Dementia-stricken woman dies after senior home serves her dishwashing liquid

August 30, 2022

A dementia-stricken woman died after the California senior citizens home she lived in errantly served her dishwashing liquid instead of juice, the home said.

The woman was one of three residents at Atria Park Senior Living Facility in San Mateo rushed to the hospital after they drank the caustic liquid, KRON-TV reported.

The employees involved have been suspended as the home investigates internally and cooperates with local authorities, the facility said.

“We have been working with local authorities, who have informed us that one resident passed away,” Atria said in a statement to the station. “Our sincerest condolences are with the family.”

One source told NBC Bay Area the inedible liquid might have been confused with grape juice.

“There may have been a mistake,’’ the source involved in the investigation told the local NBC affiliate. “A jug of grape juice is what somebody thought they had picked up and poured into glasses, but it was some sort of cleaning fluid.”

The victim’s daughter, Marcia Cutchin, told the local television station her mother Gertrude Elizabeth Murison Maxwell was the dead resident.

She said the senior home told her family the substance given to her mother was an “alkaline cleaning solution that eats protein.”

Maxwell suffers from dementia and was not able to feed herself, Cutchin said. When her mother arrived at the hospital, she had “severe blistering of her mouth and throat and esophagus,” Cutchin said.

“Many people, like my mother, you have to hold a cup to her mouth and tip it into her mouth,” Cutchin told KRON-TV.

The television station reported San Mateo Police were investigating and had no additional information.

Maxwell is survived by eight children and 20 grandchildren.

They had a jab workaround? Evil. "Confused" caustic liquid for grape juice, for a woman unable to feed herself? Anon knows the type, every care home has these elder abusers.

Missiles and bullets rip across Green Zone in Baghdad after protestors livid at Shiite cleric retiring forced way into the compound: 15 are shot dead… but US says embassy is NOT evacuating

John Kirby, National Council spokesperson, on Monday denied reports that the U.S. embassy in Baghdad is being evacuated

The Green Zone - the high-security sector of the Iraqi city in which the embassy sits - came under attack on Monday

It is not clear who is attacking, but supporters of influential cleric Moqtada Sadr are angry at his announcement that he is quitting politics

Iraq has been in chaos since October when legislative elections failed to choose a clear winner, and the country is now without leadership

August 30, 2022

Baghdad's high-security Green Zone came under attack on Monday after Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr said he was quitting politics, sparking chaos in which 15 of his supporters were killed - and forcing the United States to deny they had evacuated the embassy.

John Kirby, National Council spokesperson, on Monday said there was no truth to online rumors that the US embassy had been evacuated - but said the situation was changing rapidly.

'There's no evacuation going on at the moment and no indication that that's going to be carried out at this time,' Kirby said.

'Obviously we'll keep watching this unfold.'

Tensions have soared in Iraq amid a political crisis that has left the country without a new government, prime minister or president for months, and escalated sharply after Sadr's supporters stormed the government palace following their leader's announcement.

At least seven shells fell in the high-security Green Zone, which houses government buildings and diplomatic missions, AFP reported.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the shelling, which was followed by the sound of automatic weapons in the Green Zone.

The security source said Sadr's supporters opened fire at the Green Zone from the outside, adding that security forces inside 'were not responding'.

Shots were fired earlier in the fortified area, an AFP correspondent said, and medics said 15 Sadr supporters had been shot dead and 350 other protesters injured - some with bullet wounds and others suffering tear gas inhalation.

Witnesses said earlier that Sadr loyalists and supporters of a rival Shiite bloc, the pro-Iran Coordination Framework, had exchanged fire.

The Framework condemned an 'attack on state institutions', urging the Sadrists to engage in 'dialogue'.

The army had announced a nationwide curfew from 7:00 pm (1600 GMT).

Caretaker Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhemi said 'security or military forces, or armed men' were prohibited from opening fire on protesters.

Calling the earlier developments 'an extremely dangerous escalation', the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) urged 'all' sides to 'refrain from acts that could lead to an unstoppable chain of events'.

'The very survival of the state is at stake,' it warned.

The United States also urged calm amid the 'disturbing' reports of unrest in Baghdad while France called on 'the parties to exercise the utmost restraint' and 'immediately cease the deadly clashes'.

Protests spread to other parts of the country, with Sadr followers storming government buildings in the cities of Nasiriyah and Hillah south of Baghdad, an AFP correspondent and witnesses said.

