Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has broken Freedom of Information laws which are the same laws PM Albanese accused Scott Morrison of breaking as recently as December 2021. Senator Rex Patrick has taken the initial steps to have it tested in court, if need be, in the near future which will be extremely embarrassing for PM Albanese and the government.

 

When Anthony Albanese was opposition leader last year, he attacked the federal government for not releasing documents from the National Cabinet because the government claimed they were protected from freedom of information laws as the โ€œNational Cabinetโ€ was a sub-committee of the Federal Cabinet which is protected from freedom of information laws.

 

But a judgment by Justice Richard White found that the โ€œNational Cabinetโ€, which was set up by Scott Morrison and is nothing more than the Prime Minister and State Premiers, did not have any relationship with the federal cabinet.

 

In August 2021 Senator Rex Patrick won a case in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal with Justice Richard White: โ€œfinding the national cabinet was not, as the prime minister had contended, a subcommittee of the federal cabinet.โ€

 

White concluded none of the documents sought by Patrick under FOI were an โ€œofficial record of a committee of cabinetโ€ and were, therefore, not covered by the cabinet exemption.

Houston Forces Private Businesses to Install 24/7 Citywide Digital Surveillance Cameras for Warrantless Access by Police

 

HOUSTON, Tex. โ€” The Rutherford Institute is calling on the City of Houston to address glaring constitutional concerns relating to a recently adopted ordinance that requires private businesses to install citywide digital surveillance cameras that can be accessed by police without a search warrant. The Exterior Security Cameras Ordinance, adopted by the Houston City Council on April 20, 2022, requires private businesses to purchase and install digital surveillance cameras that carry out round-the-clock, citywide surveillance on the populace while โ€œallowingโ€ police to access the footage at any time, for any reason, and without the need of a court-issued warrant. In a letter to the Houston City Council, Rutherford Institute attorneys warn that the Cityโ€™s thinly veiled attempt to evade oversight and accountability for Fourth Amendment violations by forcing a quasi-private/public arrangement on private businesses regarding the ownership and governance of digital surveillance cameras will not likely hold up to judicial scrutiny.

 

โ€œBy placing the burden of round-the-clock, citywide surveillance on private businesses, the City of Houston is clearly attempting an end-run around the Fourth Amendmentโ€™s warrant requirement as it relates to surveillance by government officials,โ€ said constitutional attorney John W. Whitehead, president of The Rutherford Institute and author of Battlefield America: The War on the American People. โ€œThis kind of warrantless, citywide surveillance program inevitably gives rise to a suspect society in which the burden of proof is reversed so that guilt is assumed and innocence must be proven.โ€

 

On April 20, 2022, the Houston City Council passed an ordinance ostensibly aimed at addressing โ€œan increase of violent crimes due to the pandemic, social anxiety and economic uncertainty, open carry law and a strained criminal justice system resulting in a criminal backlog of cases.โ€ The Exterior Security Cameras Ordinance requires certain private businesses (all bars, nightclubs, sexually-oriented businesses, convenience stores and game rooms inside city limits) to work in consultation with the Houston Police Department in order to install digital surveillance cameras that record the exterior property areas at all times. Business owners must bear the costs of the cameras, ensure the cameras are in proper working order, maintain recordings for at least 30 days, and provide video footage within 72 hours to police upon their request without a search warrant. The Ordinance is slated to take effect mid-July. Failure to comply with the Ordinance is a punishable offense for business owners with fines up to $500 per day. However, as The Rutherford Institute warns, by lodging the responsibility for the cameras with private businesses, the City is proceeding as if it is not bound by the warrant requirements of the Fourth Amendment, giving police carte blanche access to the surveillance footage from these digital cameras. Consequently, the Ordinance does not require a judge or magistrate to confirm that the police demand for video footage is supported by probable cause of criminal activity under oath, it does not limit the scope of the video footage which can be requested by the police in order to prevent obtaining extra and unnecessary video footage, and it does not require the crime to be violent or even serious in relation to the Ordinanceโ€™s stated goal of reducing violent crime. The Ordinance also fails to limit the use and further dissemination of the video footage by the police.

False QAnon Conspiracies in Politics: What to Watch Out for Ahead of the Midterms

 

The QAnon conspiracy theory, which first surfaced in October 2017, falsely purports that former President Donald Trump was fighting a hidden war against a cabal of Satanist pedophiles in Hollywood and the Democratic Party. Believers in the conspiracy theory's outlandish claims continue to be part of the political landscape, which could have serious ramifications as the midterm elections draw closer.

