Lebanon: Hochstein will arrive to Beirut next week

This evening, the Deputy Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Elias Bou Saab, informed Lebanese President Michel Aoun that the US envoy for Lebanon's maritime border demarcation, Amos Hochstein, will be arriving in Beirut next week.

The Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, at the end of August, said that “every cubic meter of gas and oil and the maritime borders with occupied Palestine are usurped by the Israeli occupation,” stressing that “Lebanon will defend its gas and oil with all its capabilities, and will not wait indefinitely."

Berri indicated that "the ball is now in the court of the American negotiator," and that Lebanon "will be present to defend our waters as we defended our land."

He also stressed the necessity of "working within the acceptable deadlines for the interest of negotiation because of the pressing time factor."

This is happening at a time when confrontation may be at the door between Lebanon and the Israeli occupation over the latter's threat to start extracting gas from the Karish gas field, and thus strip Lebanon of its own maritime territory and right.

Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, has vowed that the Lebanese Resistance will target the drilling platform in case a demarcation agreement with the Lebanese government is not reached in addition to enabling Lebanon to explore its own resources.

Macron, Scholz fear for security, stability of Europe

In order to improve relations with Kosovo, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has been asked by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron to make "tough decisions."

In a joint letter posted on Vucic's website on Sunday, the two leaders emphasized the need for the Serbian leader to demonstrate "maximum determination and readiness to make tough decisions in order to move the dialogue forward between Kosovo and Serbia."

Serbia has been under pressure from the EU to support sanctions against Russia and declare the independence of its breakaway region. For fear of encouraging separatism at home, a number of EU countries refuse to acknowledge Kosovo.

According to Scholz and Macron in order to ensure the future of the area across the EU, they claimed that the Balkan nation must resolve its protracted territorial issue with Kosovo and added that time proved vital for the security of Europe and the stability of the Western Balkans.

The European leaders said that they had given their foreign and security policy advisers the mandate to "explore the opportunities of moving the process forward quickly" by coordinating with the EU representative for the Belgrade-Pristina conversation.

The girls are from different nationalities. They get raped all day long by several men, including when they have their period. When they get pregnant, some keep their babies, others don't know what happens to them. Those who refuse to comply, are beaten savagely. Others are also heavily drugged. To make it short, it's pure hell.

Some of the girls were rescued a few years back and they testified. It's truly a horror show.

Russia to restrict oil supply to EU states implementing price cap

On Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that Russian oil supplies to the European Union will be restricted only as a response to the Western sanctions waged against the country.

Last Friday, finance miinisters of the G7 confirmed that they intend to impose price caps on Russian oil as an expansion of the sanctions against Russia.

As a reaction to such a decision, Russia asserted that it will stop exporting Russian oil to European states that are applying the decision.

"Of course, this can only be a retaliatory measure," Peskov told journalists.

The price ceiling, which Western leaders agreed on in principle in June, would limit the number of money refiners and merchants could pay for Russian oil. The measure is intended to reduce the Kremlin's earnings while keeping Russian oil on the market in order to avert a price upsurge.

Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House spokesperson, Russia is already trading oil at large discounts.

Prices all over Europe have been inflated by almost 400% due to the restricted gas flow from Russia, with expectations that they increase further after Moscow went back on its decision to continue pumping gas through Nord Stream 1 to Germany due to maintenance issues.

Thirteen EU nations have either ceased getting Russian gas entirely or are only receiving a portion of it due to the temporary blockage of the Nord Stream pipeline 1, the Russian TASS news agency reported last week.

Russia has underlined several times that it was not weaponizing energy and that the Western sanctions on it, as well as technical difficulties due to said sanctions, have been restricting the flow of gas and oil. Meanwhile, the sanctioning parties - essentially countries most damaged by the self-imposed sanctions - have been accusing Moscow of weaponizing its resources.

Israeli media: Recent operations in West Bank 'new kind of Intifada'

Israeli media confirmed that "what we have been witnessing in recent months in the West Bank is a 'new kind of Intifada' that is different from the Intifada of the 80s and the Second Intifada (in September 2000), and is characterized by a lot of violence against the army."

