One of the landmark developments I always recommend studying is the Nike Zeus program. This was all developed before the microprocessor and even TTL and it underscores the challenge of intercepting missiles,as well as the scale. To have a meaningful engagement envelope, you have to see the missile when it is "below" you so that you can hit it when it is "above" you - or on the horizon off to the side of you. You also have to figure this stuff is flying faster than most bullets - so you're shooting telephone poles twice as fast as a bullet at basketballs screaming in at seven times faster than a bullet or more. It really puts the relative timing into perspective.
