first off having been on both sides of this, the only thing you can do is be supportive to your friend and the other thing both of you have to realize is that this is his battle and nothing can be done really to stop it if its going to happen they will find a way, no amount of calling for help does the trick. However they are calling for help the issue is its like dealing with a child who does not know how to vocalize their emotional state. The one thing you can do is talk to them let them lead the convo get them to calm down and distract. But i can tell you calling the police especially in this climate will do more harm than good. Best option have your friend look up treatment options like talk therapy and yes i know they help create school shooters but if it is more based on CBT and combine some DBT elements the guy has a chance. Tough love and support at the same time. He obviously is feeling something just gotta help him figure out what it is. But also the support for loved ones is incredibly hard doing this which is why therapy is the best answer but drugs and locking someone up not always the best solution and in some ways th last solution.
while it is possible for a total psychotic break to happen to even the most normal person it does make it tougher when the other person is larger and could hurt the other person. It may seem like walking on eggshells and when someone is in that state it is hard for them to even hear people are willing to listen because he may not see a way out.