Military commentator on the Israeli Channel 13, Alon Ben-David, said, "I hear statements about what we have been seeing in recent months, saying it is a new kind of uprising that is different from what we witnessed in the 80s and in the year 2000, and what distinguishes it is a lot of violence directed against the Israeli army in every arrest operation."

Ben-David added, "This is not only in Jenin and Nablus; there are also blocks of stones and mass shooting at the Israeli soldiers by young men who do not belong to any organization, therefore the hesitation now. Ahead the eve of the October holidays, we might possibly intensify pressure and carry out more arrests, or on the contrary, take a step back and limit confrontation."

On his account, the military commentator on the Israeli Kan channel, Roi Sharon, said, "In the security establishment, they estimate that this escalation will further increase, with more shootings and more local armed groups, and what started in the Jenin area has spread towards Nablus and has expanded today to the Jordan Valley."

New status quo emerging in Palestinian areas

Arab affairs commentator on Israeli Channel 13, Hezi Simantov, said, "What is happening in the northern West Bank in the governorates of Nablus and Jenin is a pattern that has become a reality, and this pattern is represented by armed groups carrying out shooting attacks against Israelis, and the group consists of two or three, who take the weapon and plan to carry out an operation."

He continued, "These people are not sent by a specific organization. Perhaps they sympathize with Hamas, the Islamic Jihad, Fatah, etc. Every entry of the Israeli army into the Palestinian areas to carry out an arrest operation is accompanied by live fire. This is a disturbing, alarming new status quo that threatens to develop more and more in the Palestinian territories."

Jordan Valley operation was preceded by intelligence preparations

Political commentator on Channel 12, Amir Bar-Shalom, pointed out, "It seems that there were preparations for the operation, and not only by means, but they tried to burn the bus in parallel with the shooting; there were intelligence preparations, too. They knew that these buses were moving on Sunday on these roads, and apparently, there was tracking."

He continued, "They knew exactly which bus they wanted to attack."

This evening, the military commentator on the Israeli Channel 12, Nir Dvory, said quoting a "senior security source" in the occupation forces, that "the situation in the (Palestinian) territories is considered complicated, even very complicated," stressing the existence of "warnings from operations."

This came after a number of Israeli occupation soldiers were wounded in a shooting targeting their bus in the Jordan Valley.

Sharp and obvious increase in Palestinian operations

In turn, a Palestinian affairs correspondent for the Israeli Kan channel commented saying, "the data recently presented in the security and military establishment, which we are publishing today for the first time, confirm that in 2021, 91 Palestinian operations were recorded, 75 of which were against security forces and military targets," adding that in the year 2022 that has not ended yet, more than 150 operations were recorded, more than 130 of which were against the security forces."

She continued, "These operations do not include stone [throwing] operations and Molotov cocktails," explaining that "according to these data, there is a sharp and obvious increase in the number of attacks directed against security forces in particular."

UK Police preparing for a wave of violent crimes this winter

The Sunday Times reported that the UK police fears a spike in certain types of crime and the risk of civil unrest this winter, quoting a leaked national strategy paper.

The police chiefs' document cautions that "economic turmoil and financial instability" may lead to an increase in crimes, most notably shoplifting, burglary, vehicle theft, online fraud, and blackmail.

The document also stressed that more children are likely to join drug gangs, and more women may be sexually exploited.

"Prolonged and painful economic pressure could lead to greater civil unrest, similar to the 2011 London riots,” the document added.

Such factors could also contribute to police corruption, according to the document: "Greater financial vulnerability may expose some staff to a higher risk of corruption, particularly those who fall into significant debt or financial difficulties," it added.

The alarming forecast was released a day before the UK's next PM is named. It is worth noting that Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and former chancellor Rishi Sunak have both vowed to address rising energy costs.

The UK is among the top countries facing the brunt of inflation, gas prices, and now energy cuts, with approximately 60% of its companies threatening to halt operations and shut down.

US Vice President, Polish PM talk Ukraine, NATO Eastern flank: WH

US Vice President Kamala Harris discussed the situation in Ukraine with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki during a phone call, as per the White House.

