Deep State Infighting: DOJ Fingers FBI for Mar-a-Lago Raid Disaster

Senior U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) officials are blaming FBI Director Christopher Wray for the recent raid of former President Donald Trump’s home in an apparent attempt to take pressure off U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland.

After Trump confirmed the FBI raided Mar-a-Lago on Monday, many Republican politicians called on both Wray and Garland to explain the justification for the raid.

For example, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, said, “Merrick Garland, Chris Wray, come to the House Judiciary Committee this Friday and answer our questions about this action today, which has never happened in American history.”

Similarly, House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) called out the DOJ’s “intolerable state of weaponized politicization” and told Garland to “preserve your documents and clear your calendar” as he pledged an investigation into the FBI raid if the Republicans take control of the House after November’s midterms.

Even Rep. Peter Meijer (R-MI), who voted to impeach Trump after the January 6 Capitol Riots, said Wray and Garland “owe transparency on the justification for setting such a striking precedent.”

However, one senior DOJ official told Newsweek that the final decision to green-light the raid on Mar-a-Lago rested with FBI Director Wray.

“I know it’s hard for people to believe, but this was a matter for the U.S. Attorney and the FBI,” the source told Newsweek.

“It really is a case of the Bureau misreading the impact,” the source added.

Although the DOJ source claimed Wray gave the final go-ahead, Newsweek also reported that Attorney General Garland “was regularly briefed” on the investigation into Trump and “he knew about the grand jury and what material federal prosecutors were seeking.”

However, the source insisted “that Garland had no prior knowledge of the date and time of the specific raid, nor was he asked to approve it,” according to Newsweek.

The grand jury investigation over a potential violation of the Presidential Records Act that led to the raid on Mar-a-Lago reportedly began in April.

Another senior DOJ official told Newsweek that the Mar-a-Lago raid was a “spectacular backfire” because the FBI reportedly planned the raid while Trump was not in Florida in an effort to avoid any media circus.

As Newsweek detailed:

The officials, who have direct knowledge of the FBI’s deliberations and were granted anonymity in order to discuss sensitive matters, said the raid of Donald Trump’s Florida residence was deliberately timed to occur when the former president was away.

FBI decision-makers in Washington and Miami thought that denying the former president a photo opportunity or a platform from which to grandstand (or to attempt to thwart the raid) would lower the profile of the event, says one of the sources, a senior Justice Department official who is a 30-year veteran of the FBI.

The first DOJ source told Newsweek:

I know that there is much speculation out there that this is political persecution, but it is really the best and the worst of the bureaucracy in action. They wanted to punctuate the fact that this was a routine law enforcement action, stripped of any political overtones, and yet [they] got exactly the opposite.

“They were seeking to avoid any media circus. So even though everything made sense bureaucratically and the FBI feared that the documents might be destroyed, they also created the very firestorm they sought to avoid, in ignoring the fallout,” the second source said.

With Republicans rallying around the former president after news of the raid broke, it appears the FBI got the exact opposite of what they wanted.

“After working and cooperating with the relevant Government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate,” Trump said in a statement on Monday.

“It is prosecutorial misconduct, the weaponization of the Justice System, and an attack by Radical Left Democrats who desperately don’t want me to run for President in 2024, especially based on recent polls, and who will likewise do anything to stop Republicans and Conservatives in the upcoming Midterm Elections,” said Trump.

‘Deplorable’: FBI Director Christopher Wray Denounces Threats After Mar-a-Lago Raid

FBI Director Christopher Wray has denounced “deplorable and dangerous” threats against the agency following the raid on former President Donald Trump’s private residence in Florida.

In response to various threats circulating online, primarily on Gab, Wray told the Associated Press that “violence against law enforcement is not the answer.”

“I’m always concerned about threats to law enforcement,” Wray said. “Violence against law enforcement is not the answer, no matter who you’re upset with.”

Wray declined to comment on Monday’s raid at the former president’s private residence of Mar-a-Lago, where reportedly 30 agents raided his private office as well as former first lady Melania Trump’s wardrobe. Per the New York Post:

FBI agents scoured Melania Trump’s wardrobe and spent several hours combing through Donald Trump’s private office, breaking open his safe and rifling through drawers when they raided the former First Family’s Mar-a-Lago home in Florida Monday morning.

The Post has learned that the search warrant used by the FBI to enter the palatial Palm Beach property focused solely on presidential records and evidence of classified information being stored there.

A source close to the former president expressed concern that FBI agents or DOJ lawyers conducting the search could have “planted stuff” because they would not allow Trump’s attorneys inside the 128-room building to observe the operation, which lasted more than nine hours.

Nearly all Republicans and the former president’s supporters denounced the raid as a blatant power grab by the Biden Justice Department, likening it to third-world dictator tactics. Biden’s supporters and the left, in general, have all denounced those responses as dangerous rhetoric that could lead to violence. In an op-ed for Vanity Fair, Bess Levin argued that hot takes about how the Biden administration is potentially using law enforcement agencies to destroy a political opponent will lead to another January 6.

“It’s not that hard to imagine where this type of rhetoric could lead people, because something similar happened, oh, just 19 months ago, on January 6, 2021. But apparently that’s of little concern to Team Trump,” argued Levin.

