The song is called “Cannibal,” and it would become the first single from what would become Mumford’s first solo record. It’s about something awful that happened to Mumford, a thing he’s still trying to figure out how to talk about with other people. But the song is so direct, so pointed, so explicitly about what it’s about—“I can still taste you and I hate it / That wasn’t a choice in the mind of a child and you knew it,” is how it begins—that there is no other place to start. “Like lots of people—and I’m learning more and more about this as we go and as I play it to people—I was sexually abused as a child,” Mumford told me during the first few minutes of the first real conversation we ever had. He was six years old at the time. “Not by family and not in the church, which might be some people’s assumption. But I hadn’t told anyone about it for 30 years.”

NYC carriage horse flogged by driver after collapsing on busy street

An exhausted carriage horse collapsed during the evening rush hour in Manhattan on Wednesday — lying on the asphalt while his driver repeatedly struck him and ordered him to “get up.”

The animal’s knees buckle in video footage as the driver jerks the reins and slaps the horse in an attempt to make it stand on 9th Avenue and West 45th Street in Hell’s Kitchen.

“Get up! Get up! Get up! C’mon, get up,” the frustrated driver commanded as traffic backed up on the busy avenue around 5 p.m.

Onlookers were disturbed by the flogging.

“What if I slapped you around like that, bro?” one concerned bystander asked.

“Stop slapping him,” another woman was heard pleading.

“I’m trying to get him up, alright,” the driver said, as he whipped the horse with the reins twice.

The dejected horse then laid down on its side and rested his head on the street as the driver removed his carriage with the help of a pedestrian.

“Mr. Van Hise’s conduct went beyond mere talk,” the judge said, citing his meeting with librarian Christopher Ashe in Trenton in 2012, where the two men drove around discussing women they could rape and kill.

Van Hise also used the trip to showed Ashe locations where they could “dump” a victim’s body after torturing and murdering her, the feds have said.

A few months after the Trenton trip, Van Hise emailed Richard Meltz, a former police chief at a Massachusetts Veterans Administration medical center, asking if Meltz would help him “do” his sister-in-law and her minor children, the feds have said.

“The kids are from 9 to 1,” Van Hise told Meltz, adding that he wanted to “rape and hang” the nine-year-old.

Ashe is serving a 15-year sentence while Meltz has been sentenced to 10 years in the clink.

Judge Gardephe said he was giving Van Hise a lower sentence than Ashe and Meltz because Van Hise was only 22 years old at the time of the sickening interactions, and because he agreed to cooperate with the FBI when they came knocking.

The only defendant in the case to escape prison is ex-NYPD cop Gilberto Valle — the infamous defendant who earned the “Cannibal Cop” nickname.
