Body of Arkansas judge recovered from bottom of lake during family trip

August 8, 2022 10:55am Updated

An Arkansas judge drowned in a lake during a weekend getaway with family and friends, authorities said.

The body of Arkansas County Northern District Judge Jeremiah T. Bueker was recovered early Sunday from the bottom of Mud Lake in Jefferson County, sheriff officials said in a statement. He was 48.

The judge was spending time with several relatives and friends during a “recreational” outing over the weekend when he ventured off alone, authorities said.

“After time had passed and no one had seen or heard from Bueker, worry began to set in,” sheriff officials said Sunday.

Bueker was last seen near Mud Lake, which dumps into the Arkansas River just north of Reydell. The judge’s family then called 911 after they couldn’t find him on Saturday.

Jefferson County deputies launched extensive ground and water searches for Bueker that were later were suspended due to low visibility. Mud Lake was then scoured just after sunrise Sunday and a sonar detected the judge’s body at the bottom, authorities said.

“Deputies utilized subsurface body recovery drag/rescue hooks to recover Bueker’s body,” authorities said. “Upon recovery of the body, deputies and investigators with the assistance of family positively identified the body as that of Bueker.”

Bueker’s death is being probed as an accidental drowning, but his body is being sent to a state medical examiner for an autopsy, authorities said.

Sheriff Lafayette Woods said he hoped the recovery of Bueker’s body provides “some sense of closure” to his family and loved ones.

“The scour of emotions they must feel right now is devastating,” Woods said.

Stuttgart Mayor Norma Strabala, meanwhile, said she was “shocked and heartbroken” by Bueker’s sudden death.

“Jeremy was an important and special person in this community, serving as a good friend, fierce attorney, and as Arkansas County Northern District Court Judge for nearly a decade,” Strabala wrote on Facebook. “I am praying for Sunny, his family and this community as we mourn this tragic loss.”

Bueker, who was elected as a district judge in 2012, was an “avid outdoorsman” and a “very proud father,” a Stuttgart city official told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

He was last seen alive late Saturday, authorities told the outlet.

“His family had a weekend at a cabin on the family’s property,” said Maj. Gary McClain of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. “They were riding [utility vehicles] and returned back to the cabin. It appears he decided to go swimming after maybe being dusty and he went missing. No one was with him; he was alone.”

Relatives said Bueker loved to swim, so taking a spontaneous dip would not have been unusual for him, McClain added.

SpaceX Debris Found In Australian Sheep Paddock

August 7 2022

A charred chunk of space junk sticking out of a paddock owned by an Australian sheep farmer was confirmed Thursday by authorities to be part of one of Elon Musk’s SpaceX missions.

The ethereal-looking debris believed to have fallen to Earth on July 9 was found last week in Dalgety – a remote area near Australia’s Snowy Mountains, about a five-hour drive south-west of Sydney.

“It was kind of exciting and weird, all in the same way,” astrophysicist Brad Tucker, who visited the site after local farmers contacted him last month, told AFP.

He said that finding the large chunk nestled in an empty field reminded him of something from the sci-fi film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

“It’s amazing to see.”

The Australian Space Agency issued a statement confirming the debris came from one of Musk’s missions and urging locals to report any further finds to SpaceX.

“The agency has confirmed that the debris originated from a SpaceX mission and continues to work with our colleagues in the US, as well as other parts of the Commonwealth and local authorities as appropriate,” said a spokesman for the Australian Space Agency.

Tucker said the piece was part of a fuselage ejected from the earlier Crew-1 capsule when it reentered Earth’s atmosphere in 2021.

He said the trunk split upon re-entry, with reports of other space junk also found on nearby properties making further discoveries related to the SpaceX mission likely.

Most of the space debris splashes out to sea, but as the space industry expands worldwide, the amount that crashes on Earth would likely increase, he added.

“We need to be aware that there is a likely risk of it once striking a populated area and what that means.”

The Australian Space Agency said it is working to mitigate debris and has raised the issue internationally.

Quantum Navy Episode 1: The History of Quantum

Aug 8, 2022

The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), with the help of Defense Media Activity, is launching a three-part series highlighting the importance of quantum research for the 21st century U.S. Navy.

“Quantum Navy” will introduce viewers to the history of quantum, highlights NRL’s key role in the nation’s quantum initiative, and previews the future of quantum and what it means for the Navy.

Quantum information science offers vast technological improvements in computing, sensing, and communication, areas of high interest for the Navy. The series features NRL leadership describing researchers’ quest for dividends in these areas. Possibilities include solving computer problems in minutes that otherwise could take a lifetime, saving the lives of Sailors with more precise locations, or more secure, virtually unhackable communications for our naval forces.

In 2020, NRL was designated as the U.S. Navy’s Quantum Information Research Center. This designation allows NRL to engage with public and private sector organizations to enhance and accelerate research, development, and deployment of quantum information sciences and QIS-enabled technologies and systems.

Cruiser stolen with K-9 dogs inside, Toronto police say

Posted August 8, 2022 8:25 am

Updated August 8, 2022 1:04 pm

Officers say someone stole a Toronto police cruiser with two police dogs inside the vehicle early Monday.

A Toronto police spokesperson said officers received were called at 4:20 a.m. for a break and enter at a business in the Yonge Street and Lawrence Avenue area.

Police said the K-9 unit responded and during the response, someone jumped into a cruiser and took off.

It’s not confirmed if the person who allegedly stole the cruiser was the break-and-enter suspect.

Officers said the SUV cruiser then got in a single-vehicle crash in the Keele Street and Lawrence Avenue area.

The damaged vehicle was seen in the parking lot of a Metro grocery store near the intersection.

Acting Insp. Craig Young said the suspect got out of the cruiser after the crash and approached “a number of vehicles,” including a taxi, trying to get inside.

Young said the suspect was then taken into custody and transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“Certainly it was an audacious move on somebody to take a police car and engage this kind of activity. It’s extraordinary,” Young said.

Toronto paramedics told Global News they transported one patient to a trauma centre and another patient to a local hospital. It’s not clear who the second injured person was.

The police dogs were uninjured.
