US newspapers continuing to die at rate of 2 each week

 

Despite a growing recognition of the problem, the United States continues to see newspapers die at the rate of two per week, according to a report issued Wednesday on the state of local news.

 

Areas of the country that find themselves without a reliable source of local news tend to be poorer, older and less educated than those covered well, Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, Media and Integrated Marketing Communications said.

 

The country had 6,377 newspapers at the end of May, down from 8,891 in 2005, the report said. While the pandemic didn't quite cause the reckoning that some in the industry feared, 360 newspapers have shut down since the end of 2019, all but 24 of them weeklies serving small communities.

 

An estimated 75,000 journalists worked in newspapers in 2006, and now that's down to 31,000, Northwestern said. Annual newspaper revenue slipped from $50 billion to $21 billion in the same period.

New alliance formed in the Pacific orchestrated by the US

 

A new group allegedly aimed to improve economic and security concerns and interests with the Pacific island was formed between the US, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.

 

A joint statement on Friday announced the formation of the informal alliance, labeled Partners in the Blue Pacific (PBP), purportedly aimed to boost the efficacy of ongoing efforts “to support prosperity, resilience, and security” in the region.

 

According to the statement, PBP will operate “according to principles of Pacific regionalism, sovereignty, transparency, accountability, and most of all, [will be] led and guided by the Pacific islands.”

 

The fundamental goals of the group, as read in the statement include the expansion of prospects for cooperation between the Pacific island nations and the rest of the world.

 

The statement also read that the region is faced with the “most urgent challenges,” including the climate crisis, Covid-19, and “growing pressure on the rules-based free and open international order.”

 

Furthermore, White House Indo-Pacific coordinator Kurt Campbell said on Thursday that more high-level US officials will visit the Pacific islands in the future, “recognizing that nothing replaces, really, diplomatic boots on the ground.”

 

“Sovereignty is central in terms of how we see the Pacific overall. Any initiative that compromises or calls into question that sovereignty, I think we would have concerns with,” Campbell said, without mentioning China specifically.

Previously in the Pacific

 

The Campbell and PBP statements appear to be a reference to China’s regional approach to economic and political sustainability. As well as the security pact China signed with the Solomon Islands earlier in April.

 

Moreover in the Pacific, Australia was worried that the Solomon island security pact could be a step toward a Chinese military presence less than 2,000 km away.

 

On the other side, the US, UK, and Australia had formed their AUKUS alliance amid China concerns. The alliance was based on enhancing Australia's nuclear capabilities through advanced technology and nuclear submarines in order to increase the alliance's strength in the South Pacific as China grows more influential in its region.

 

Late in September of 2021, the US, UK, and Australia formed a military alliance to boost nuclear capabilities and "strengthen stability in the Indo-Pacific region" as the West grows warier of China, although they did not mention that in their announcement.

 

The military alliance is known as AUKUS and was announced during a trilateral virtual meeting between US President Joe Biden, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

 

Conversely, the Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands Manasseh Sogavare accused Australia of hypocrisy, saying that Canberra should have been more transparent with other Pacific nations when signing the AUKUS pact before accusing the new Honiara-Beijing security agreement of secrecy.

 

China and the Solomon Islands signed a framework agreement on security cooperation on April 19th. The construction of a Chinese military base in the Solomon Islands, according to Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, will be a "red line" for Canberra and Washington.

 

On his account, Manasseh Sogavare told parliament, as cited by Australian broadcaster ABC News, that "one would expect that as a member of the Pacific family, the Solomon Islands and members of the Pacific should have been consulted to ensure this AUKUS treaty is transparent since it will affect the Pacific family by allowing nuclear submarines in Pacific waters."

 

Sogavare stated that he learned about Australia's security agreement with the United Kingdom and the United States from the media.

 

Furthermore, a senior Solomon Islands official has defended his country's freedom to pick its friends, saying that the security arrangement agreed between the Solomon Islands and China was necessary to protect domestic security and aid in the battle against climate change.

