Trump, Kim Jong Un shake hands in historic first meeting
SINGAPORE — President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un exchanged a historic handshake just after 9 a.m. Tuesday morning, as they greeted each other for the first time in front of a display of American and North Korean flags.
Both leaders maintained a stoic appearance during their initial exchange, but shared kind words after arriving at the location where their private meeting will take place.
"I feel great… We will have a terrific relationship moving forward," Trump said to the cameras, as Kim grinned beside him.
The reclusive North Korean leader said there were "a lot of obstacles" that both countries overcame to make their meeting possible.
Trump and Kim are scheduled to meet briefly with translators before opening up their bilateral discussion to aides from both delegations. Trump will be joined by his chief of staff John Kelly, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and national security adviser John Bolton, a figure whom most North Korean officials despise.
It is still unclear who will join Kim in the expanded portion of Tuesday's summit. The reclusive dictator traveled here with his sister Kim Yo Jong and top aide Kim Yong Chol, who met with Trump and Pompeo in Washington this month.
Pompeo told reporters on the eve of the summit that talks with the North Korean delegation had moved along "quite rapidly" on Monday, allowing Kim and Trump to depart Singapore earlier than planned. However, the top U.S. diplomat declined to provide details on what commitments, if any, were made during midlevel discussions ahead of Tuesday's meeting.
Trump defended his decision to sit down with Kim hours before they were slated to arrive at the Capella Hotel for their meeting, dismissing views that the summit itself is a major concession to North Korea.
"The fact that I am having a meeting is a major loss for the U.S., say the haters & losers," the president tweeted. "We have our hostages, testing, research and all missle [sic] launches have been stoped [sic], and these pundits, who have called me wrong from the beginning, have nothing else they can say!"
"We will be fine!" he added.

Trump will hold a press conference with the American press corps at an undisclosed location following the summit Tuesday afternoon. He is expected to depart Singapore for the U.S. shortly thereafter, hours after Kim returns to Pyongyang on an Air China flight at 4 p.m.
The president kept a light schedule following meetings with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Monday, presumably to continue preparing for the summit with his national security team.
Meanwhile, Kim spent the evening sightseeing around the bay and snapping selfies with local officials. The outing was captured by North Korean state media, which sent several photographers to accompany Kim on his historic trip this week.
