US Has No DNA Confirmation of Ayman al-Zawahiri’s Death

The White House says it has 'visual' confirmation and confirmation through 'other sources'

The White House said on Tuesday that it has no DNA confirmation that al-Qaeda’s top leader Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed in a CIA drone strike in Kabul over the weekend and said it had confirmed his death by other means.

“We do not have DNA confirmation. We’re not going to get that confirmation. Quite frankly, based on multiple sources and methods that we’ve gathered information from, we don’t need it,” White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told CNN.

“We have visual confirmation, but we also have confirmation through other sources,” Kirby added.

President Biden announced the drone strike on Monday and said US intelligence had located Zawahiri earlier this year and that he recently moved to downtown Kabul. Zawahiri was reportedly living with his family in a safe house in Kabul’s Sherpur neighborhood, where the US embassy used to be located.

After Biden announced the drone strike, an administration official told reporters that US intelligence had “high confidence” that the person who was killed in the strike was Zawahiri. The US has a history of killing civilians in its drone strikes, but Biden said none were harmed, and there have been no reports from the Taliban of civilian casualties.

The Taliban have condemned the US drone strike and said it violated the Doha agreement, while the US said Zawahiri’s presence in Kabul meant the Taliban didn’t live up to the deal. The Taliban account of the strike matches the US account, although they have not confirmed that it was Zawahiri who was killed.

Rand Paul Calls For “Restrictions On Exporting DNA Technology To Communist China”

Says he has assembled “an elite group of scientists” to testify at gain of function hearing

Senator Rand Paul has called for restricting the exporting of DNA technology to China in the same way nuclear technology to the Communist regime is restricted.

Speaking on Fox News Tuesday, Paul was explaining the intentions of his Senate Health Committee Gain of Function hearing, which begins today.

“Before we even get whether the virus came from a lab we have to explore, were they doing gain-of-function research?” Paul said.

The Senator continued, “Were they taking viruses, mixing them with unknown viruses and creating more lethal viruses or viruses that were more infectious or transmissible. I say without question they were doing this. Anthony Fauci says they weren’t.”

Paul further noted, “Tomorrow we will have the first gain-of-function hearing on Capitol Hill, the first exploration of this topic in two years. A million Americans died and we have not had one single hearing.”

“Tomorrow we have the first hearing and I’ll ask three scientists, very esteemed scientists, scientists with hundreds of peer-reviewed papers, editors of journals. This is an elite group of scientists that will be there tomorrow,” Paul asserted.

“I’m going to ask them was it gain-of-function research that was going on in Wuhan. That doesn’t prove it came from a lab but it proves that dangerous research was happening there and that it could have come from a lab,” the Senator vowed.

“My question is even if we don’t know for certain, let’s say it is 50/50, that’s still a big probability that it came from a lab. At that point, wouldn’t we want to make sure we’re controlling [it]?” Paul further urged.

He further explained “We have restrictions on exporting nuclear technology. Should we have restrictions on exporting DNA technology to Communist China? I think yes.”

Update(9:57ET): Less than a half-day after Nancy Pelosi's departure from Taiwan on a US Air Force plane, a large group of 27 Chinese PLA planes breached Taiwan's air defense identification zone Wednesday, crucially with at least 22 of the aircraft reported as having crossed the Taiwan Strait "median line".

A map posted to Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense showed the brief crossovers by the PLA jets. In response, the ministry said it issued radio warnings and readied air defense missile systems to monitor the activities. Taiwan previously said it won't hesitated to deploy its armed forces to thwart "enemy threats". Already as Pelosi's plane was inbound yesterday from Malaysia Chinese planes and ships had buzzed the median line, which demarcates what the self-ruled island deems its own territorial waters.

Kidnapped 12-year-old escapes captivity, leads authorities to suspect and corpses

A 12-year-old girl was spotted by a motorist around 8:30 a.m. on August 1 walking down County Road 34, south of Dadeville, Alabama. According to court documents, the girl had been kidnapped, bound, and drugged, but after a week in captivity managed to gnaw her way through the bindings and escape.

Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett called the girl a "hero," though elected not to elaborate further for fear of jeopardizing "the identification of our juvenile" and what he suggests is a "fluid investigation."

The motorist who initially picked up the girl immediately called 911. Shortly thereafter, the girl was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, where she is said to be safe and doing well.

710 WOR reports that the Tallapoosa County sheriff's department's investigation into her kidnapping — assisted by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's State Bureau of Investigations, the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI, and a number of other agencies — led authorities to the Auburn home of 37-year-old Jose Paulino Pascual-Reyes.

In Reyes' house, 25 miles away from where the girl was found, investigators found two decomposing bodies. He is believed to have lived with others in the house since February.

Sheriff Abbett said that the remains presently reside at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences pending their identification and refused to comment upon whether the victims were related to the 12-year-old, who had not been reported missing.

Reyes was taken into custody in Auburn by U.S. Marshals and the Auburn Police Department and was later transported to Tallapoosa County Jail. He has been charged with first-degree kidnapping, three counts of capital murder, and two counts of abuse of a corpse in connection with the bodies.

When asked whether authorities expect to find additional bodies, Tallapoosa County District Attorney Jeremy Duerr said, "We expect additional charges just based on interviewing all participants."
