I've had a friend for about 20 years who's got a favorite line whenever you're challenging something stupid he's done, usually related to intoxication, as he's been and on-again-off-again [sloppy] drunk half of those 20 years. In fairness, so was I. His line:

"YOU THINK I'M A PIECE OF SHIT, DON'T YOU!? IS THAT WHAT YOU'RE SAYIN'? THAT I'M A PIECE OF SHIT!? IS THAT WHAT YOU THINK OF ME, THAT I'M A PIECE OF SHIT!?!?"

It's a move I think is similar to the person with dozens of failed suicide attempts. They want coddled. They want assuaged. He wants me to say (and I always did before), "No, of course you're not a piece of shit, but your behavior… [whatever applied]." Recently, I started just abruptly and pretty unemotionally agreeing with him. "Yes. You've been telling me that about yourself for 20 years and often acting in line with it, so yeah, I guess you are." I think I'm just going to agree with him every time he says it from here on out. He's a lib… and as Eric Holder told us, "When they tell/show you who they are, believe them." <paraphrasing

Maybe this deserves some similar reaction. Muh racism and muh white supremacy has lost all its seriousness. Not sure of the specifics of my attempted parallel… would need perfected… maybe it's just a bad idea that doesn't translate.