Wisconsin morning news anchor dead at 27 from apparent suicide

August 30, 2022

A Wisconsin morning news anchor and former college basketball playerdied suddenly Saturday at age 27 in an apparent suicide.

News of WAOW anchor Neena Pacholke’s death left her family and colleagues stunned, and she was remembered for her contagious smile and happy-go-lucky demeanor.

“Neena Pacholke, our beloved morning anchor passed away suddenly Saturday,” 9 WAOW said in a statement. “The entire team here at News 9 are absolutely devastated by the loss as we know so many others are as well.”

Pacholke, who grew up in Tampa and played basketball for the University of South Florida, was engaged to be married at the time of her death, her older sister Kaitlynn Pacholke told Tampa Bay Times.

“She was just like a little ball of sunshine, and her smile was massive,” Kaitlynn Pacholke said Monday morning. “My sister was by far the happiest person I thought I knew.”

One of Pacholke’s last posts on Twitter was a retweet from author Jon Gordon about positivity and believing the best is yet to come.

“We are not positive because life is easy. We are positive because life can be hard,” Gordon wrote in the original tweet. “Give yourself (and others) grace. Speak life and encourage others. Look for the good today. Remember your WHY. Believe the best is yet to come.”

News 9 and Pacholke’s co-anchor also cited Pacholke’s smile and bubbly personality in tributes.

“She was a kind person with a big heart and a contagious smile and we will miss her greatly,” the station said.

Her co-anchor Brendan Mackey said Pacholke was “the brightest light in the room” with the “biggest smile and the funniest laugh.”

>Martin Skreli

‘Pharma Bro’ Martin Shkreli booted from his company by activist revolt

August 25, 2022

Convicted “Pharma Bro” Martin Shkreli has finally been ousted as boss of the pharmaceutical company he founded, The Post has learned.

Activist shareholders booted the group of directors still loyal to Shkreli during the annual general meeting of Turing’s parent company, Vyera, on Thursday.

Shkreli rose to notoriety after he hiked the price of life-saving AIDS treatment Daraprim to $750 a pill from $17.50 after obtaining the exclusive rights to it in 2015.

“The plan is to remove Martin from the company, right the price of Daraprim to pre-Shkreli levels, and do what’s right first with patients, physicians then shareholders,” Jason Aryeh, a longtime activist who previously sought to wrest control of the company, told The Post.

Shkreli was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2017 after being convicted of securities fraud while running two hedge funds.

The victory for the activists comes after a fraught and lengthy proxy battle. In June 2021, Aryeh and other activist investors failed — with the 39-year-old fraudster voting his shares from prison.

This time, however, Shkreli was banned by Vyera from voting his shares. Still, it wasn’t a slam dunk the activists would win. They feared the current directors — who owned an estimated 44% — could pull tricks like issuing themselves new shares.

The new group takes over a company in disarray, insiders told The Post.

As of June, Turing had “just $23 million in cash, down from $50 million the previous quarter” Aryeh said. “No idea what they’re doing — they burned through $27 million… where did it go?”

“The plan is to liquidate any remaining assets and return money to shareholders,” Aryeh added. “There’s going to be more skeletons they’re going to uncover — my guess is it’ll go defunct eventually.”

Derek Abbott, a bankruptcy lawyer who has been appointed as the legal “receiver” led the charge in this proxy battle. Abbott declined to comment.

In December, the Federal Trade Commission accused Shkreli in court of using anticompetitive tactics to drive up the price of Daraprim. The feds won, resulting in Shkreli being banned from the pharmaceutical industry in the US.

However, because Vyera is based in Switzerland — and subject to Swiss laws — the FTC ban was not enforceable.

Shkreli was sprung from prison in May and moved to a halfway house, from where he is expected to be released Sept. 14.

He also was banned from Twitter in 2017 for “targeted harassment” of a journalist.

After his early release from prison, Shkreli quipped on Facebook: “Getting out of real prison is easier than getting out of Twitter prison.”

Pharma bro gets out of custody in2 more weeks

He's larping & working up a new scam (imo) since the company he founded booted his ass. Watching what happens when he's able to vote his shares again, the only way they got him out was to deny him voting rights while incarcerated. The activist investors thought the board members would vote the way he wanted and not in the interest of the company.

This might be entertaining.
