Pritzker activates National Guard as more migrants arrive in Chicago

CHICAGO - Governor JB Pritzker has issued a disaster declaration and called up National Guard members to help with the waves of migrants being bused to Chicago.

So far, more than 500 migrants have been bused to Chicago from Texas. On Wednesday, Governor Pritzker issued an emergency disaster proclamation as the state braces for many more.

"That's why I'm signing this proclamation today to ensure that these men, women and children get the services they need shelter, food, medicine," said Governor Pritzker.

Flanked by reps from all levels of Illinois government at the State of Illinois Building, Governor Pritzker said that declaration will free up resources for the statewide response.

Plus, he's activating 75 Illinois National Guard members to help with logistics. Everyone involved admits they're scrambling to respond to each bus, because they say Governor Greg Abbott and his entire Texas government are giving zero notice and zero information.

"He's shut those off from us. So, it is a manufactured crisis by ambush to be very clear," said Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

Mayor Lightfoot says she's had productive talks with suburban mayors who were upset migrants unexpectedly showed up at their hotels. But she says communities around the state may need to step up.

"We are now 11 buses deep. And we know from speaking with our counterparts in New York and DC that this will not relent," said Grace Hou, Secretary, Illinois Department of Human Services.

Both Lightfoot and Pritzker accuse the Texas governor of trying to inflame anti-immigrant sentiment, even with people here legally and seeking asylum.

Lightfoot also suggests federal money going to Texas should come to Chicago instead.

"We should not, and taxpayer dollars should not be used to pay for this kind of callous, inhumane treatment on the part of someone who is racing to the bottom for a political stunt. Those monies need to be reprogrammed and come to us," said Lightfoot.

Governor Pritzker says they're looking into whether Governor Abbot's actions are legal. They’re also seeking federal help to pay for this.

Patreon Denies Hosting Child Sexual Abuse Material Amid Security Team Cuts

The company denies that recent job cuts are due to Patreon turning a blind eye to child sexual abuse material circulating on the platform.

Patreon is denying accusations that the site has been helping parents monetize sexualized images of their children.

Patreon refuted the allegations amid more job cuts. Last week, the platform laid off five members of its security team. On Tuesday, Patreon then announced(Opens in a new window) it was slashing another 80 jobs, reducing its headcount by 17%, citing the economic downturn.

The staff cuts to the security team prompted one critic on TikTok named Michael McWhorter—who has 4.9 million followers—to accuse(Opens in a new window) Patreon of turning a blind eye to the child sexual abuse imagery that can appear on the platform.

McWhorter cited a Glassdoor review(Opens in a new window) from an alleged former Patreon employee, which claims Patreon told staff to avoid taking down content featuring minors that was flagged as sexual.

“We are being told specifically by management and executives NOT to take down content that is illegal or was reported as sexual in nature involving minors unless the police make contact with legal or we have an order by a court,” the reviewer claims.

Operation targeting online child sex abuse nets 141 arrests across Southern California

Authorities arrested 141 people across Southern California — most of them on suspicion of possessing child sexual abuse material — as part of a weeklong operation targeting online abuse, officials said Wednesday.

The effort was spearheaded by the long-running Los Angeles Regional Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, which comprises dozens of law enforcement agencies led by the LAPD. The results of the operation, which was conducted Sept. 6-12, were announced at a news conference outside Los Angeles police headquarters early Wednesday.

LAPD Capt. Jeff Bratcher said many predators take advantage of the anonymity of the internet to target victims — for example, by infiltrating online gaming sites where they might try to convince a child to send images of themselves in exchange for virtual credits that can be used to make in-game purchases. The rise of esports and social media platforms in recent years has caused a surge in abuse reports, he said.

“When we first started in 2004, we started LAPD’s ICAC because we received 458 tips that year. In 2019 that number rose to 8,500. In 2020, 2021, both years, were over 24,000. This year so far, we’re over 25,000, so we should end the year with over 36,000 cybertips,” he said in an interview after the news briefing. “And each one of these tips was one more potential child victim.”

Although parents are “so used to seeing digital devices in their kids’ hands,” he said, he encouraged them to more closely monitor their children’s internet activity.

“It’s not the same stranger in a van that your mom and dad and my mom and dad warned us about; it’s a whole different type of threat,” he said. “And they never really know who they’re talking to.”

Among those arrested, the majority were wanted on suspicion of possessing, distributing or manufacturing child sexual abuse material, authorities said. An additional 18 people were booked for parole or probation violations, six were wanted for sexual abuse of a minor, and two each for the charges of statutory rape and pimping. Three people were arrested on suspicion of causing a domestic disturbance.

Investigators pursued new leads while also targeting people who had previously been arrested, Bratcher said.
