Pelosi Was Against Student Loan Forgiveness Before She Was for It

BY LINCOLN BROWN AUG 24, 2022 4:41 PM ET

Nancy Pelosi was quick to praise Biden’s student loan move on Wednesday. In a statement picked up by Fox News, the Speaker of the House said, “By delivering historic targeted student debt relief to millions of borrowers, more working families will be able to meet their kitchen table needs as they continue to recover from the challenges of the pandemic…Importantly, this action will help those most in need, easing a financial burden disproportionately harming women and people of color.” But a little more than a year ago, Pelosi took issue with the idea, recalls National Review:

“People think that the President of the United States has the power for debt forgiveness. He does not. He can postpone. He can delay. But he does not have that power. That has to be an act of Congress…The President can’t do it. So that’s not even a discussion. Not everybody realizes that. But the President can only postpone, delay, but not forgive,” National Review notes that at the time, she suspected voters would be angered by the move and question its fairness. She added, “your child just decided they want to – at this time, not want to go to college, but you’re paying taxes to forgive somebody else’s obligations.” And back then, even the Department of Education was on board with that notion.

In a rare Twilight Zone moment, some conservative commentators are noting that she was right. But that was then, this is now. Even if Congress has the power and Biden does not, it is all academic.

I remember hearing about an old courtroom trick. A lawyer would make an outrageous allegation or make a query that would elicit a questionable response from a witness. The opposing attorney would object, and if the objection was sustained, the judge would order the jury to disregard the remark. But the jurors won’t be able to disregard the remark. It is left hanging in the air and is lodged in their minds.

So no matter if Congress is the only entity that can forgive student loans, and even in the highly unlikely event that Biden has to walk it back, it won’t matter. The message is out there, hanging in the air and lodging in many voters’ minds: Joe Biden wants to take away our student debt, and mean conservatives are mad about it.

This is meant to galvanize voters who have no idea how an economy works or what the words “national debt” mean. It is also meant to wipe away inflation, high gas prices, the debacle in Afghanistan, and everything else that makes up the track record of the last two dismal years.

Most of those voters won’t get it until it impacts them personally. And even then, their preferred media will tell them that somehow, it is all the conservatives’ fault.

And to be honest, there are probably plenty of conservative parents and former students who won’t think about the long-term effects. They will just be happy to be off the hook, in some cases for useless degrees from mercenary institutions.

This was a Hail Mary move. And hell, it just might work.

=•Emily Jashinsky: TikTok a Potential ‘Election Interference’ Weapon with Millions of Americans’ ‘Detailed Voter Profiles’==

Robert Kraychik24 Aug 2022

Emily Jashinsky, culture editor at The Federalist, explained on Wednesday’s edition of SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Daily with host Alex Marlow how TikTok may provide the Chinese Communist Party with the ability to manipulate American voters’ political perceptions.

Jashinsky noted how ByteDance, the China-based company which owns TikTok, can build “detailed voter profiles” for millions of American users on its digital platform.

“It’s built in a very kind of simple way,” she said of TikTok, “to suck as much data up about you as is possible and then feed you more and more content based on your swiping.”

TikTok captures users’ behaviors to construct personalized profiles and feed its broader algorithm, Jashinsky observed.

She remarked, “As you’re swiping through videos, they are building a profile on you.” She noted how TikTok logs the amount of time users spend viewing videos and the types of videos and profiles users observe. TikTok’s launching of an “Election Center,” she added, is a threat to national security.

Jashinsky warned of TikTok’s growing influence on American politics as a growing number of Americans describe the digital platform as a source of news and information. She said TikTok, and “social media” more broadly, is becoming the theatre in which “we litigate our politics and our personal lives.”

“We’re sleepwalking into this dystopia,” she warned. “ByteDance is legally required to give their data for national security purposes to the Chinese Communist Party if they ask. That’s the law. They say they won’t do that, but that’s a lot of trust to put in this company and the Chinese government not to use the data, but they can certainly try to manipulate voters with it.”

Manipulation of Americans’ political views “can be very subtle,” Jashinsky stated. She speculated that TikTok can be weaponized to make “Americans more and more divided,” such as “up-regulating trans content [and] BLM content.”

