The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in North Carolina has lost its status as a nonprofit.

According to documents, The IRS revoked the state NAACP of its nonprofit status in May 2022 after the organization did not file 990 tax forms showing exempt from income tax for three consecutive years. The announcement was made public in August.

The IRS website does state that just because an organization appears on its list, it does not mean it is currently revoked, as it may have been reinstated.

If NAACP NC does remain revoked, any donations leading up to elections are taxable and not deductible for donors.

The state NAACP has struggled for several months following accusations of misspending, and the death of its former president, Reverend Anthony Spearman, back in July.

>Dr Spearman was suicided, perhaps; house was robbed and one week later he found found dead in a pool of blood at home, rumors of suicide…

Spearman’s NAACP lawsuit will continue after death says atty.

(Excerpt)

By North Carolina law, the defamation portion of the late former N.C. NAACP Pres. Rev. Dr. T. Anthony Spearman’s lawsuit against National NAACP Pres./CEO Derrick Johnson and other NAACP members died with him last week when his lifeless body was discovered near a huge pool of blood in his Guilford County home, according to his attorney.

Generally, pending court action on a defamation claim does not survive the death of a plaintiff.

But Rev. Spearman’s claim of civil conspiracy against Johnson, National NAACP Board Chairman Leon W. Russell, N.C. NAACP Pres. Deborah Dicks Maxwell, and several other N.C. NAACP members, will most likely remain in force with the estate of Rev. Spearman serving as plaintiff, says Spearman’s Greensboro attorney, Mark T. Cummings.