In a statement, the White House said, “Vice President Kamala Harris today spoke with Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki of Poland. The Vice President recognized Poland’s generosity and leadership in hosting millions of Ukrainian refugees and providing critical humanitarian assistance, while also providing vital security assistance to help the Ukrainian people."

Harris and Morawiecki also discussed bilateral cooperation, most notably in the fields of civil nuclear power and security. Interestingly, the Polish PM wields the most important political role in his country, and thus it is quite unconventional that affairs of such high relevance get discussed with the US VP instead of the US President, who's the logical counterpart of the PM in this case.

"The Vice President reaffirmed the enduring strength of the US-Polish relationship and efforts to bolster our collective security, including the permanent stationing of the US Army V Corps Headquarters Forward Command Post in Poznan, which [US] President [Joe] Biden recently announced as the first permanently-stationed US force presence on NATO’s Eastern Flank," the White House added.

It is worth noting that US President Joe Biden announced at the NATO summit in Madrid last June that the US will increase its military presence in Europe and establish a permanent headquarters for its Army V Corps in Poland.

Further contributing to the deterioration of the situation in Ukraine, the US government is reportedly preparing a new package of weapons supplies for Ukraine worth $1 billion.

The package, one of the largest so far, will include munitions for long-range weapons and armored medical transport vehicles, according to Reuters.

The package is projected to be announced as early as Monday and would add to the approximately $8.8 billion packages of weapon supplies provided by the US to Ukraine since February 24.

The next weapons package had yet to be signed by Biden, according to the report.

All these announcements came amidst a global call to put an end to the war in Ukraine and look towards a peaceful solution to be established through diplomacy and negotiations which the West has been hindering by actively pumping Ukraine with weapons.

Truss insider 'confident' energy bills will be frozen in UK

According to The Telegraph reports, citing sources, UK Foreign Secretary and PM runner-up Liz Truss could freeze energy bills for UK households this winter.

Truss has maintained her lead over former finance minister and fellow candidate Rishi Sunak in the polls of Conservative Party, or Tory, members. The voting closed last Friday and the final winner will be announced at 12:30 pm BST (11:30 GMT) on Monday.

The Telegraph also reported Sunday that the Scottish Power energy company proposed a £100 billion ($114.8 billion) project to freeze energy bills for a two-year span in the UK, which other British energy companies advocated for.

One energy company told the newspaper that the plan has been "extremely actively explored" by the Truss campaign, and another industry source disclosed that the proposal was being criticized by the Truss campaign, whose team insider told the newspaper: "I’m confident there will be a mechanism introduced that freezes bills".

Bloomberg reported on Saturday that approximately 60% of factories in the UK are at extreme risk of shutting down as energy costs across the country continue to skyrocket, with electricity bills surging by more than 100% over the past year. Britain may have to spend $27 billion more in subsidies if they are going to cover the surging energy bills in the upcoming heating season, according to a report by The Guardian last Wednesday, citing a research paper published by the Institute for Government (IfG) - meaning every British household would pay £900 ($1,057.45) more this winter compared to May's estimate.

Another insider told the newspaper that the idea was heavily discussed, especially concerning the details of the potential plan, such as who would benefit, its duration, and at what price level which remains a point in question.

Truss, however, said in an article for The Telegraph that she intended to address the energy bill matter in the first week of starting off her new administration if elected. "Sticking plasters and kicking the can down the road will not do. I am ready to take the tough decisions to rebuild our economy," Truss wrote.

A source close to Truss told the newspaper on Saturday that the Foreign Secretary would implement a "two-track approach," which would entail direct financial support for British citizens and ways to find solutions for the energy market problems enlarged by the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic and the Ukraine crisis.

Last week, UK energy regulator Ofgem announced an 80% increase in the energy price cap to £3,549 ($4,194) per year due to start on October 1 because of rising global energy prices and inflation, which hit its highest in 40 years. Since April 1st, the energy price cap had stood at £1,971. Ofgem CEO Jonathan Brearley warned that energy prices are likely to keep increasing, and called on the country's future PM to take new measures to tackle the problem.
