how much visible light reflects from it (albedo)
how much and what frequencies of radar reflect from it.
speed of missile
exhaust spectra (light emitted by the burning rocket fuel) + possible additional elements added by ablation of the rocket nozzle
shape of exhaust plume
all of these factors can help determine what type of missile was fired.
