Kash Patel: Same Russiagate Crew Running FBI Investigation into Mar-a-Lago Documents

Kristina Wong30 Aug 2022part 1 of 3

Disgraced former FBI officials who failed to find Trump campaign collusion with Russia have begun smearing Kash Patel — the House Intelligence Committee investigator who exposed Russiagate as a hoax — suggesting that he will be ensnared in the FBI’s investigation of documents seized from Mar-a-Lago and threatening that he should be quiet and get a lawyer.

Andrew Weissman, the lead prosecutor for former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s failed effort to find and charge then-President Donald Trump with Russian collusion, recently suggested in an interview on MSNBC that Patel was “clearly in the crosshairs,” since the Department of Justice chose not to redact his name before releasing the FBI affidavit used to raid Mar-a-Lago. Without explaining why, Weissman asserted, “Kash Patel…needs to really be getting a lawyer.”

Peter Strzok, the former deputy assistant director of the FBI’s Counterintelligence Division who led the investigation into the Trump campaign in 2016, recently suggested Patel was in trouble. “Never great to see your unredacted name in a search warrant affidavit. To borrow from Eric Hirschmann, ‘I’m going to give you the best free legal advice you’re ever getting in your life. Get a great F’ing criminal defense lawyer — you’re going to need it,” he tweeted.

David Ignatius, Washington Post columnist — who first reported on the leaked classified contents of a call between then-former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn with a Russian diplomat — recently penned a hit piece on Patel, where he also suggested that Patel would be in trouble. “I fear that a sequel is coming, where Kash and King Donald’s other knights will joust with what they claim are government gangsters — and this won’t be a children’s book,” Ignatius warned ominously.

And recently on CNN, former federal prosecutor Jennifer Rodgers claimed Patel is “implicated” in some wrongdoing. In an apparent effort to get him to stop contradicting the establishment media narrative on the raid at Mar-a-Lago, she warned, “If I were him, I would stay quiet.”

Patel, in an interview with Breitbart News on Saturday, responded to Weissman and Strzok’s warnings and threats, saying:

Weissman and Strzok took their best shot at locking up Trump and failed — despite having almost unlimited resources at their command. Now they have been reduced to uttering asinine threats against me on cable TV and social media. They both provide an object example of people so carried away by their hatred of Trump that they set their reputations, their careers, and their souls on fire in the course of their obsessive vendetta against the former president. It’s predictable that they are now trying to take aim at me, the Russia Gate investigator that got Strzok fired and destroyed Weissman’s witch hunt before he ever launched it.

He added, “They want to try to get me in an obstruction of justice trap for somehow impeding a federal investigation involving Donald Trump’s mishandling of classified information, but I don’t know how that would be possible, since I’ve never talked to any single fed on it.”

The recently released FBI affidavit cited a May 5, 2022, Breitbart News article of an interview with Patel where he named a February 18, 2022, NBC News report that said the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) found items marked “classified” among 15 boxes of White House records retrieved from Mar-a-Lago in January 2022. Patel told Breitbart News that the report was “misleading” since Trump had already declassified sets of documents, but that the classification markings had not been updated.

Kash Patel: Same Russiagate Crew…

Part 2 of 3

Patel said on Saturday he had no idea what documents were at Mar-a-Lago when the FBI raided. However, he said what he does know is that declassified Russiagate documents were among those handed over to NARA back in January 2022, and that those have been given to the DOJ with no word on when they might be given back.

Patel said those Russiagate documents have never been publicly released. After NARA took possession of them in January, they were given to the DOJ to be viewed for any personal identifiable information (PII) and were supposed to be given back to NARA, but have not yet been returned.

“Remember, Devin [Nunes] and I have always said we got out about 60% of the Russiagate stuff we wanted to get out. The rest was in that binder,” he said.

Patel said even though Trump had designatedhim as his representative to NARA on June 19, 2022, in order to facilitate the release of already declassified Russiagate documents, Patel has not had the opportunity to review any documents NARA possesses from before or after the raid, since NARA has claimed they could not verify his security clearance.

“They’re playing bureaucratic gymnastics where their position is, ‘We can’t verify your security clearance,’ even though I know I have active security clearance that’s been verified by multiple government agencies,” he said. “After asking for an update on the binder of documents and other material, NARA has said, ‘Oh, we sent it to DOJ. We don’t know what’s here anymore.’ You know, it’s the total run around.”

