you're talking about something that happened 50 years ago.

you're putting all turks into the same box, present day.

i went to turkey as a teenager. the first time out of the country and i was startled by culture shock. i was scared. i went for a month, and by the end of the first couple of days, i was fine and adjusted to my surroundings.

i went back 5 years ago, and it was completely different. the culture had changed and i had changed as well. i've traveled a lot since i was 16 and much more familiar with different cultures now.

my daughter went with me this time. she was in her mid twenties and had never left the country so she was deeply culture shocked to the point of crying and scared, just like i was the first time.

after about an hour of talking to her, about how ancient the city is, about the people, etc. she calmed down. the next day, she was out and about by herself completely adjusted to her surroundings.

in the 80's i went to jamaica with my new husband. he had never left the country and he was so shocked that he was in a country of black people. he felt threatened. it took about a day for him to adjust. he ended up befriending so many people. we rented a motorcycle and he would ride up into the countryside and come back to happy that we had gone there. he apologized numerous times about how wrong and small minded he was, even to the countrymen.

so your wife had an incident with some people. what if it had happened in the usa? were you going to say that all american's are animals?

don't color a whole country of people a certain way just because of one incident. it's unfair.

shame on you.

bigot and racist

my daughter went to berlin a few years ago and loved kreuzberg and the food. now it is mostly turkish food and very popular.

regarding my other comment, yes i'm sensitive to people constantly dissing turks. you show your ignorance when you do that. turkey is a destination for tourists internationally, swarming with tourists, with tons of women traveling solo. it's not this crime ridden place, if you're smart. there is crime everywhere, obviously even here in the usa. people need to always be situationally aware of their surroundings. don't blame a whole culture and country just because "something happened"

i also can't stand when people paint nyc with broad strokes as a "jungle". you can say that about so many cosmopolitan cities. there 9 million people here. yes, shit is going to happen with that many people. if you look at other cities, like l.a. or san fran, or philly or other such cities, the crime is thru the roof and they don't have as many people living there. so from a percentage standpoint, nyc is actually a walk in the park….just don't walk in central park at night. the fact is you shouldn't walk in any park at night, anywhere and if you do, you're just stupid. don't blame the city.

homogeneous upstate cities in ny are full of cults. there's that. or there's lots of masons, if you're into that sort of thing.

as far as turkey goes, if that's what you're referring to with you "iron grip" statement, Erdogan has a thing about left politics. they try very hard to influence the people with things that we are struggling with here in the u.s. things like trangenderism in full display on tv, keeping sex out of media. he wants things conservative. he goes too far sometimes but one needs to remember it is a muslim country, as many asian countries are. as far as the women with covered heads, it's their choice. there are no mandates. people tend to be conservative there. don't make the mistake of thinking that since they are muslim, that they are middle eastern. they are a mix but mostly asian. and since they are ottoman's who conquered many different cultures, along with turkic mongols and turkic tatars, they are mostly homogeneous now,but with lots of different dna running thru their veins making native people look very different
