Todays "fact checkers" like to call this quote a hoax or "Decontextualized" but it actually WAS a part of the Statue of Liberty's unveiling & it is NOT "decontextualized", it says EXACTLY what the author meant to convey.

"…there is room and brotherhood for all who will support our institutions and aid in our development; but that those who come to disturb our peace and dethrone our laws are aliens and enemies forever."

It wasn't until 1903, that a bronze plaque, mounted inside the pedestal's lower level, was inscribed with “The New Colossus,” a sonnet by American poet Emma Lazarus that welcomed immigrants to the United States with the declaration, “Give me your tired, your poor, / Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, / The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. / Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me. / I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”

Chauncey M. Depew (April 23, 1834 – April 5, 1928) was an American attorney, businessman, and Republican politician. He is best remembered for his two terms as United States Senator from New York and for his work for Cornelius Vanderbilt, as an attorney and as president of the New York Central Railroad System.