Patel said it is no coincidence that the people who are threatening him and are in charge of the current FBI investigation into the documents are the same people embroiled in the Russiagate scandal, which means they have the most to lose if the documents are released.

“The same Russiagate people who started that investigation are now running DOJ and are the same FBI guys at counterintelligence running this investigation. They all know the information we discovered — Devin and I — during Russiagate. And they all know what didn’t get out as a result of that big binder of stuff not ever being released by Trump,” he said.

“Some of the same counterintelligence guys that John Durham is looking at who worked for Strzok and Priestap are working on the Hunter Biden laptop case, and this case and others — it’s the same crew,” he said.

“The same people that were supposed to have committed Russiagate are now back in charge, and they know that if they go in and raid Trump’s house and say we have an ongoing counterintelligence investigation, that the documents will never be released,” he said. “They’re afraid of more of their corruption being exposed, more of their unlawful conduct. What happens when the rest comes out?”

He said Weissman and Strzok in particular know what those Russiagate documents say. “Now coincidentally, these guys are the ones screaming that I need to get a lawyer,” he said.

Patel, a former federal prosecutor, was the lead investigator for the House Intelligence Committee’s probe into the origins of Russiagate and authored a memo that not only exposed DOJ and FBI malfeasance, but led to the firing of several involved, including Strzok.

Kash Patel: Same Russiagate Crew…

Part 3 of 3

The probe and subsequent memo exposed that the DOJ and FBI knew Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee paid for the creation of the so-called “Steele Dossier” — which was based on foreign disinformation and alleged that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia — but still used the “Dossier” to obtain a FISA warrant to spy on Trump’s campaign.

The DOJ inspector general later investigated Strzok, and found that he had texted FBI lawyer Lisa Page — with whom he was having an extramarital affair — messages that were “not only indicative of a biased state of mind but imply a willingness to take official action to impact a presidential candidate’s electoral prospects.” The DOJ inspector general added, “This is antithetical to the core values of the FBI and the Department of Justice,” the report said. The inspector general also criticized Strzok for not following up on new Hillary Clinton emails found on Anthony Weiner’s laptop in the run up to the 2016 election.

Patel said he believed the DOJ purposely left his name unredacted in the affidavit in retaliation.

“I’m the Russiagate investigator who exposed their corruption. We got Strzok fired, we got Comey fired, we got McCabe fired. We got 14 other people at the FBI and DOJ including Bruce Ohr fired or retired early, and Lisa Page. Now their bosses are back in charge and these people know the documents we found. Same with Weissman because when he was Mueller’s guy, they had access to all of those documents… . So it’s not a coincidence that these same people are now banding together to attack the one guy that exposed their corruption,” he said.

Patel said the decision to not redact his name comes immediately after the FBI has been investigating death threats against him for the past 10 months. “They have the emails. They’re nasty. They’re disgusting,” Patel said. However, he said on the same day the FBI decided to end its investigation on the death threats, the DOJ released the affidavit with his name on it.

“They decided to end the investigation regarding my death threats, and so it continues. Hatred and racist threats keep coming in,” he said.

“It’s intentional. They could have just redacted it… . In fact, DOJ/FBI guidelines demand that redaction, especially since everything below my name is redacted. It was done with one purpose: to threaten me and [Breitbart] indirectly for writing that article,” he said. “Now the deep state has come full circle, and America is seeing their corruption once more, without any care for my safety.”

Go get them Kash!

>>17465819.Body of letter

Dear Ms. Floris and Mr. Benavides:

On August 6, 2020, as we were finishing our September 23, 2020, report on Hunter Biden’s financial connections to foreign governments and questionable foreign nationals, you provided a briefing to us on behalf of the FBI and Intelligence Community.1 As we have publicly and privately stated to you and Director Wray since that briefing, the briefing was unnecessary and was only done because of pressure from our Democratic colleagues, including Democratic Leadership, to falsely attack our Biden investigation as advancing Russian disinformation.2

For example, on July 13, 2020, then-Minority Leader Schumer, Senator Warner, Speaker Pelosi and Representative Schiff sent a letter, with a classified attachment, to the FBI to express a purported belief that Congress was the subject of a foreign disinformation campaign.3 The classified attachment included unclassified elements that, among other things, attempted – and failed – to tie our investigation into the Biden family’s financial deals to foreign disinformation. Those elements were then leaked to the press.4 As you are undoubtedly aware, we’ve successfully refuted those false allegations and, most recently, we’ve made public a series of authentic bank records relating to the Biden family’s connections to the communist Chinese government, which Democrats had previously tried – and failed – to claim advanced Russian disinformation.5

