Senator Collins; The idea that any vice president could have the power to unilaterally accept, reject, change, or halt, the counting of electoral votes, is antithetical to our constitutional structure, and basic democratic principals.
Senator Cruz: I have zero doubt that if pro-life supporters were vandalizing and firebombing abortion clinics across the country, DOJ would declare it a national emergency, and you may well send out the National Guard. But because your politics, and the politics of the agency you work with happen to agree with the vandals, there has been no task force, there has been no priority. Why is that?
Kenneth Polite [assistant attorney general for the criminal division, USDOJ]: It doesn't take a task force to have a prioritization.
Cruz: Have any case been brought?
Polite: I cannot comment on the existence of any current or pending investigations at this time.
Cruz: Well, you are here commenting on the existence when it meets the political priorities of the White House.