 

The nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute a nonprofit that researches the intersection of religion, culture and public policy released a study in February showing that nearly 16% of Americans believe the core QAnon conspiracy.

 

"QAnon has evolved from a movement centered around Trump leading a secret military intelligence operation to save the world, into a movement that not only doesn't need Trump but doesn't even need the iconography it developed over the past four years," said Mike Rothschild, conspiracy researcher and author of The Storm Is Upon Us, which provides a history of the QAnon conspiracy theory.

 

Conspiracy theories can be dangerous and even deadly as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, with vaccine misinformation playing a role in some people succumbing to the virus. Despite being repeatedly debunked, belief in the QAnon conspiracy continues to infect areas of politics beyond Trump. So far this year, aspects of the conspiracy have seeped into protests, a Supreme Court hearing and legislation.

 

"Its mythology of secret pedophile rings suppressed cures and technology, massive corruption and fraud propelling a [purportedly] decrepit Joe Biden into office, and COVID being a hoax, have infected every aspect of mainstream conservative politics and culture," Rothschild added.

 

It doesn't help that the mysterious figure Q broke their 18 months of silence on June 24. With the midterm elections coming up, the conspiracy is likely to continue popping up in campaigns and on social media feeds. Being able to recognize its influence may make it easier to spot, and avoid, in the future.

Eagle-eyed internet users are under the impression there was some unscheduled aircraft activity when the Queen's Jubilee Celebrations kicked off on Thursday.

 

Thousands of people gathered in London on Thursday (2 June) to mark the start of the Platinum Jubilee, which began with the Trooping the Colour parade and a display from Lincolnshireโ€™s famous Red Arrows aerobatics team.

 

Flying in formation, the nine planes of the aerobatics team blasted over Buckingham Palace for the official flypast, creating a line of red, white and blue smoke in their wake.

 

The impressive sight captivated members of the public both on the scene and those watching at home, but upon closer inspection of the event some viewers think they've spotted a tenth flying object in the sky.

 

Footage from the flypast shared by both Sky News and BigJetTV shows a mysterious, circular object cutting directly across the colourful path left by the planes, zooming quickly away in a direction perpendicular to the jets.

 

Commenting on the sight on Reddit, one person wrote: "Just watched the BigJetTV angle again, this goes WAY too fast to be a drone or balloon in the wind. I'm inclined to say this is a genuine [Unidentified Aerial Phenomena]."

 

Another viewer drew attention to the small size of the object, writing: "It almost makes me wonder if the occupants are either really tiny or non existent. This almost looks like it could be a drone or even an autonomous vehicle."

 

Other users have dismissed the sight as one of our own drones or as a bird, though one person refuted the latter suggestion by writing: "Hey dude I don't know if you've ever heard a fighter jet before but I guarantee you no bird is going to fly towards them let alone travel through their wake like that. Have you even met a bird before bro."

 

It should go without saying that authorities in the UK would have been all over security for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, so it's highly unlikely anything unauthorised would have been in the sky at that particular time.

 

However, I suppose there may be some technology out there that would allow a visiting species to go undetected by our own forces.

 

After all, with millions of people across the globe planning to take part in the celebrations marking 70 years of Queen Elizabeth II, who's to say the event didn't also get some attention from fans outside our own planet?

Ngunnawal traditional owners announce plans to lodge native title claim over ACT and surrounding NSW

 

A group of Ngunnawal traditional owners have used the 30th anniversary of the Mabo decision to announce their intention to lodge a native title claim over the entire ACT and parts of NSW.

 

Ngunawal Nation Traditional Owners Network Group spokeswoman Sonia Shea said Mabo Day was a "significant day" to announce the group's intention to "ensure our culture, rights and interests through the Native Title Act".

 

There have been previous native title applications lodged in the ACT, in 1996 and 1997, which were withdrawn in 2001 when the ACT government and Ngunnawal people reached an agreement over a special 99-year joint management lease for Namadgi National Park.

 

In a press conference this afternoon, the group said anthropological research was currently being undertaken into their genealogical links to the boundary over which they intended to lay claim.

 

Ms Shea said once that was completed, the group would finalise the process.

 

"We have over 300 registered families within our group and we've been working together on this for a number of years, working towards the rights and interests of our people, the Ngunnawal traditional owners of this country that we're on today," she said.

 

The group has also acquired legal representation.

 

Ngunnawal man Bradley Mapiva Brown said the ancestral group had occupied the area for about 60,000 years.

