Separation of Church & State really had to do with tithings to the Church of England (essentially a tax, as it supported the throne as The King of England was The Head of The Church of England). That tithing was a requirement for EVERYONE regardless of whether or not he or she was a parishioner.
So, if you wanted to support your own specific Christian denominated church (or Jewish synagogue circa 1650s), you had to pay for BOTH, your specific institution and THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND.
As this public school educated anon understands, the overwhelming majority of people were Christian and "separation of Church & State" was never meant to take God, Christ, Old & New Testaments out of public school….NEVER. It was meant to alleviate a favorite status for The Church of England and quash that revenue stream for the throne.
