School bus driver among 6 arrested in Kalamazoo County child sex stings

A Portage Public Schools bus driver was one of six people arrested in a law enforcement operation targeting people seeking sex with children, according to Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller.

The sheriff held a news conference Friday, Aug. 26, to talk about the recent arrests by the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office Human Oppression Strike Team (KHOST).

He referred to the six people as predators and read their names and charges to a room of reporters Friday morning.

“There are six individuals we will be introducing to you, predators of children going online seeking sex,” Fuller said.

Investigators have found that there are thousands of apps and sites where children can be contacted and groomed, he said.

“While performing our work, an adult poses as a child,” Fuller said. Once they connect, the innocent conversations can turn into explicit proposition, and that’s what investigators see on a regular basis, Fuller said.

The school bus driver, a Kalamazoo resident, had not been arraigned as of Friday morning and is expected to be later in the day, Fuller said. MLive is not naming the bus driver at this time because he has not been arraigned.

N.J. man, 42, charged with offering child money to undress

A Monmouth County man was arrested Wednesday on charges he offered a child money in exchange for exposing intimate body parts, authorities said.

Marcus Brady, 42, of Keansburg, was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, according to Middletown police Chief Craig R. Weber.

“Middletown police were informed by the (child) and a parent that Brady had offered the juvenile money in exchange for the victim exposing intimate body parts,” Weber said in a statement on Friday.

“Police investigation showed that Brady made two separate offers to the victim, who declined to do so on both occasions,” the chief said.

Brady was held Friday at the Monmouth County Jail in Freehold pending a detention hearing.

Belgrade man charged with sexual abuse of children

A Belgrade man has been charged with sexual abuse of a child after agreeing to meet up with a Bozeman Police detective he met online who was posing as a child.

Joseph Smith, 54, appeared in Gallatin County Justice Court via video on Thursday. For the felony charge of sexual abuse of a child, Smith could see up to 100 years to life in prison.

Judge Rick West set Smith’s bail at $250,000. If he makes bail, the court ordered that Smith cannot knowingly have contact with minors.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, a Bozeman Police detective assigned to the special victims unit made a profile on a social media site posing as a boy. The court documents did not specify the boy’s age, but noted the detective was posing as a child under the age of 16. Sixteen is the age of consent under Montana law.

On Wednesday, a man named “Joe,” later identified as Smith, contacted the detective’s profile. The detective told Joe that he was a minor and they continued to chat on the social media platform.
