Alaska now has ranked choice /aka/ lottery

"Sen. Lisa Murkowski stands to benefit from Alaska's ranked-choice voting system in November, but first, she must get through a preliminary round of voting on Tuesday that will winnow the field of candidates."

"Voters cast a ballot for a single candidate in the primary. Under the new ranked-choice voting system, however, which applies only to the general election, voters rank all four candidates according to their preference. Candidates must gain more than 50% of the vote to win the general election, so if one does so on the first round, that person wins.

Since the vote will likely be too divided for a contender to win outright in the first round, the second round eliminates the lowest-scoring candidate, and everyone who voted for that candidate has their votes put toward their second choice. This continues until one candidate has crossed the 50% threshold.

If Murkowski makes it to the general election, she could survive the challenge from Tshibaka due to the way ranked-choice voting works.

Due to her name recognition and bipartisan appeal, Murkowski will likely be ranked somewhere on many voters' ballots. Though Tshibaka could lead in the beginning of the count by pulling the conservative vote, this lead could shrink as independent and Democratic candidates are eliminated and their votes are redistributed to Murkowski, according to an analysis from FiveThirtyEight.

Alaska will use ranked-choice voting on Tuesday to decide who will complete the remainder of Rep. Don Young's term after his death earlier this year. Three contenders are on the ballot after the first round of voting in June: former Alaska governor and 2008 vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, Nick Begich, of the Begich political dynasty, and former state legislator Mary Peltola, the only Democrat on the ballot. The fourth candidate, independent Al Gross, dropped out of the race.

A second ballot will be held at the same time to decide the four candidates vying for a full two-year term."

The sauce was sus, as it should be but the results show it was accurate, follow up sauce:

Republican Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski and Kelly Tshibaka a former state official backed by Donald Trump both advanced to a general election race under a new format that may have helped save the incumbent’s candidacy.

With 50% of the votes counted, Murkowski had a narrow lead of about 1,500 votes over Tshibaka, according to results published by AP. Democrat Patricia Chesbro and Republican Buzz Kelley were far behind but could also advance to the November election if they hold their positions in the 19-person primary.

Trump endorsed Tshibaka last year in a bid to oust Murkowski after she was one of seven GOP senators who voted to convict him in his impeachment trial following the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

Murkowski advanced to the November general election the same night that Republican Liz Cheney, a Wyoming Republican, lost her primary contest. Trump had aimed his vengeance on Cheney for voting to impeach him and chairing the House committee’s investigation into the insurrection.

In Alaska, Trump’s bid to oust Murkowski faced a steeper climb since the 65-year-old senator could count on some support from Democrats and Independents loathe to back Trump’s choice.

Longtime state pollster Ivan Moore of Alaska Survey Research said the open primary and ranked-choice voting method could save Murkowski in November because if she had to run in a purely Republican primary against Tshibaka, she would have almost certainly lost in “just a drubbing of the first order.”

John "T.J." Cox, A former Democratic congressman from Californiawhose companies scored federal loans amid the COVID-19 pandemic wasbusted Tuesday in a series of scams— including one that helped fund his winning run for office.

Cox allegedly provided the money up front or reimbursed the “straw” donors afterward.

Cox narrowly unseated GOP Rep. David Valadao in the 2018 House election, besting the incumbent by just 862 votes, or less than 1% of all ballots cast.

But Valadao regained the seat in 2020 after a race in which Cox came under fire for seeking special access to Yosemite National Park to celebrate the Fourth of July despite COVID-19 restrictions.

Terrance John “T.J.” Cox, 59, of Fresno was charged in a 28-count indictment that accuses him of siphoning off more than $1.7 million from an almond-processing company he co-owned and fraudulently obtaining a $1.5 development loan, according to the Sacramento US Attorney’s Office.

Cox is also accused of arranging for friends and family members to make more than $25,000 in crooked contributions to his 2018 campaign.

Cox’s campaign also reportedly admitted using Photoshop software to make it appear that Valadao retweeted a message from then-President Donald Trump that said, “California is going to hell. Vote Trump!”