Big update on Dr. Zelenko:

 

Zev's numbers have miraculously improved and now the doctors believe he is 50/50 to live or die. Just a couple of hours ago they had everyone preparing to say their final goodbyes to him but then as everyone around him and all of you were praying his numbers began to drastically change!

 

The doctors still don't know how this is even happening but I think they have started to become believers at this point.

 

Thank you all so much for the overwhelming prayers and support. I know it has been emotionally exhausting but please continue to pray and think about Zev, a true warrior for God. He still has more fight left in him!

A poll released on Thursday revealed a deteriorating situation on the social grounds of the US: More than 25% of US residents feel so alienated by their government, that they believe it may be “soon be necessary to take up arms” against it.

 

Around 1,000 registered US voters participated in the survey, which was published by the University of Chicago's Institute of Politics. The survey, furthermore, revealed that most US citizens agree that the US government is "corrupt and rigged against everyday people like me."

 

As the data suggests, extreme polarization in US politics, which has impacted social relationships, is higher than ever at the moment.

 

The statistics obtained come at the same time when hearings for the attack on the US Capitol are broadcasted on television - the attack is based on divisive premises that Biden did not win the 2020 election, and that Trump is the US' legitimate president. Rioters violently stormed the Capitol in an attempt to overturn the election results.

 

Although the rioters attacked both Democrats and Republicans, Trump loyalists have insisted that the committee investigating the January 6 events is illegitimate.

 

Furthermore, the survey indicates that there is an increasing distrust in the US government, and that distrust varies from party to party. For instance, 56% of participants said that in general, they trust elections to be conducted fairly and counted accurately, while Republicans, Democrats and independents carry different convictions regarding this point.

 

The vast divide can be directly linked to the January 6 riots: While Democrats have plenty of trust in the aforementioned item (80%), only 33% of Republicans exhibited trust. In the middle comes the independents, 51% of which showed trust in the US government.

 

According to the poll, 49% of Americans said they feel “more and more feel like a stranger in my own country” - a display of a sharp wedge in American unity, which is backed by how the participants identified themselves: 69% of the participants identified as "strong Republicans," 65% described themselves to be "very conservative" persons, and 38% "strong Democrats."

 

Of the 28% of voters who said that they may soon need to take up arms against their government, 37% said they had guns in their homes. A third of Republicans, which also includes 45% of "strong Republicans" held the belief of taking up arms. But, that is not all: 35% of independent voters and 20% of Democrats agreed, too.

 

Now, when it came to in-group-out-group tensions and aggression, 73% of Republicans agreed that “Democrats are generally bullies who want to impose their political beliefs on those who disagree,” and “an almost identical percentage of Democrats (74%) express that view of Republicans”.

 

"These poll results are perhaps the starkest evidence of the deep divisions in partisan attitudes rippling through the country,” said Neil Newhouse, a Republican pollster who conducted the survey in May.

UN chastised US Supreme Court decision on abortion rights

 

The United Nations described the US Supreme Court's decision to end abortion rights on Friday as a "huge blow to women's human rights and gender equality."

 

In a statement, UN human rights chief Michelle Bachelet said: "Access to safe, legal, and effective abortion is firmly rooted in international human rights law and is at the core of women and girls' autonomy and ability to make their own choices about their bodies and lives."

More than 50 countries with restrictive abortion laws have relaxed their laws in the last 25 years, according to the former Chilean president.

It is worth noting that the ruling does not make abortion illegal, but rather returns the United States to the pre-Roe v. Wade era when each state was free to allow them or not.

 

Several US states announced legislation to prohibit abortions in their states shortly after the court's announcement.

 

Human rights experts from the United Nations condemned the Supreme Court decision and urged US President Joe Biden to take all necessary steps to mitigate its repercussions.

 

In a joint statement, the experts called the ruling "a monumental setback for the rule of law and gender equality," calling it "shocking and dangerous."

 

They went on to say that the move would increase the number of women and girls seeking illegal and unsafe abortions, as well as exacerbate abortion stigma, creating a "nightmare scenario for those dealing with the uncertainty and trauma of an unplanned pregnancy."

Britons cannot expect pay rises to keep up with the soaring cost of living, the government has warned.
