Armed police have arrested a hostage taker and freed two hostages following a siege in Paris.

Officers were called to the scene in Paris' 10th arrondissement where a man claimed to be armed with a bomb and a handgun took several people hostage, including a pregnant woman.

France's interior minister confirmed that they had been freed on Tuesday evening.

According to police, one hostage was doused in petrol and hit in the face before managing to escape.

The other hostages are also thought to have been doused in petrol.
