Trump, Kim Jong Un shake hands in historic first meeting

SINGAPORE — President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un exchanged a historic handshake just after 9 a.m. Tuesday morning, as they greeted each other for the first time in front of a display of American and North Korean flags.

Both leaders maintained a stoic appearance during their initial exchange, but shared kind words after arriving at the location where their private meeting will take place.

"I feel great… We will have a terrific relationship moving forward," Trump said to the cameras, as Kim grinned beside him.

The reclusive North Korean leader said there were "a lot of obstacles" that both countries overcame to make their meeting possible.

Trump and Kim are scheduled to meet briefly with translators before opening up their bilateral discussion to aides from both delegations. Trump will be joined by his chief of staff John Kelly, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and national security adviser John Bolton, a figure whom most North Korean officials despise.

It is still unclear who will join Kim in the expanded portion of Tuesday's summit. The reclusive dictator traveled here with his sister Kim Yo Jong and top aide Kim Yong Chol, who met with Trump and Pompeo in Washington this month.

Pompeo told reporters on the eve of the summit that talks with the North Korean delegation had moved along "quite rapidly" on Monday, allowing Kim and Trump to depart Singapore earlier than planned. However, the top U.S. diplomat declined to provide details on what commitments, if any, were made during midlevel discussions ahead of Tuesday's meeting.

Trump defended his decision to sit down with Kim hours before they were slated to arrive at the Capella Hotel for their meeting, dismissing views that the summit itself is a major concession to North Korea.

"The fact that I am having a meeting is a major loss for the U.S., say the haters & losers," the president tweeted. "We have our hostages, testing, research and all missle [sic] launches have been stoped [sic], and these pundits, who have called me wrong from the beginning, have nothing else they can say!"

"We will be fine!" he added.

Trump will hold a press conference with the American press corps at an undisclosed location following the summit Tuesday afternoon. He is expected to depart Singapore for the U.S. shortly thereafter, hours after Kim returns to Pyongyang on an Air China flight at 4 p.m.

The president kept a light schedule following meetings with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Monday, presumably to continue preparing for the summit with his national security team.

Meanwhile, Kim spent the evening sightseeing around the bay and snapping selfies with local officials. The outing was captured by North Korean state media, which sent several photographers to accompany Kim on his historic trip this week.

MSNBC debates the 'competitive touching' of Trump and Kim after handshake: WATCH

A trio of MSNBC hosts took a few moments to assess the historic handshake between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un when they met for the first time in Singapore.

Following the handshake, which took place Tuesday morning local time, Brian Williams, Rachel Maddow, and Chris Matthews surmised that "a lot of touching" had gone on.

"Did you like the competition with the arms and the body movements where the president would grab him and sort of lead him like he was escorting him and then he went back and grabbed his arm? Kim grabbed his arm," Matthews began.

"Very tactile," Williams said in reply.

"They were competing there. Man to man," Matthews added.

Maddow conceded: "Well, it's at least a lot of touching. I'm not sure."

"Yeah, it's a lot of touching. Competitive touching," Matthews cut in.

"But it's Trump — not to be too weird about this," Maddow said. "But it's the president touching Kim Jong Un a lot. It's not mutual."

"There's a Neil Diamond song about that," Williams noted, appearing to reference lyrics from "Sweet Caroline."

"See what I'm saying? There's a lot of gesturing and touching. Hand on the back. Hand on the arm. A lot of smiling by the president," Maddow said, before the conversation was veered in a different direction.

Republican lawmaker demands monthly reporting of Cabinet travel logs

Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., introduced legislation last week that would require all Cabinet officials to submit travel logs each month and ban them from flying first class.

The FLY Act comes on the heels of reports that Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt and other Cabinet-level officials took extravagant trips on the taxpayers' dime.

Under Norman's bill, the head of each federal agency would have to submit travel logs from the prior month to the Government Accountability Office. If an agency failed to submit any logs at the end of a quarter, the budget for the official's office would be cut by 1 percent.

Norman's bill is tougher than current law, which only requires a report if more than $5 million is spent on transportation.

"By requiring the heads of the agencies to report their travel, those in power will be held accountable for how they utilize taxpayer dollars, encouraging them to do so efficiently and not abuse their position by going on luxurious trips," Norman's office said in a statement. "While many in the Trump administration are being criticized for improper use of taxpayer dollars for travel, and some even resigning as a result, this is not a new issue."

That's how these elite are, take all our money for their expenses, which they justify, then steal the rest and claim they don't know where it went, because it was unaccounted for. Fun aren't they!