In addition, on July 16, 2020, then-Ranking Member Peters and then-Ranking Member Wyden wrote to us requesting a briefing from the FBI’s Foreign Influence Task Force on matters purportedly relating to our investigation.6 On July 28, 2020, we responded to them and reminded them that in March 2020, the FBI and relevant members of the Intelligence Community had already briefed our committees and provided assurances that there was no reason that our committees should not continue their investigation.7 Nonetheless, the FBI succumbed to the Democratic pressure and provided the infamous August 6, 2020, briefing.

With respect to the substance of the briefing, it consisted primarily of information that we already knew and information unconnected to our Biden investigation. We made clear to you at the briefing that it was not relevant to the substance of our work. In response, you stated that the FBI is not attempting to “quash, curtail, or interfere” in the investigation in any way.8 We also made clear our concern that the briefing would be subject to a leak that would shed a false light on the focus of our investigation. Indeed, on May 1, 2021, the Washington Post did exactly that and so did the other inaccurate media articles during the course of our investigation which falsely labeled our investigation as advancing Russian disinformation.9 Moreover, whistleblowers have recently alleged that in August 2020, the same month you provided the briefing to us, FBI officials initiated a scheme to downplay derogatory information on Hunter Biden for the purpose of shutting down investigative activity relating to his potential criminal exposure by labeling it “disinformation.”10 Whistleblowers have also alleged that local FBI leadership instructed employees not to look at the Hunter Biden laptop immediately after the FBI had obtained it.11

At the briefing as well as after, we requested relevant records relating to what happened at the briefing, including the 302 or similar summary, the intelligence basis for the briefing and the personnel involved in making the decision to brief us. On August 12, 2020; May 3, 2021; July 25, 2022; and August 11, 2022, those requests were made.12 The FBI has consistently failed to respond in full to each request and failed to provide those critical records which casts further doubt on the true purpose for the briefing.

Simply put, the unnecessary FBI briefing provided the Democrats and liberal media the vehicle to spread their false narrative that our work advanced Russian disinformation. Although you stated that the FBI didn’t intend to “interfere” in our investigation, the practical effect of such an unnecessary briefing and the subsequent leaks relating to it created interference, which frustrated and obstructed congressional oversight efforts.

The FBI answers to Congress and the American people; therefore, we request that you appear before us for a transcribed interview on these and related matters no later than September 8, 2022. In addition, at the time of our initial request in August 2020, all records relating to the briefing should have been preserved.13 This letter reiterates that request.

House Oversight GOP Questions National Archives’ Statement on Its Involvement in FBI Raid on Trump

Sean Moran30 Aug 2022

House Oversight Committee Republicans called into question the accuracy of the National Archives statement on its involvement in the raid on former President Donald Trump’s home at Mar-A-Lago.

Oversight Committee Ranking Member James Comer (R-KY) and other Republicans wrote a letter to Debra Steidel Wall, the acting Archivist of the United States, regarding the National Archives and Records Administration’s (NARA) response to the Oversight Republicans that it was “unable to provide a briefing or any documents in response to your letter.”

The Oversight Republicans said that the “accuracy of this statement has been called into question in recent days.”

The Republicans challenged the National Archives’ narrative, stating:

On August 22, 2022, Just the News published a letter demonstrating robust negotiations between NARA and former President Trump’s attorney, Evan Corcoran. Also on August 22, 2022, the New York Times reported: “…the material in the boxes prompted archives officials to refer the matter to the Justice Department, which within months had convened a grand jury investigation.”

Comer and the other Republicans noted thatthe federal agency ignored the first two requests committee Republicans made to NARA, which include:

All documents and communications between any employee or agent of NARA and the FBI or Department of Justice, including the Offices of the United States Attorneys, regarding former President Trump;

All documents and communications between or among employees or agents of NARA regarding any documents in the possession of former President Trump.

“It is puzzling that you and your staff would blatantly deny the existence of such responsive documents or communications to Congress. It is implausible that there would be no internal communications by NARA employees regarding the subject matter of the letter to Mr. Corcoran, as your letter to us would indicate,” committee Republicans wrote to the National Archives.

