Funny…I been postulating that's it's a missile defense system.
Goes something like this: incoming, tracked by radar, DEW satellite zaps anywhere nearby incoming and ionizes the nearby atmosphere to the point of plasma and said missile detonates/melts 8n the plasma.
Just a thought ..
