At least 100 tons of dead fish have already been found in the Oder River. The fish carcass continues to drift toward the Baltic Sea. While tons of fish are being salvaged from the river every day, scientists and politicians are searching for the cause of the disaster. Polish environmentalists had initially claimed that a paper mill in the town of Oława had discharged toxic wastewater into the Oder. Now there is a new suspicion.

Suspicion: Silesian mining responsible for river epidemic

A Polish politician suspects the Silesian mining group KGHM. The company is alleged to have discharged large quantities of salt water into the Oder River near Glogau (Silesia). This is what MP Piotr Borys of the liberal opposition alliance KO told the Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza on Thursday. KGHM mines rock salt as well as silver and copper. The wastewater is then produced during processing.