Comer asked that NARA provide documents detailing communications between the NARA general counsel, Gary Stern, and Trump’s attorneys, which was reported by the New York Times on August 24.

“The Committee on Oversight and Reform is the principal oversight Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X,” the committee Republicans concluded in their letter to the National Archives.

The Republicans wrote in their previous letter to NARA that the “seeming weaponization of the federal government against President Biden’s political rivals cannot go unchecked.”

Fucking Hilarious

NewsGuard, NYT Target Truth Social Because It Allows Free Speech

Allum Bokhari30 Aug 2022

The New York Times is making celebrities of a few dozen alleged “QAnon” accounts on Truth Social in an effort to smear the platform and its creator, former President Donald Trump, because it allows more free speech than its highly censorious Silicon Valley competitors.

The essence of The New York Times’ complaint is that there is too much free speech on Truth Social, because some accounts that have been banned on Twitter are still allowed on Trump’s platform (Trump, of course, was also banned by Twitter, and every other major Big Tech platform, while he was still in office).

Via The New York Times:

NewsGuard, a media watchdog that analyzes the credibility of news outlets, found 88 users promoting the QAnon conspiracy theory on Truth Social, each to more than 10,000 followers. Of those accounts, 32 were previously banned by Twitter.

The report relies on data from NewsGuard, which Breitbart News has covered extensively in the past, and which has been condemned by top House Republican and House Armed Services Committee member Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN).

Despite presenting itself as a fake news watchdog, NewsGuard’s own founders have fueled false claims about major national news stories. At the height of the 2020 presidential election cycle, NewsGuard co-founder Steve Brill stated on national television that he thought there was a “high likelihood” that the Hunter Biden laptop story was a “hoax perpetrated by the Russians.”

In a comment to the Federalist, a representative of Truth Social said The New York Times condemned the newspaper for failing to correct its own shoddy reporting.

“Lacking any sense of humor, irony, or basic common sense, and having zealously promoted the Russia collusion hoax, the Russian bounties hoax, and countless other ludicrous fabrications, the New York Times is the last media company on Earth that should be accusing anyone else of spreading conspiracy theories — by contrast, Truth Social has reopened the Internet and given the American people their voice back. If the Timeshas any dignity left, it should return its Pulitzers and apologize for their continued slander and defamation of Truth Social.”

In a comment to Breitbart News, NewsGuard co-CEO Gordon Crovitz emphasized that the organization was not singling out Truth Social, and that it takes misreporting on the Hunter Biden story into account when assessing news sites.

“NewsGuard’s special reports have covered the spread of misinformation across all of the major social media platforms–not just Truth Social–for example, recent reports analyzed how TikTok’s algorithm feeds users Russian propaganda, how Chinese and foreign outlets have filled the void of RT and Sputnik on YouTube, and how Facebook and Twitter failed to enforce their own policies related to COVID-19 misinformation.”

“You asked about the Hunter Biden laptop issue. We have failed news sites on the responsible reporting criterion if they reported that the laptop did not belong to Hunter Biden laptop or declared that it was the product of a Russian disinformation effort.”

Nolte: Daily Beast Goes Full-McCarthy Against ‘My Son Hunter

John Nolte30 Aug 2022

(Bidan is paying them a lot imho)

The far-left Daily Beast, a documented cesspool of 14-year-old-girl hysteria, isn’t screwing around when it comes to the upcoming feature film My Son Hunter. There will be no Neo-McCarthyism here. No New-McCarthyism. No McCarthyism-lite.

Oh, no, these fascists are all about McCarthyism-McCarthyism.

The headline might as well read: THE RUSSIANS APPROVE OF YOUR MOVIE, YOU TRAITORS!

I bet that sound familiar, eh, fellas?

Here’s the breaking news, America…

Just like Married With Children, Everybody Loves Raymond, Full House, The Nanny, Prison Break, and Law & Order… Just likeSpartacus (1960), The Magnificent Seven(1960), and Mackenna’s Gold (1969), the Russians are interested in My Son Hunter.

So, just like blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, who wrote the above-mentioned Spartacus, we’re all pro-Russia traitors to the Red, White, and Blue, and democracy.

Why I bet, the Daily Beast has a list of over 200 members of Breitbart News who are “known Putin lovers.”

Really? The best the fascist-tards at the Daily Beast can do to blacklist My Son Hunter is to point out that Russia is interested in a feature film that criticizes the U.S. government.