 

Mr Brown said some of the group's "key principles" included "the preservation of Ngunnawal sovereign and identity", and the protection of their boundaries.

 

He said they also aimed to protect Ngunnawal culture and heritage for future generations.

In total, between 2017 and 2020, U.S. commandos conducted at least 23 separate 127e programs across the world.

 

Separately, Joseph Votel, a retired four-star Army general who headed both Special Operations Command and Central Command, which oversees U.S. military efforts in the Middle East, confirmed the existence of previously unrevealed 127e โ€œcounterterrorismโ€ efforts in Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen.

 

Another former senior defense official, who requested anonymity to discuss a classified program, confirmed that an earlier version of the 127e program had also been in place in Iraq. A 127e program in Tunisia, code-named Obsidian Tower, which has never been acknowledged by the Pentagon or previously identified as a use of the 127e authority, resulted in combat by U.S. forces alongside local surrogates in 2017, according to another set of documents obtained by The Intercept. A third document, a secret memo that was redacted and declassified for release to The Intercept, sheds light on hallmarks of the program, including use of the authority to provide access to areas of the world otherwise inaccessible even to the most elite U.S. troops.

 

The documents and interviews provide the most detailed picture yet of an obscure funding authority that allows American commandos to conduct counterterrorism operations โ€œby, with, and throughโ€ foreign and irregular partner forces around the world. Basic information about these missions โ€” where they are conducted, their frequency and targets, and the foreign forces the U.S. relies on to carry them out โ€” are unknown even to most members of relevant congressional committees and key State Department personnel.

 

Through 127e, the U.S. arms, trains, and provides intelligence to foreign forces. But unlike traditional foreign assistance programs, which are primarily intended to build local capacity, 127e partners are then dispatched on U.S.-directed missions, targeting U.S. enemies to achieve U.S. aims. โ€œThe foreign participants in a 127-echo program are filling gaps that we donโ€™t have enough Americans to fill,โ€ a former senior defense official involved with the program told The Intercept. โ€œIf someone were to call a 127-echo program a proxy operation, it would be hard to argue with them.โ€

 

Retired generals with intimate knowledge of the 127e program โ€” known in military parlance as โ€œ127-echoโ€ โ€” say that it is extremely effective in targeting militant groups while reducing risk to U.S. forces. But experts told The Intercept that use of the little-known authority raises grave accountability and oversight concerns and potentially violates the U.S. Constitution.

 

One of the documents obtained by The Intercept puts the cost of 127e operations between 2017 and 2020 at $310 million, a fraction of U.S. military spending over that time period but a significant increase from the $25 million budget allocated to the program when it was first authorized, under a different name, in 2005.

Sri Lankaโ€™s prime minister is increasing efforts to revive the countryโ€™s โ€œcompletely collapsedโ€ economy amid a lack of foreign exchange reserves and severe shortages of essential items.

 

โ€œWe are now facing a far more serious situation beyond the mere shortages of fuel, gas, electricity, and food. Our economy has faced a complete collapse,โ€ Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told parliament on June 22.

 

โ€œIt is no easy task to revive a country with a completely collapsed economy, especially one that is dangerously low on foreign reserves,โ€ he said.

 

Sri Lanka will hold a credit aid conference with India, China, and Japan for loan packages. Wickremesinghe said the goal is to reach a โ€œgeneral consensusโ€ on the lending processes as each country has its own system for granting loans.

 

โ€œHowever, there have been some conflicts and disagreements between us in the recent past. We are working towards resolving these and fostering friendly relations once again,โ€ he added.

 

The government will also seek help from the United States, with representatives from the U.S. Treasury Department visiting Sri Lanka next week.

 

Australia said it would provide Sri Lanka with a $50 million development-assistance package following Wickremesingheโ€™s meeting with Australiaโ€™s Home Affairs Minister Clare Oโ€™Neil on Monday.

 

Wickremesinghe said that Sri Lanka has received a $4 billion credit line from India and requested additional loan assistance from the neighboring country.

 

A top-level Indian delegation is expected to meet with Sri Lankan leaders on June 23 to discuss extending an additional $500 million credit line to Sri Lanka for the purchase of oil, local media Daily Mirror reported.

 

โ€œBut even India will not be able to continuously support us in this manner. Even their assistance has its limits. On the other hand, we too must have a plan to repay these loans. These are not charitable donations,โ€ he added.

 

Wickremesinghe said that negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had made progress, with the government expecting to reach an official level agreement with the IMF by the end of July.
