EU Protecting its companies in Iran

The EU is taking steps to protect European companies investing in Iran against the renewed US sanctions on Tehran after US President Donald Trump decided to unilaterally withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal late last month.

“The European Commission said it has adopted an update of the Blocking Statute and of the European Investment Bank (EIB)’s External Lending Mandate. The move follows up on the informal Leaders’ Meeting in Sofia, as well as the Commission’s announcements of May 18,” wrote New Europe website on Monday, IRNA reported.

“These measures are meant to help in protecting the interests of EU companies investing in Iran and to demonstrate the EU’s commitment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),” the Commission said in a press release.

“Through the update of the Blocking Statute, the extraterritorial sanctions that the United States will re-impose on Iran are added to its scope, while the update of the EIB’s External Lending Mandate would make Iran eligible for investment activities by the EIB,” the European Commission said on June 6, adding that this enabling.measure does not however commit the EIB to actually support projects in Iran as it remains for the EIB’s governing bodies to decide to take up such financing activities – in line with relevant rules and procedures.

Following the adoption on June 6, the European Parliament and the Council will have a period of two months to object to these measures before they enter into force. If no objection is raised, the updated acts will be published and will enter into force at the latest at the beginning of August, by the time the first batch of re-imposed US sanctions will take effect, the Commission said.

“The European Union is fully committed to the continued, full, and effective implementation of the JCPOA, so long as Iran also respects its obligations. At the same time, the European Union is also committed to maintaining cooperation with the United States, who remains a key partner and ally,” the Commission said.

According to the New York Times, in a letter sent on June 4 to US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, EU leaders cited “security interests” in requesting that companies in Europe be granted an exemption from renewed US sanctions against Iran.

“In their current state, US secondary sanctions could prevent the European Union from continuing meaningful sanctions relief to Iran,” said the letter, signed by the finance and foreign ministers of Britain, France, and Germany and EU foreign-policy chief Federica Mogherini.

The EU has criticized Trump’s decision to pull out of the Iran deal and have tried to work with the US State Department to find a solution for the European companies working in Iran, wrote New Europe.

Given the announcement of new US sanctions, Total said it will not be in a position to continue the SP11 project and will have to unwind all related operations before November 4 unless Total is granted a specific project waiver by the US authorities with the support of the French and European authorities. This project waiver should include protection of Total from any secondary sanction as per US legislation.

Had to share this, Iran is using this fake pic, along with "A Special Place in Hell" for this article interesting:

The United States and Canada swung sharply towards a diplomatic and trade crisis on Sunday as top White House advisers lashed out at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau a day after US President Trump called him “very dishonest and weak.”

The spat drew in Germany and France, who sharply criticized Trump’s decision to abruptly withdraw his support for a Group of Seven communique hammered out at a Canadian summit on Saturday, accusing him of destroying trust and acting inconsistently, Reuters reported.

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland responded to the White House assault by saying ad hominem attacks are not helpful, that Canada will retaliate to US tariffs in a measured and reciprocal way and that Canada will always be willing to talk.

“Canada does not conduct its diplomacy through ad hominem attacks … and we refrain particularly from ad hominem attacks when it comes from a close ally,” Freeland told reporters in Quebec City on Sunday.

Trump’s summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un heightened tension, and White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow accused Trudeau of betraying Trump with “polarizing” statements on trade policy that risked making the US leader look weak on the eve of the historic North Korea summit.

Hours after Trump withdrew his support for the joint statement and attacked Trudeau, White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow and trade adviser Peter Navarro drove the message home on Sunday morning news shows in an extraordinary assault on a close US ally and neighbor.

“(Trudeau) really kind of stabbed us in the back,” Kudlow, the director of the National Economic Council who had accompanied Trump to the summit of wealthy nations on Saturday, said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Trump-Kim summit : Former NBA star Dennis Rodman arrives in Singapore

SINGAPORE (REUTERS) - Former US National Basketball Association star Dennis Rodman arrived in Singapore late on Monday (June 11) for a summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, saying he was "excited to be part of it".

There has been no indication Rodman would be involved in any official talks at the summit, which is aimed at getting North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons and missiles in exchange for economic incentives and security guarantees.

"It should go fairly well, but people should not expect so much for the first time," Rodman told reporters at the airport.

"The doors are opening."

Trump, asked last week if Rodman had been invited to Singapore, said, "No, he wasn't."

Rodman is one of a handful of Westerners to have visited reclusive North Korea and met Kim. He most recently travelled there a year ago as a private citizen.

After that five-day visit, Rodman told reporters, "I'm just trying to open the door."

This trip, like the last one, is sponsored by potcoin.com, the crypto-currency provider for the legal marijuana industry, Rodman said on Twitter.

Before Trump became president, Rodman appeared twice on his Celebrity Apprentice show and praised the billionaire real estate developer on Twitter during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Rodman has faced ridicule and criticism for his trips to North Korea, which some US politicians and activists view as serving only as fodder for North Korean propaganda.

His earlier visits to North Korea included a basketball game he organized, an event chronicled in the documentary film Big Bang in Pyongyang, which featured Rodman singing "Happy Birthday" to Kim, as well as scenes of inebriated and erratic behavior by the basketball Hall of Famer.