Watch the trailer:

Why I’ll bet, Russian propagandists also loved All the President’s Men (1976), which, like My Son Hunter, criticized a U.S. president, the U.S. government, and U.S. foreign policy based on documented facts.

So Breitbart is in the good company of Alan Pakula, Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman, Carl Bernstein, and Bob Woodward. Can’t you just feel the shame?

In fact, I’m now thinking of all those Hollywood movies that criticized presidents and the government—you know, back when Hollywood liberals were still liberal and not pro-government fascists?

Putin must especially love those Hollywood movies that keep Western countries addicted to Russian energy imports: movies that trash the nuclear, oil, natural gas, and fracking industries. You know, pro-environment movies full of lies and hysteria that keep Putin powerful and wealthy.

What I mean is lunatic propaganda like this howler. Bet you even money, Putin read that beauty with his pants around his ankles. Fracking causes earthquakes. Say it again, baby… Oh, baby; oh, baby, OHHHH…

The fact that this is all the left has got — shameless, straight-up McCarthyism — to attack My Son Hunter, is a beautiful sign. Why? Because it means they got nothing else. They mad. That’s it… That’s all they got… They mad.

If you’re wondering why they mad, it starts with the fact that the laptop is as real as real gets, which means it proves that a number of (you’re going to want to click these links) degenerate, lying, fake news-spreading, scumbag news outlets have been caught red-handed deliberately deceiving their own readers.

Another reason they mad is that their once-powerful fascist bottleneck on information and distribution has crumbled. Not only can Breitbart News get the truth out, Breitbart News is proving perfectly capable of distributing a movie the Left’s McCarthyites want blacklisted.

Oh, and the movie looks professional, slick, well-acted, produced, and directed. The trailer has millions of views.

OHMYGAWD, the MAGAtards are getting good at this!

And My Son Hunter is taking off without the help of the fascist media, fascist Hollywood, and all the fascist systems the Woke Gestapo had put in place to control the culture and flow of information.

And now these spoiled, entitled babies are so angry that they’ve become Joe McCarthy screaming about Americans working for the Russians.

This is so much fun.

Hunter Biden is the subject of a brand new narrative film My Son Hunter, marking Breitbart’s expansion into film distribution. It’s the story the establishment media don’t want you to see.

Elon Musk Sends Second Deal Termination Letter to Twitter, Subpoenas Whistleblower

Lucas Nolan30 Aug 2022

(I get the feeling Elon is enjoying this, while others reveal the truth)

Elon Musk’s lawyers have sent a second deal termination to Twitter citing the damning allegations made by a whistleblower as reasoning for pulling out of the $44 billion acquisition deal Musk first moved to cancel in July.

Axios reports that Elon Musk’s lawyers issued a second deal termination letter to Twitter on Monday, citing recent allegations made by a Twitter whistleblower as the basis for pulling out of Musk’s $44 billion acquisition deal for the company which he moved to cancel in July.

Musk’s legal team also subpoenaed the Twitter whistleblower, Peiter Zatko who alleges that Twitter has been “lying” about the number of bots on its platform, particularly to Musk. Musk has long claimed that while Twitter alleges that bots account for approximately five percent of its platform, the number is closer to 20 percent.

Zatko alleges that Twitter arrives at its official percentage of bots by only sampling from a subset of accounts known as “monetizable daily active users,” or mDAUs. But this metric, which was created to give advertisers an idea of how many real humans are looking at their ads, already is designed to exclude bots.

Musk’s lawyers have filed a subpoena for Zatko requesting “documents and communications” regarding a number of the wrongdoings that Zatko is claiming including Twitter’s “tracking and measurements of user engagement.”

In the new termination letter, Musk’s lawyers argue that Zatko’s allegations “if true, demonstrate that Twitter has breached” a number of provisions outlined in its merger agreement with Musk, including its compliance with all laws and its claims that it never filed misleading information to securities regulators.

Twitter’s lawsuit against Elon Musk is scheduled to begin in October before the Delaware Court of Chancery.

Exclusive — Lee Smith: People I Trust Say FBI Raid Was Search for Russiagate Documents at Mar-a-Lago

Columnist Lee Smith, author of The Plot Against the President: The True Story of How Congressman Devin Nunes Uncovered the Biggest Political Scandal in U.S. History, said colleagues and peers of his — whose judgment he trusts — speculate that the FBI’s raid of former President Donald Trump’s private residence at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, FL, was a search for documents related to its “Russiagate” surveillance operation of the 45th president.

