FNCā€™s Baier: Bidenā€™s GOP ā€˜Semi-Fascistā€™ Remark Falls into Hillaryā€™s ā€˜Basket of Deplorablesā€™

Fox News Anchor Bret Baier said Thursday on FNCā€™s ā€œAmerica Reportsā€ that President Joe Biden casting ā€œMAGA Republicansā€ as semi-fascist was the same as 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton saying half of Donald Trumpā€™s supporters belong in a ā€œbasket of deplorables.ā€

Baier said, ā€œThey think, I believe, that the more focus there is on former President Trump, the better they do in independent swing districts. But here is, you know, just looking back to October of 2020, the president delivers this speech called the soul of the nation speech, and in it, he says instead of treating each otherā€™s party as the opposition, we treat them as the enemy. This must end. Heā€™s saying unify, donā€™t vilify. Now the message is completely different. MAGA Republicans donā€™t just threaten our personal rights and security. They are a threat to our very democracy. Think about the dichotomy between the two statements in less than two years.ā€

Co-host John Roberts said, ā€œThatā€™s something that Kevin McCarthy is going to point out when he gives a rebuttal, saying, ā€˜Instead of trying to bring our country together to solve the challenges, President Biden has to divide, demean and disparage his fellow Americans simply because they disagree with his policies When the president speaks tonight at Independence Hall, the first lines out of his mouth should be to apologize for slandering tens of millions of Americans as fascists.ā€™ I donā€™t expect we will hear an apology from the president.ā€

Baier said, ā€œNo, definitely not. Itā€™s semi-fascist. Iā€™m not even sure how you can be semi-fascist. It does fall into the basket of deplorables. Republicans look at it as, you know, 70 million plus people voted for Donald Trump, and there are many of them who perhaps donā€™t agree with the man and everything he did or said but agreed with the Trump administration policies. Are they MAGA Republicans? Do they fall into the category that the president is now lambasting?ā€

Grassley warns DOJ against interfering with whistleblowers

'I remain concerned about the chilling effect it may have on whistleblowers who wish to approach Congress'

Iowa Republican Sen. Charles Grassley excoriated the Biden Department of Justice and Attorney General Merrick Garland over a memo sent to DOJ employees warning them to go through an internal office when dealing with Congress.

Garland issued the memo on Aug. 30 reminding personnel of longstanding DOJ policy that communications with Congress go through the Office of Legislative Affairs.

"[N]o department employee may communicate with Senators, Representatives, congressional committees, or congressional staff without advance coordination, consultation, and approval by OLA [Office of Legislative Affairs]," the memo read.

The Attorney General insisted the memo was not intended to discourage whistleblowers from reporting issues to Congress, but it came amid a string of whistleblower allegations from within the FBI both before and after the bureau raided former President Donald Trump's estate.

ā€œI write this letter to make clear to you that whistleblowers are the most patriotic people I know and they play an integral part in ensuring that inappropriate influences, political influence, and improper conduct within the Department and its components, such as the FBI, are exposed," Grassley wrote. "Under your leadership, the Department and FBI have failed to be responsive to congressional oversight requests. Accordingly, it is often only because of whistleblowers that Congress and the American people are apprised of the type of wrongdoing that your memo seeks to protect against."

ā€œEven with your whistleblower caveats, and due to the timing of your memo, I remain concerned about the chilling effect it may have on whistleblowers who wish to approach Congress with information relating to fraud, waste, abuse, and gross mismanagement," he concluded.
