By Clay Holtzman – Staff Writer

Mar 11, 2011, 5:45pm

Two lifelong friends, including the daughter of Costco CEO Jim Sinegal, who founded a Medina-based charity have opened a girls school in Rwanada.

Suzanne Sinegal McGill and Shalisan Foster, who founded the nonprofit Rwanda Girls Initiative in 2008, opened the Gashora Girls Academy last month. The boarding school will accommodate up to 270 students and has an initial class of 90; each subsequent incoming class will be capped at 90.

The project was developed with contributions from architecture firm MulvanyG2 in Bellevue, Seattle law firm Perkins Coie and accounting firm Clark Nuber. Washington State University helped design an agriculture program that would provide the school with operating revenue while two colleges at the University of Washington helped provide business guidance and design a methodology for program evaluation.

Shalisan Foster is a vice president of the Rwanda Girls Initiative’s board of directors and a managing trustee of the Kirkland-based Foster Foundation. Suzanne Sinegal McGill is the president of the Rwanda Girls Initiative's board and is an adviser to the Bellevue-based Sinegal Family Foundation started by her parents, Jim and Janet.
