Many workplaces and occupations MANDATE union membership as a prerequisite to holding that job. That does not fit the usual definition of "voluntary."

The thing is, he didn't really "get out there." I live in the district in which he ran, and his candidacy was very low-key. No mailers, no signs, no appearances, no door-knocking, no phone-bank-calling. His campaign web page just solicited money and had no information about CM's stances on any major issues. I even reached out to his campaign through the web site, offering to volunteer to help with the campaign - no reply. I have to conclude he didn't WANT to win. Perhaps his candidacy was merely a role in the movie we're all watching.

Campaign finance laws ARE extremely complex and corrupt. They seem to be designed to provide a way to hurt any candidate they want, whenever desired. The laws are not enforced fairly or uniformly. This forces a serious candidate to hire a campaign finance lawyer and accountant in order to fund-raise.
Also, the financial disclosure rules are very invasive - they allow a candidate ZERO privacy. ALL their personal wherewithal is put out on the internet to be used against the candidate as the dark forces see fit. It's enough to discourage men of good character from seeking public office.
