chairman of the board of MMK, along with the Magnitogorsk-based steel-maker itself. MMKâs finance division and the Turkish-based MMK Metalurji subsidiary were also embargoed. Americans who have open business with MMK have until September 1 to wrap it up, and until October 3 to divest any debts. The deadline for dealing with the Turkish company is January 31, 2023.
The most notable name on the list of âelitesâallegedly close to the Kremlin is Alina Kabaeva. The retired rhythmic gymnast and former lawmaker was sanctioned for having been a government official, having a âclose relationshipâ to President Vladimir Putin, and being the head of the National Media Group, âa pro-Kremlin empire of television, radio, and print organizations.â
Back in 2015, British tabloids spread the rumor that Kabaeva was Putinâs secret lover, after the Russian president was not seen in publicfor over a week â having been on holiday.

Russia rejects ânuclear saber-rattlingâ accusations
Conflict in Ukraine falls short of Moscowâs nuclear threshold, but NATO involvement could change that, envoy says
Russiaâs doctrine for use of nuclear weapons is very clear and the current conflict in Ukraine does not meet any of its criteria, Moscowâs envoy to the UN nonproliferation review conference said on Tuesday. Alexander Trofimov also rejected a series of claims by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken as âutterly unfoundedâ speculation, perhaps intended to fuel âanti-Russian hysteria.â
âWe would also like to strongly reject the utterly unfounded, detached from reality and unacceptable speculations that Russia allegedly threatens to use nuclear weapons, particularly in Ukraine,â Trofimov said on Tuesday, using the right of reply to address the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) review conference in New York.
Russiaâs nuclear doctrine is âexplicitly clear,âenvisioning their use only to attacks involving weapons of mass destruction or a conventional aggression endangering the stateâs existence, Trofimov said. âNeither of these two hypothetical scenarios is relevant to the situation in Ukraine.â
The Russian diplomat condemned âunscrupulous interpretationsâ of Moscowâs decision to put its nuclear deterrent on alert earlier this year, saying the grounds for it were âconfrontational actions and provocative statements by representatives of Western nuclear powers about the possibility of NATO interference in military actions in Ukraine against Russia.â
While he did not name the accusers, Trofimovâs response specifically addressed the claims by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who on Monday accused Russia of âreckless, dangerous nuclear saber-rattling,â to âthose supporting Ukraineâs self-defense.â
Blinken also accused Russia of violating the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, which guaranteed Ukraineâs independence in exchange for giving up Soviet nuclear weapons left on its territory.
According to Trofimov, âRussia has strictly fulfilled its obligationsâ under the memorandum, âincluding in recent months,âwhile Kievâs statements about obtaining nuclear weapons âcall into question the viabilityâ of the 1994 document. Ukraine has also violated the memo for âmany years,â in particular regarding provisions against âaggressive nationalism and chauvinism,â he added.
Blinkenâs interpretation of the Russian leadershipâs statements as a threat to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine is âunscrupulous and does not stand up to any criticism,âTrofimov argued. They were directed at NATO, as a way to deter the West from direct aggression against Russia in the context of the Ukrainian crisis, he added, noting that the West has already âmoved towards a fierce hybrid confrontation and dangerously balances on the edge of open military clash.â
Such a move would be able to trigger one of the two emergency scenarios described in our doctrine. We obviously stand for preventing this, but if Western countries try to test our resolve, Russia will not back down.
The Russian mission to the UN has already objected to Blinkenâs accusation that Moscow is using the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant as a âhuman shield,â pointing out on Monday evening that the Ukrainian side has been targeting the plant, Europeâs largest, with artillery and explosive drones in recent weeks.
Trofimov also felt compelled to note that âonly one country in the world actually used nuclear weapons â it was the United States, which dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, even though this has not reasons from the point of view of military expediency and was in fact a testing of weapons of mass destruction on Japanese cities and their inhabitants.â

Serbiaâs president expects ânothingâ from talks with Kosovo
Still, Aleksandar Vucic has confirmed he will partake in the upcoming negotiations hosted by Brussels
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic expects ânothingâ from the upcoming talks with Kosovo, which were announced after the fresh flare-up between Belgrade and the breakaway region.
Speaking with the RTS TV channel on Tuesday, Vucic launched a personal attack against Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, stating the latter has clearly shown his attitude towards Belgrade and those who believe it was possible to maintain peace with the region are bitterly mistaken.
âI will go to Brussels, itâs not difficult for me, I donât expect anything. Whoever thinks that it is possible to preserve peace with Kurti, I believe they are very wrong, I know who I am dealing with,â Vucic said.
Tensions soared between Belgrade and Pristina over the weekend, when the authorities of the breakaway region planned to ban the use of Serbian-issued license plates and ID papers starting from August 1 and enforce the measure with its police units. Belgrade called it an attack on Kosovoâs Serbian population as Vucic accused Pristina of infringing on the rights of local Serbs. Kurti, in turn, has accused local ethnic Serbs of attacking the police and claimed Kosovo had been facing âSerbian national-chauvinism.â
The crisis was put on hold after Washington called on Kosovo to postpone the implementation of the controversial rules until September 1. âTwo days ago, in Kosovo and Metohija, we were one step away from disaster,â Vucic said, referring to the region by its official name.
The president also accused Kosovo authorities of political opportunism, alleging that they saw the ongoing Ukrainian crisis as a good time to reach their own goals.
âThe bottom line is that some people in the region think that when there is general hysteria over the war in Ukraine, it is possible to achieve their goals,â Vucic stated.
NATO occupied Kosovo in 1999, after a 78-day bombing campaign against what was then Yugoslavia. The region unilaterally declared independence in 2008 with the support of the US and many of its allies. The breakaway region, however, has not received universal support, as it is not recognized by Serbia, Russia, China, and the UN as a whole.
