They tried mudslinging, lies, manipulations, stuffing ballot boxes, getting rid of votes that they didn't like, paying people to vote a certain way, bullying them into voting a certain way, bribing & blackmailing candidates, etc.

In the end, they just stole the votes from the other guy and gave it to themselves, by flipping the votes on the machines.
