FBI agents Peter Strzok, Lisa Page exchanged texts about how they would 'stop' Trump from becoming president
Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, both FBI officials who worked on special counsel Robert Mueller's federal Russia investigation, exchanged text messages about how they would "stop" candidate Donald Trump from becoming president.
"[Trump’s] not ever going to become president, right? Right?!” Page wrote to Strzok, with whom she was having an extramarital affair, in August 2016, per Bloomberg News.
“No. No he won’t. We’ll stop it,” Strzok replied.
The newly revealed text messages are included in a highly anticipated report by the Justice Department's Office of Inspector General that details the watchdog's investigation into the DOJ and FBI's handling of the Hillary Clinton emails investigation during the 2016 presidential campaign. Inspector General Michael Horowitz's report, to be released to the public Thursday afternoon, is expected to conclude fired FBI Director James Comey "deviated" from official procedures in how he handled the bureau's investigation into Clinton's use of a private email server, hurting its reputation.
In a letter sent to Congress previewing the report, Horowitz said the Strzok-Page scandal hurt the FBI's standing because it gave the impression that federal agents were biased. However, Horowitz insisted the controversy did not affect Mueller's investigation into whether Trump's 2016 campaign and transition team's colluded with Russia.
Strzok and Page were outed last year for having an affair and sending messages that were critical of Trump to each other, despite their roles in the federal probe into Trump and Russia. Strzok was removed from the Mueller investigation in 2017 and Page left her post in May.
