Judge unseals inventory from Mar-a-Lago raid, signals willingness on special master

September 01, 2022 03:18 PM

Judge Aileen Mercedes Cannon, who is overseeing proceedings over former President Donald Trump's request for a special master, reportedly unsealed an inventory of items the FBI seized from the Mar-a-Lago raid Thursday.

Cannon will not immediately rule on Trump's special master request Thursday after a hearing in the matter wrapped and declined to immediately lay out a timeline for when a decision in the matter will be made, according to multiple reports.

Attorney general wraps up Whitmer kidnapping plot hearing with undercover FBI agent

Prosecutors wrapped up their case Thursday against five men accused of materially aiding in the plot to kidnap Gov.Gretchen Whitmer after three and a half days of testimony.

Lawyers for the five defendants did not call any witnesses.

Grand Traverse District Court Judge Michael Stepka did not make a ruling Thursday to decide if there was enough evidence for the cases to proceed to trial.

Instead, Stepka asked prosecutors and each defense attorney to prepare a written argument for him after transcripts of the preliminary examination are completed. This will take at least 42 days, as each side has 21 days to turn in their brief.

Trump legal filing appears to contradict former president's defense for having documents

September 01, 2022 03:46 PM

Former President Donald Trump appeared to contradict one of his key defenses for having top secret documents at his Mar-a-Lago home in a new filing from his legal team.

The confusion was created in the Trump team's filing in response to the DOJโ€™s efforts to shoot down the former presidentโ€™s attempt to convince a federal judge to appoint a special master to review independently what the FBI had seized. In the filing, Trump's team agreed that any special master who is picked would need a top security clearance to review the records.

However, that appeared to go against Trump's defense that he declassified everything before leaving office. The confusion was pointed out by Frank Figliuzzi, a former top FBI official and a national security analyst for NBC News. The 25-year veteran of the bureau tweeted: โ€œTrumpโ€™s response filing - โ€˜โ€ฆWe agree with DOJ that a Special Master should have a Top Secret clearance.โ€™ Wait, I thought he declassified everything.โ€
