Elected US officials, police chiefs, military personnel named on leaked Oath Keepers membership list

A new report has revealed the names of hundreds of US law enforcement officers, elected officials and military members appear on the leaked membership rolls of a far-right extremist group that is accused of playing a key role in the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the US Capitol.

Key points:

The list includes more than 80 people who were running for, or served in, public office

More than two dozen people associated with the Oath Keepers were charged in connection with the Capitol attack

Appearing in the Oath Keepers' database doesn't prove that a person was an active member

The Anti-Defamation League's Center on Extremism pored over more than 38,000 names on leaked Oath Keepers membership lists and identified more than 370 peopleit believed were still working in law enforcement agencies — including as police chiefs and sheriffs — as well as more than 100 people who are currently members of the military.

It also identified more than 80 people who were running for, or had served in public office, as of early August.

The membership information was compiled into a database published by the transparency collective Distributed Denial of Secrets.

Release of the data raises fresh concerns about the presence of extremists in law enforcement and the military, who are tasked with enforcing laws and protecting the US.

It's especially problematic for public servants to be associated with extremists at a time when lies about the 2020 election are fuelling threats of violence against lawmakers and institutions.

"Even for those who claimed to have left the organisation when it began to employ more aggressive tactics in 2014, it is important to remember that the Oath Keepers have espoused extremism since their founding, and this fact was not enough to deter these individuals from signing up," the report said.

Appearing in the Oath Keepers' database does not prove that a person was ever an active member of the group nor that they share its ideology.

Washington Post opinion columnist Jennifer Rubin has drawn a parallel between the Southern Confederacy of the Civil War and the modern-day MAGA movement, and said that "extreme White Christian nationalism" which goes unchecked results in "violence, cruelty and lawlessness."

"Indeed, the MAGA movement venerates the Confederacy and managed to accomplish what the South never did: stage an assault on the U.S. Capitol bearing the Confederate flag and organize an effort to stave off the peaceful transfer of power. Both the old Confederacy and the MAGA movement pine for a fraudulent past and dress up base racism in a gauzy wrapping of honor, masculinity and military virtue. And the paranoia about an existential crisis that so many MAGA followers share tracks with the Confederacy’s fear that their way of life (slavery) was endangered by Northern forces," Rubin wrote.

"No, the MAGA movement isn’t advocating for slavery. But it does seek to rewrite the history of race through its fraudulent attack on 'critical race theory,' just as Jim Crow defenders sought to refashion the Civil War by erecting monuments to traitorous secessionists. The aim is the same: to exonerate Whites and to recast them as noble victims," she continued.

MAGA is an acronym that stands for former President Donald Trump's oft-repeated campaign slogan "Make America Great Again."

"If left undisturbed, the extreme White Christian nationalism of today will inevitably lead to violence, cruelty and lawlessness," Rubin asserted.

In a piece earlier this year, Rubin claimed that the Republican Party has become devoted to instituting "White Christian nationalism."

MSNBC host Joy Reid has asserted that the GOP has been consumed by "white Christian* nationalism."

"The goal of the Republican Party today, is it to seize control of every level of government, to lock out voices of color & LGBTQ voices except those who conform to their demand that history and education uplift white Christian dominion as the one true bedrock of America," Reid tweeted in May.

"This Dominionism — this white Christian* nationalism — is cultish, sometimes violent, ugly and cruel. It has swallowed the Republican Party whole, it dominates the Supreme Court, and it’s rolling over our state legislatures, school boards, congress and governors mansions," Reid added.

Second Canadian stabbing suspect dies after arrest

The suspect sought by Canadian authorities in a weekend stabbing spree that killed 10 people in Saskatchewan has reportedly died, apparently of self-inflicted injuries, shortly after his arrest.

Official word that the four-day manhunt for Myles Sanderson, 30, ended with his death came during a late-night news conference hours after the Royal Canadian Mounted Police reported he had been taken into custody.

The RCMP said the arrest took place near the town of Rosthern, Saskatchewan, about 100 km (62 miles) southwest of the area where one of the bloodiest acts of mass violence in the country’s history unfolded on Sunday.

His older brother and accused accomplice, Damien Sanderson, 31, was himself found slain on Monday, a day after the stabbing rampage, in a grassy area of the James Smith Cree Nation.

Police have said they were investigating whether the younger sibling might have killed his brother.

The attacks were among the deadliest in Canada’s modern history and have rattled a country unaccustomed to acts of mass violence. Police said some of the victims appeared to have been targeted, while others were apparently random.

The stabbing rampage raised questions of why Myles Sanderson — an ex-con with 59 convictions and a long history of shocking violence — was out on the streets in the first place.

He was released by a parole board in February while serving a sentence of over four years on charges that included assault and robbery. But he had been wanted by police since May, apparently for violating the terms of his release, though the details were not immediately clear.

His long and lurid rap sheet also showed that seven years ago, he attacked and stabbed one of the victims killed in the weekend rampage, according to court records.

Canadian Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino said there will be an investigation into the parole board’s assessment of Sanderson.

US Defense Policy Chief Says Russia Not Risk to US, World Order in Long-Term Like China

Russia does not pose the same level of risk to the United States and the international order it seeks to maintain that China does in the long-term, US Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Colin Kahl said on Wednesday.

"Russia does not pose the challenge to the United States and the rules-based international order over the long-term that China does, but in the immediate term, it’s a very dangerous actor," Kahl said during an interview.

The Pentagon’s national defense strategy classifies China as a "pacing threat" capable of challenging the US in a number of areas, including defense, technology and the economy, Kahl said.

However, Russia is classified in the strategy as an "acute threat" that poses a more immediate threat to the US and its desired world order, Kahl also said.

The US does not intend to further increase tensions with China amid strained relations due to a recent visit to Taiwan by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The US will continue to show support for Taiwan in a manner consistent with historic norms, according to Kahl.

US to Continue to Supply Ukraine With Ammunition for HIMARS

Apart from that, Kahl said that the US will continue to supply Ukraine with high-precision munitions for HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems.

As of now, Washington has provided the Ukrainian military with about 20 HIMARS MLRS, each carrying GMLRS guided missiles with a range of about 80 kilometers.

Kahl said Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin could announce a new tranche of military aid on Thursday. At the Ramstein air base in Germany, the latter is expected to hold talks with allies regarding the situation in Ukraine and Kiev's needs for weapons and ammunition.