Most Americans Say FBI Raid on Trump Motivates Them to Vote in the Midterms

Most Americans say the FBI’s raid on former President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home has motivated them to vote in the midterm election, a Convention of States Action/Trafalgar Group survey released Wednesday found.

“Does the FBI raid on President Trump increase your motivation to vote in the 2022 election?” the survey asked.

The overwhelming majority, 70.4 percent, said the FBI’s raid of Trump’s residence will increase their motivation to vote in the 2022 election, compared to 21.6 percent who said it will not. Another 8.1 percent remain unsure.

Over half of Democrats, 55.2 percent, said it will increase their motivation to vote, but an even greater number of Republicans, 83.3 percent, said it will motivate them to head the polls in November. Seven in ten independents, 71.7 percent, of said it will motivate them to vote in November as well.

Additionally, the survey found that. 47.9 percent, overall, believe “Trump’s political enemies” are behind the raid, compared to 39.7 percent who said the “impartial justice system” is behind it. Over-three quarters of Republicans, 76.7 percent, believe Trump’s political enemies are behind the raid.

The survey was taken August 8-10, 2022, among 1,095 likely general election voters and has a +/- 2.9 percent margin of error.

It comes days after the FBI’s raid of Mar-a-Lago, which former President Trump described as a “prosecutorial misconduct, the weaponization of the Justice System, and an attack by Radical Left Democrats who desperately don’t want me to run for President in 2024”:

Top Republicans have called for an investigation following the raid, which has ignited the conservative base. According to Eric Trump, his father is now seeing record fundraising numbers.

“DonaldJTrump.com is shattering all fundraising records and I’m told has raised more money in the past 24 hours than ever before in recent history!” he said. “The American people are pissed!”

CNN political commentator S.E. Cupp said Wednesday on “Newsroom” that she did not believe Americans were upset that the FBI raided former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.

Host Victor Blackwell said, “On this search specifically, we know that Trump’s base, the 30% or whatever of Republicans, they are energized by this. Do you think that this brings some of those Republicans who were starting to separate after the January 6 hearings thinking maybe someone else, this pulls them back?”

Cupp said, “I think we’re making too much of what this means for voters who were always going to vote for Trump, and so, of course, they’re energized. They were always energized. It’s not like they needed this pick me up. They were always with Trump, and this just solidifies what they always thought about the deep state and the conspiracy theories. If you were turned off by January 6, something like this will probably continue to turn you off. This is an awful week for the president and the country. I mean, he’s facing several lawsuits, his tax returns are going to be overturned, his home office was searched by the FBI. This isn’t good. So I think if you were already getting a whiff of wanting to move on thinking this guy’s probably corrupt and maybe even got some, you know, facing some criminal charges, I think this continues to push you in that direction.”

Network political commentator David Urban said, “I think Republicans writ large care a great deal about overreach from the Department of Justice and from the federal government writ large, right? I think that small government, you know, Republicans, small government Republicans find this repugnant and repulsive. In the history of the republic, nothing like this has occurred, and so I disagree with her. This has made Donald Trump a sympathetic character, which is very hard to do. I think it’s made him sympathetic amongst a great deal more Republicans. Your question at the beginning of that, has this helped the president? I think they have. I think people who may have been outside the tent may be more inclined to be damn the torpedos, full speed ahead now that this has occurred.”

Cupp said, “I think this a Trumpworld talking point that all across the country people are very concerned about the overreach and losing confidence in the FBI and the Justice Department now, that is true amongst MAGA world, but I think most people across the country think if you didn’t —”

Urban interjected, “No, no, no. S.E., come out of the bubble. Come out of the bubble, S.E.”

Cupp shot back, “Let me finish. If you didn’t leave the White House with classified documents, you don’t have to worry that the FBI is coming to raid your home office. I think most people think holding even the president accountable is good. That’s a good thing. That’s a sign of a healthy Justice Department and a healthy FBI. This Trump world talking point that the FBI is corrupt and the Justice Department is coming for average Americans is preposterous.”

Cupp concluded, “I don’t think people, wide swaths of Americans, believe that the FBI is corrupt and coming for them because they went for a president who set the precedent for doing things that no other president had ever done before. Some of which may, in fact, be criminal.”

President Joe Biden left the White House on Wednesday for a beach vacation in South Carolina, just two days after he left his beach home in Delaware.

The president did not speak to reporters as he departed via motorcade to Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday afternoon where he planned to fly to South Carolina.

President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden left their home on Rehoboth Beach on Monday morning to visit flood victims and devastation in eastern Kentucky before returning to the White House on Monday evening.

Biden signed a $280 billion semiconductor chip and science funding bill on Tuesday, and on Wednesday he signed a bill providing benefits for veterans suffering the effects of toxic burn pits while stationed overseas.

But the president did not hold a press conference before his vacation, bucking White House tradition.

Instead, the White House shared a list of policy successes on social media as Biden left for the week.

The Bidens plan to spend their vacation on Kiawah Island, a small barrier island located 25 miles southwest of Charleston, and remain there until next week.

Kiawah Island is considered a luxury escape for the wealthy and is the location of The Sanctuary, one of the most luxurious golf resorts on the East Coast.

The Biden family has regularly visited the island for their summer vacation, including four times when Joe Biden was vice president.