Marlow replied, “This is Chinese mind control because I think it is designed to — at a minimum — waste all of our time and maybe worse.” He added, “People are just getting stupid content that is so hard to shut off, because they’ve made the algorithm to rewire our brains, basically.”

DOJ Finalizes Rule Classifying Gun Parts as Firearms Requiring Background Checks

The Biden Department of Justice (DOJ) finalized a rule Wednesday that classifies parts in a gun parts kit as firearms that require a background check to purchase, like the one required for “traditional firearms.”

Breitbart News reported the then-proposed rule on April 11, 2022, noting that the new classification of gun parts was designed to be part of an effort to ban firearms that Democrats describe as “ghost guns.”

Democrats use the phrase “ghost guns” to describe firearms Americans can build themselves. The firearms are often built from an 80 percent receiver in the case of a rifle, or 80 percent frame, in the case of a pistol. Building such guns has long been an American hobby. The rule, as proposed by the DOJ, refers to the 80 percent parts kits as “buy, build, shoot” kits and they label the kits themselves as “firearms.”

On August 24, 2022, the DOJ announced its rule is now final and in effect.

The text of the Final Rule 2021R-05F makes clear that a “partially complete frame or receiver” is now covered under the definition of “frames” or “receivers.”

Other aspects of the rule, summarized by the ATF’s announcement of finalization, include the following:

To help keep guns from being sold to convicted felons and other prohibited purchasers, the rule makes clear that retailers must run background checks before selling kits that contain the parts necessary for someone to readily make a gun.

To help law enforcement trace guns used in a crime, the rule modernizes the definition of frame or receiver, clarifying which part of a weapon must be marked with a serial number – including in easy-to-build firearm kits.

To help reduce the number of unmarked and hard-to-trace “ghost guns,” the rule establishes requirements for federally licensed firearms dealers and gunsmiths to have a serial number added to 3D printed guns or other un-serialized firearms they take into inventory.

A fourth summary says the rule also mandates that Federal Firearms License holders (FFLs) must “retain records for the length of time they are licensed, thereby expanding records retention beyond the prior requirement of 20 years.” This means there will be a record of the gun sale — including serial number, purchaser’s name, address, etc. — on file at the gun store for the ATF to peruse when they visit the store to check on the FFLs record keeping.

Pollak: Heir to Levi Strauss Fortune Buys Congressional Seat in Manhattan

Joel B. Pollak24 Aug 2022

Remember this the next time President Joe Biden claims the Republicans are the party of the “rich”: Daniel S. Goldman, heir to the Levi Strauss clothing fortune, just bought a congressional seat in New York, spending $5 million of his personal stash.

Goldman, former henchman to Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) as impeachment counsel for the House Intelligence Committee, is also a certified Russia hoaxer who doggedly pushed the fraudulent “dossier” on Trump and hoped a “pee tape” would emerge.

In the impeachment investigation, he questioned witnesses behind closed doors and would not explain to the House Judiciary Committee why his committee had snooped on the phone records of Trump’s lawyers and Republican members of Congress.

A former federal prosecutor, Goldman has no natural constituency, but won the 10th congressional district Democratic Party primary — and hence the seat — by vastly outspending his more prominent rivals by dipping into his personal piggy bank.

The New York Times reported:

Mr. Goldman, an heir to the Levi Strauss fortune, has a net worth of up to $253 million and pumped nearly $5 million of his own money into the race.

He vanquished several candidates who had stronger political ties to the area and who were drawn into the 10th Congressional District after an unusually messy redistricting process earlier this year.

Mr. Goldman lacked the political connections of many of his opponents. He had never held elective office before, nor had he been particularly involved with local Democratic political clubs or neighborhood community boards. But his wealth enabled him to carpet bomb the district with television ads.

Goldman, who cast himself as a “progressive” within the Democratic Party, also highlighted his experience in the Trump impeachment — one in which he and other wealthy Democrat donors used their clout to cast themselves in starring roles. Not surprisingly, Goldman carried the Wall Street portion of the district on primary day, while losing in working-class Brooklyn.

Now, Bloomberg News notes, Goldman “will become one of the richest members of Congress if elected in November.”

It takes a lot of wealth to be that “progressive.” It takes a certain sense of personal security to violate other people’s constitutional rights. And for a rich, entitled kid in New York City, it takes about $5 million to buy a congressional seat.
