Eth.link domain sold for $852k in unique situation

Interesting. The Ethereum Name Service has been hacked. Its DNS points to 199.59.243.222 which leads to some kind of phishing site. The correct IP address is 104.18.166.219 which is working fine. Wazzup?
Turns out that the Ethereum Name Service wasn't hacked but the domain (eth.link) got sold off by GoDaddy. Seems pretty shady to me. The reason this came to my attention is that I use the DNS-over-HTTPS service provided by ENS (it still works with the correct IP).
Meanwhile, Kiwi Farms gets banned by Cloudflare and Vanwanet goes down.
Coincidence or a multi-pronged attack?

The previous registrant of eth.link set the domain up as a resolving system for .eth domains in the Ethereum Name Service (ENS). ENS domains donโt resolve in normal browsers, so eth.link was set up to allow any domain entered at the third level to resolve to the correct website. For example, example.eth would resolve if you typed in example.eth.link.
A lot of people used eth.link, and some services apparently also used it (although my repeated requests on Twitter for an example of a service using it did not result in an example).
Unfortunately for people who used eth.link, the domainโs registrant Virgil Griffith landed in prison for trying to help North Korea evade sanctions. So he wasnโt available when it came time to renew the domain.
