Turkish airstrike kills three Syrian soldiers – media

Damascus reportedly targeted Turkish military sites in response

Turkish airstrikes killed three Syrian soldiers in the countryside near Aleppo on Tuesday, Syria’s SANA news network reported. Syrian forces responded by striking Turkish military sites, causing an unknown number of casualties, the outlet said.

Three soldiers were killed in the strikes and six others wounded, SANA reported, citing military sources. According to these sources, Syria’s armed forces "responded to the aggression, targeting the occupation sites and destroying them, causing human and material losses.”

Several sites belonging to Turkish-backed anti-government militants were also hit in retaliation, the report continued.

"With the intensification of the provocations practiced by the Turkish regime and the repeated attacks on different areas of Syrian territory, we affirm that any attack on any military point of our armed forces will be met by a direct and immediate response on all fronts,” the military source stated.

Ankara-sponsored militant groups occupy large swathes of territory in northern Syria, and Turkey regularly conducts offensives against Kurdish militias in this region. Turkey’s allies, the Syrian National Army, and its primary enemies, the Kurdish YPG, both oppose the government of Bashar Assad.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly promised to establish a 30-kilometer “safe zone” on the far side of its border with Syria. Earlier this month, he said that Turkish forces would soon launch an operation to “clear the last areas where the terrorist organization is nesting in Syria,” referring to land on the Syrian side of the border still held by the YPG.

Earlier on Tuesday, Turkey’s Defense Ministry said that it had “neutralized” 13 terrorists near the border in retaliation for a mortar attack on a border outpost, and that “operations continue in the region.” In a separate announcement on Twitter, the ministry said that its mechanized forces had killed five Kurdish fighters.

Disney Cruise Ship Company Drops COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement for Children

Disney Cruise Line said it is dropping its COVID-19 vaccine requirement for children aged 5 to 11 for trips departing Canada and the United States.

The company previously required all passengers aged 5 and older to be fully vaccinated before departing.

The firm said in an Aug. 15 update on its website that starting Sept. 2, “Disney Cruise Line will require Guests ages 12 and older to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at the time of sailing.”

Fully vaccinated individuals must show a negative COVID-19 test result taken one to two days before departure, the company said. Otherwise, they will have to undergo testing at the cruise terminal before departing.

People who are not fully vaccinated must provide proof of a negative test taken between one and three days before departure. They will have to return a second negative test taken at the terminal on the day of departure, according to the firm.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) ended some of its recommendations around COVID-19, noting that the vast majority of people have either had prior infection, been vaccinated, or both. The updated guidelines from the CDC, released last week, gave unvaccinated people much of the same treatment as vaccinated people.

Other Cruise Lines

Royal Caribbean confirmed that it will allow all passengers, regardless of vaccination status, on its ships in certain locations. A spokesperson for the company said that starting Sept. 5 it will drop its COVID-19 vaccine requirements “as long as testing requirements are met.”

“We are collaborating with local governments throughout the Caribbean to align on vaccination requirements for additional itineraries,” the spokesperson told USA Today. On its website, Royal Caribbean said that now, “COVID-19 vaccination is not required for sailings departing from home ports in California, Louisiana, or Texas.”

The company had required guests aged 12 and older to show proof of vaccination before they could get on ships in North America.

Similarly, Carnival Cruise Line is easing COVID-19 testing requirements for vaccinated passengers and allowing unvaccinated people to travel without an exemption.

“Carnival is pleased to announce new guidelines effective for cruises departing on Sept. 6, 2022, or later, which will make it easier for more guests to sail with simplified vaccination and testing guidelines, including no testing for vaccinated guests on sailings less than 16 nights and eliminating the exemption request process for unvaccinated guests, who will only need to show a negative test result at embarkation,” Carnival said in a statement.

After vaccines were rolled out en masse, cruise lines have issued mandates that everyone on board be vaccinated, although there have been numerous cases where ships reported that dozens of people on board had contracted COVID-19 this year.

Morrison was secretly appointed to five portfolios, PM says

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has accused his predecessor of "an extraordinary and unprecedented trashing of our democracy", following revelations he secretly swore himself into several ministerial roles.

Between March 2020 and May 2021, Morrison was appointed to five additional portfolios in secret, Albanese revealed today.

"This has been government by deception. Government in secret," Albanese said.

Morrison was operating as minister of health, finance, home affairs, treasury and industry, science, energy and resources.

Albanese said the implications of Morrison's multiple portfolios "are still being worked through".

"We know that there is a legal matter in the issue of resources," he said.

"I am seeking further advice as to the use of these extraordinary powers by Scott Morrison and other examples of it."

Albanese has sought advice from the solicitor-general, which should be ready by next Monday.

He said Morrison's colleagues "sat back and watched power be centralised within the Morrison government".

"They ticked off on the arrangements that had Scott Morrison as the only member of a Cabinet committee," he Albanese said.

"This is a sad indictment of not just Mr Morrison but all those cabinet colleagues of his."

He cited the text message sent to millions of Australians on election day of an illegal boat interception as an example of Morrison's alleged misuse of portfolios.

Albanese said the text message was an attempt to "pervert the result of the election on May 21".

"It's undermined our democracy," Albanese said.

"It's an attack on the Westminster system of parliamentary democracy as we know it."

The Prime Minister did not reveal whether the secretaries of the various ministries were aware Morrison had secretly sworn himself in as minister.

Karen Andrews was the official Home Affairs Minister, though Morrison had also been sworn into the role.

‘A monstrous lie’: Abbas ’50 holocausts’ claim met with outrage in Israel, Germany

Lapid slams PA leader for ‘moral disgrace’ in Berlin; German opposition head says chancellor should have booted Abbas and Yad Vashem chair urges ‘appropriate response’

Prime Minister Yair Lapid and others in Israel, Germany and elsewhere expressed shock and outrage Tuesday night, after Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas accused Israel of committing “holocausts” against Palestinians over the years during a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin.

Abbas’s accusation, made during a press conference alongside Scholz, also drew calls for a harsher response from Germany and its leader, who has been criticized for remaining silent rather than pushing back and only later expressing displeasure with the remark.

“Abbas accusing Israel of having committed ’50 Holocausts’ while standing on German soil is not only a moral disgrace, but a monstrous lie,” Lapid tweeted in English. “History will not forgive him.”

Dani Dayan, chairman of Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial and Museum, called Abbas words “despicable” and “appalling.”

“The German government must respond appropriately to this inexcusable behavior done inside the Federal Chancellery,” he posted on social media.

Abbas was responding to a reporter’s question about the upcoming anniversary of the Munich massacre half a century ago. Eleven Israeli athletes and a German police officer died after members of the Palestinian militant group Black September took hostages at the Olympic Village on September 5, 1972. At the time of the attack, the group was linked to Abbas’s Fatah party.

Asked whether as Palestinian leader he planned to apologize to Israel and Germany for the attack ahead of the 50th anniversary, Abbas responded instead by citing allegations of atrocities committed by Israel since 1947.

“If we want to go over the past, go ahead,” Abbas, who was speaking Arabic, told the reporters.

“I have 50 slaughters that Israel committed….50 massacres, 50 slaughters, 50 holocausts,” he said, pronouncing the final word in English.
