NPCs are real and there's no point in blaming them for their condition. That's like blaming someone for being asleep. Maybe some will awaken slowly, other will be NPCs believing what they're told - which will depend on who they listen to.
We've always had NPCs.
Most people didn't even have surnames until a few centuries ago. We were all bought and sold with the land we were born on, and if you look it in the eye, that is still the case today.
We buy what cult advertising tells us, the only uncontrolled information we ever see comes from the natural world, which most NPCs never look at. Because Netflix, or YT or some other cult tarbaby has entangled us in the fake causes, fake effects, fake news and fake interpretations.
There is no reliable information of anonymous networks. Imagine being unable to tell a friend or family member from a stranger? That what the internet is. It was created to be the domain of shape shifters. Where the duplicitous and guileful always have the upper hand.
Only the cult, to whom no one is truly anonymous, hold the tech trump card, it makes them ruler of this house of thieves network and every thief , swindler botnet operator and pornographer who steals on the internet feeds the Eye.
