Iran to Resume Enrichment at Fordow if JCPOA Falls Apart: Nuclear Official

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran will restart the process of enriching uranium at its Fordow nuclear site if the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is terminated, spokesperson for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) announced.

In an interview with Young Journalists Club, Behrouz Kamalvandi said the Fordow nuclear facility will be revived in case the Iran nuclear deal falls apart, meaning that the site will restart enriching uranium at the discretion of senior officials.

As regards the planned activities at Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility after any collapse of the JCPOA, the spokesman said the facility would begin manufacturing new advanced centrifuge machines with the maximum capacity.

Located in Iran’s central province of Qom, Fordow is buried deep underground to protect it against any military attacks.

In late 2011, the plant at Fordow began producing uranium enriched to 20 percent fissile purity. But after achievement of a deal with the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) in 2014, Iran has been producing lower-level uranium with an enrichment level of up to 5 percent in Fordow and Natanz.

Last week, AEOI Chief Ali Akbar Salehi said Tehran has already developed the necessary infrastructure at the Natanz nuclear facility for enrichment of uranium up to a level of one million SWU (Separative Work Unit).

It came after Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei ordered the AEOI to make preparations for the enrichment of uranium up to a level of 190,000 SWU without any delay in the framework provided by the JCPOA.

On May 8, the US president pulled his country out of the JCPOA, which was achieved in Vienna in 2015 after years of negotiations.

Following the US exit, Iran and the remaining parties launched talks to save the accord.

Meanwhile, Ayatollah Khamenei has underlined that any decision to keep the JCPOA running without the US should be conditional on “practical guarantees” from the Europeans.

Syria Seeking to Reopen Border Crossing with Iraq

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syria’s Foreign Ministry has reportedly informed Iraq of accelerated efforts to reopen al-Qaim border crossing, a post in eastern Syria that was long held by the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group.

In a meeting with Iraq’s Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari, Syrian Ambassador to Baghdad Sattam Jad’an al-Dandah has delivered a message from Foreign Minister of Syria Walid Muallem, announcing an acceleration of efforts to reopen the border crossing between Syria’s eastern city of Al-Bukamal and Iraq’s western town of Qaim, RT reported.

In the meeting, the Iraqi foreign minister has stressed the need for coordination of stances and cooperation between the two neighbors to settle the region’s problems through peaceful solutions and non-interference in the internal affairs of others, it added.

Al-Qaim border crossing, which connects Al-Bukamal in Syria's Deir ez-Zor Governorate to the city of Husaybah in Iraq’s Qaim district of Anbar Governorate, had fallen into the hands of Daesh terrorists who captured large areas of western Iraq in summer 2014.

In November 2017, Iraqi forces recaptured the city of Qaim from terrorists and gained control of the strategic border crossing.
