We sometimes forget that Taiwan was indentured by the Japanese during WWII. They were so pissed at being beaten by the USA, they released poisonous snakes into the mountainside where their original inland fortifications stood. The treasures of Bejing were removed by the Kumonitang to Taipei and it's surrounding tunnel systems dug into the mountain. CHYNA has an odd culture where despite being supposedly communist the mass of peasants expect it is ordained by heaven and that when the current leadership violates that divine providence they will be overthrown and completely destroyed. Hence Mao's cultural revolution was a subversion of that thought. So the question is (Whom?) do the chinese peasants think have the favor of heaven to rule. I know we can't comprehend the 100's of millions still illiterate in rural china or only given rudimentary skills, but it is almost 3x the population of the USA.
