Iran will quit nuclear deal if it does not benefit from it: President Rouhani

Press TV- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says the Islamic Republic will quit the multilateral nuclear agreement Tehran signed with major world powers in 2015 if it does not benefit from the deal after the US pullout.

Rouhani made the remarks during a Tuesday phone call with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, a month after the United States’ unilateral move to withdraw from the nuclear agreement, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

“If Iran cannot enjoy the agreement’s benefits, it will be practically impossible to stay in it,” Rouhani said.

The Iranian president commended the statements of the European countries, including France, to salvage the JCPOA. However, he emphasized that such declarations must be accompanied by practical and tangible measures and solutions to help Iran benefit from the agreement.

“We should not allow that this very great diplomatic achievement be destroyed by the others’ unilateral measures and acts of violation,” he said.

Rouhani expressed hope that efforts by the five remaining signatories to the JCPOA and Iran as well as the European Union would be successful and fruitful.

US President Donald Trump announced on May 8 that Washington was walking away from the nuclear agreement, which was reached between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China – plus Germany.

Trump also said he would reinstate US nuclear sanctions on Iran and impose “the highest level” of economic bans on the Islamic Republic.

No practical package delivered to Iran by Europeans yet: FM

RNA- Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Tuesday that Iran has not received any practical package from the Europeans.

‘In the latest round of expert talks with the Europeans on the JCPOA held in Tehran last week, all remaining parties to the deal announced their compliance with the it. However, we have not received the necessary practical package from them,’ Zarif told reporters upon his arrival in South Africa.

During the Tehran talks, the European sides announced their commitment to taking necessary measures to ensure that Iran would enjoy necessary economic guarantees, he said.

‘We have not received necessary practical package but EU member states and our Russian and Chinese colleagues are working on the package,’ Zarif said, adding that all are exploring ways of ensuring that they can provide Iran with the benefits envisioned in the deal.

All the measures being taken by Iranian officials are aimed at ensuring that the Iranian nation will receive all benefits that it should get from the nuclear deal.

On ties between Iran and South Africa, Zarif said Iran has always stood by the South African people.

Following the victory of the Islamic Revolution, Iran severed its diplomatic ties with the Apartheid regime but since the victory of the South African people, Tehran established the best relationship with Pretoria, the Iranian foreign minister said.

Zarif said he is scheduled to hold two rounds of talks with his South African counterpart and meet the president of the country tomorrow.

It effectively shut down JCPOA, The other countries that were involved will never agree to pay what Obama agreed to, so it makes it effectively worthless for them.

EU is taking steps to protect companies in Iran

The European Union is taking steps to protect EU companies investing in Iran from renewed U.S. sanctions on Tehran after U.S. President Donald Trump pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal.

According to an article published by New Europe weekly on Monday, the European Commission said it has adopted an update of the Blocking Statute and of the European Investment Bank (EIB)’s External Lending Mandate. The move follows up on the informal Leaders’ Meeting in Sofia, as well as the Commission’s announcements of May 18.

“These measures are meant to help protecting the interests of EU companies investing in Iran and to demonstrate the EU’s commitment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),” the Commission said in a press release.

“The European Union is fully committed to the continued, full, and effective implementation of the JCPOA, so long as Iran also respects its obligations. At the same time, the European Union is also committed to maintaining cooperation with the United States, who remains a key partner and ally,” the Commission said.

On May 8, U.S. President Donald Trump officially withdrew from the UN-endorsed nuclear agreement and plans to reimpose sanctions on Iran.

After the U.S. withdrawal, Iran wants assurances from the remaining parties that its interests are guaranteed otherwise it will resume nuclear activities with a higher speed.

I think they have been effectively warned at the G7, seems they are still pushing, I believe with the tables turned in NK, Iran now sees a way out, and feels as though they may have the upper hand. Either way, EU will be on the losing side of this.
