In New Zealand, Labour Party Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is taking maternity leave, while deputy prime minister and leader of the New Zealand First Party Winston Peters will be running the country.

 

This week Winston Peters unexpectedly vetoed the Labour Justice Minister Andrew Little's plan to repeal the three strikes law for violent offenders. The veto signaled significant tension between Labour and New Zealand first, just days before Peters was set to become acting Prime Minister.

 

Peters is also taking legal action again the head of the public service, the head of the ministry of social development and two opposition MPs for leaking details of his pension over-payments. He even took legal action against journalists in relation to the case.

 

Labour leader Jacinda Ardern is the former head of the International Youth Socialist Organisation and also worked as an intern for Tony Blair. She is widely regarded to support liberal and globalist ideologies, similar to the likes of Justin Trudeau and Helen Clark.

 

In 2017 Winston Peters formed a coalition government with the larger Labour Party, which was supported by the Greens to form a majority.

 

Today, New Zealand First MP Shane Jones came out and called for heads to roll at Fonterra, the giant dairy company which was created after government passed legislation granting it special status. His calls were backed up by Acting Prime minister Winston Peters.Jones has previously called for the head of Air New Zealand to resign.

 

Peters expresses similar views to nationalist like Donald Trump and Nigel Farage. He is a big supporter of Brexit and has even been photographed with Pepe imagery.Peters has courted controversy by defending Vladimir Putin and discussing free trade agreements with Russia and North Korea. Peter has vocally critisised the media for it's portrayal of his party.

 

He is also widely mistrusted and viewed as a career politician by his critics. He has a reputation for unpredictable decisions and siding with both left and right wing governments, often aliening voters on both sides of the political spectrum.

 

Peters is the Minister for Racing and is calling for greater prize pools for horse racing events. He is also the Foreign Minister. One of his MPs Ron Mark is the minister for defense..As Acting Prime Minister he will be responsible for Intelligence agencies, which are part of the 5-eyes network.

 

The New Zealand First party has been remarkably resilient, only missing out on parliamentary seats in one election in is 25 years of history.

 

Despite his reputation for controversy Peters is also viewed as a statesmen with influence Internationally. For example, he worked Condoleezza Rice to lead a peace talks delegation to North Korea. He also spoke at Gallipoli and in the House of Lords amount other places on the international stage. He is of Maori descent but repeatedly opposes laws which favour Maori above other citizens. He began his political career as an MP in the right wing National Party before starting his own party..

 

This is the first time that a New Zealand prime minister has taken maternity leave while in power. Peters will lead the government for 6 week and he has the potential to take the Government in a completely different direction to Ardern.