The Post reported in July 2020 that Cox was one of several Democratic members of Congress with ties to companies that received millions of dollars in pandemic-induced Paycheck Protection Program loans.

The almond-processing company got as much as $350,000, as did an elder care provider in which Cox had a financial stake worth up to $1 million.

Those loans don’t figure in the indictment unsealed Tuesday.

Following his loss, Cox formed a political action committee for a potential rematch but instead endorsed Democrat Rudy Salas in November.

The Cook Political Report rates the race between Salas and Valadao — one of just 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump over the Jan. 6 attack on the US Capitol — as a toss-up.

Cox’s alleged scam with the almond-processing company involved diverting at least $750,000 in client payments, company loans and purported investments into a secret account, according to prosecutors.

The former lawmaker is also accused of obtaining a loan to redevelop Fresno’s Granite Park sports complex by falsifying a document that said it would be guaranteed by one of his companies, even though his partners never agreed to the deal.

The loan later went into default, causing the lender to lose nearly $1.3 million, according to prosecutors.

Cox was booked into the Fresno Jail following his arrest by the FBI, according to online records.

Information regarding his defense lawyer and initial court appearance wasn’t immediately available.

What ‘Paxlovid mouth’ is and how to get rid of it

August 16, 2022

Pfizer’s go-to antiviral drug treatment, Paxlovid, is leaving a bad taste in people’s mouths. Literally.

The Pfizer antiviral medication is used to treat people infected with COVID-19 — but as some patients have noted, the drug’s nasty taste remains in your mouth for as long as you take it.

Patients who have taken the drug, which lowers the risk of a severe reaction to the deadly disease, described the unpleasant aftertaste as “a mouthful of dirty pennies and rotten soymilk”in a new Wall Street Journal report.

Luckily, many of those affected have exchanged their coping methods online, such as consuming copious amounts of cinnamon, wolfing down pineapple or chugging smoothies, all to erase the taste that just won’t quit.

Under 6% of patients have reported a case of Paxlovid mouth, according to data. Pfizer has acknowledged the side effect, called dysgeusia.

The bad aftertaste is likely thanks to ritonavir, a part of the drug that is used to boost levels of antiviral medicines, according to WSJ.

One patient, 35-year-old Lisa Crawford, told the outlet she was surfing the web in a desperate bid to find a remedy to combat the taste.

“It was like the smell that hot garbage has, but in your mouth,”she told the outlet.

After stumbling upon a Reddit thread, she saw that pineapple was a potential way out.

Crawford said she munched on pineapple every 10 to 15 minutes each day, admitting that while she may “have no tooth enamel left,” it was actually “the only thing that saved my sanity.”

But another patient, Chantal McLaughlin, couldn’t hack it.

“I actually strained my neck because the gag response was so strong,”recalled McLaughlin, who ultimately stepped away from the treatment.

Doctors urge patients who struggle with Paxlovid mouth to stay the course, or risk a COVID-19 rebound.

CNBC boss Mark Hoffman to step down after 17-year reign

August 16, 2022

CNBC president and chairman Mark Hoffman will be stepping down from his post at the helm of the 24-hour business news channel effective Sept. 12, it was announced on Tuesday.

Hoffman will be replaced by KC Sullivan, who until now has been based in London, where he headed NBCUniversal’s global advertising and partnerships, according to CNBC.

Sullivan will return stateside to succeed Hoffman, who will stay on in a consulting role to assist in the transition, the news site reported.

“Mark has overseen the steady continued growth of CNBC as the world’s #1 business and money news brand,” said Cesar Conde, the chairman of NBCUniversal News Group, whose portfolio includes overseeing NBC News, MSNBC and CNBC.

“No business news organization comes close to the reach and influence of CNBC, a true testament to Mark’s leadership.”

Hoffman is credited with helming CNBC during a period of profitability for the cable channel, an impressive feat considering the dwindling linear television audiences.

While CNBC has turned a profit, it faces stiff competition from Fox Business Network, which recently overtook its Comcast-owned rival for most viewers in the coveted 25-54 demographic during morning and market hours, according to Nielsen ratings.
