"Controversial author Salman Rushdie was attacked Friday as he was about to deliver a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in New York. An Associated Press reporter on the scene saw a man storm the stage and begin punching or stabbing Rushdie, knocking him to the floor, before being quickly detained. The government of Iran put out a fatwa on Rushdie in the 1980s over his book critical of Islam, The Satanic Verses. They have offered a $3 million reward for anyone who kills the author."