“I think the best way to understand this is in the context of a six-year-long operation targeting Donald Trump, Donald Trump’s aides, and Donald Trump’s supporters,” Smith said on SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Sunday with host Joel Pollak. “I have different colleagues and people whose insight and whose wisdom I trust very much, and they believe that what the FBI was looking for were documents related to … what the FBI called the Crossfire Hurricane investigation, but what most most of the rest of us know as the Russiagate operation meant to target candidate Trump, then President-elect Trump, and then President Donald J. Trump.”

Smith said the people whose speculation he was relaying “have much more insight” and “much more knowledge” about the FBI’s operations than he.

Smith noted that many of the FBI agents organizing the raid on Mar-a-Lago have been involved in the FBI’s ostensible investigation of Trump for years. He recalled a report from RealClearInvestigations titled, “FBI Unit Leading Mar-a-Lago Probe Earlier Ran Discredited Trump-Russia Investigation.”

He said political observers should view the FBI’s raid of Mar-a-Lago “as part of something that started in the spring and summer of 2016 … or perhaps earlier.” He added, “This was the effort to get Donald Trump.”

The FBI’s surveillance of Trump, Smith maintained, must have been known to former President Barack Obama given its launch during the Obama administration.

“We need to remember these [are] intelligence agencies that Hillary Clinton was using to spy on the Trump campaign and to smear the Trump campaign,” he remarked. “This was in the Obama administration. There is no way that any of this happened without the White House knowing about it.”

Smith said it was “good news” that whistleblowers within the FBI and U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) providedinformation to Sen. Chuck Grassley’s (R-IA) office about political and partisan internal efforts to suppress information about Hunter Biden.

The existence of whistleblowers within the FBI and DOJ, Smith surmised, could lead to some restraint among the bureaucracies’ worst “anti-Trump” operatives due to fear of exposure.

He remarked, “Thanks to the whistleblowers — and to thanks to Charles Grassley’s letters — now we have anti-Trump operatives at the DOJ and the FBI worried about who they can trust. Under our circumstances at present, that’s very important, and it’s very good news, because we want them looking at each other. We want them fearful of each other. We want them suspicious.”

“These are regime conditions,” he continued. “It’s not a constitutional order. In a constitutional order, corrupt federal law enforcement officers would be charges, tried, and if found guilty, convicted, but we don’t live under those circumstances, right now. It’s a different time for Americans. It’s a sad and tragic time, but we have to make do with what we have, because we’re Americans.”

Smith described the political and partisan weaponization of the DOJ and FBI as illustrative of the descent of America’s governance into a “regime” framework as opposed to a “constitutional order.” Whistleblowers within the government can create deterrence against further governmental abuses, he assessed.

“Whatever can be done to provoke more splits in law enforcement [and] more splits in our adversaries” is desirable, he maintained.

He concluded, “America has never been like this. We look at how actual corrupt third world regimes operate. That’s how we learn how to defend ourselves, how to advance our interests, and how to deter them while we’re working to restore our constitutional order.”

California Democrats Pass Law to Let State Set Fast Food Workers’ Wages

The bill, known as the Fast Act, would establish a panel with members appointed by the governor and legislative leaders composed of workers, union representatives, employers and business advocates. They would set hourly wages of up to $22 for fast food workers starting next year and can increase them annually by the same rate as the consumer-price index, up to a maximum of 3.5%.

A previous version of the bill passed by the state Assembly in January also allowed the council to oversee workplace conditions such as scheduling and made restaurant chains joint employers of their franchise’s employers, potentially opening them to liability for labor violations.

Representatives for companies including McDonald’s Corp., Yum Brands Inc. and Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. succeeded in having those provisions removed in the state Senate via amendments over the past week, though they still oppose the bill.

The Associated Press reported that advocates hoped it would inspire similar efforts nationwide:

“We made history today,” said Service Employees International Union President Mary Kay Henry, calling it “a watershed moment.”

“This legislation is a huge step forward for workers in California and all across the country,” she said as advocates offered it as a model for other states.

The debate has drawn attention nationwide, including on Capitol Hill where Democratic U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna has expressed hope it will trigger similar efforts elsewhere.

It is not yet clear what Gov. Newsom will do about the bill; he has recently taken a few stances in opposition to the far-left positions of his party, perhaps positioning himself for a future presidential run even as he taunts Republicans nationwide.
