The FR AWACS is probably a normal flight. I was told there's a big NATO exercise over EU right now. AWACS do air traffic control over a theater of operations, among other things. Anyway it stopped indicating an emergency. Sometimes they will squawk emergency because it's a drill to test what happens when a plane has an emergency. I'm not concerned, just monitoring, because once in a while an emergency really is an emergency.

If you're inclined to dig, here are some questions:

Why was this exercise scheduled at this time when there are tensions between the US and NATO partners over (at a minimum) funding reponsibility?

How long ago was it scheduled and planned?

Why is NATO staging equipment in eastern EU, Poland? Is it to give credibility to the idea that there is a Russia threat (which I believe there isn't)?

Is it because Italian, Polish, Austrian nationalism?

There was a rumor of Sweden national guard being mobilized to enter the "no go zones" presumably to deal with the migrant issue there.

Why did Gen. Dunford (Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff) meet with his Russian military counterpart Gerasimov in Finland a few days ago?
