NASA teams stand down on Artemis I preparation for Tuesday ahead of Tropical Storm Ian

NASA officials decided during a meeting Saturday morning to halt preparations for a potential launch of Artemis I on Tuesday while monitoring the path of Tropical Storm Ian. Parts of Florida are in the storm's path and the Governor has issued a state of emergency ahead of the storm that may develop into a Category 2 or Category 3 hurricane early next week. WPBF 25 First Warning Weather meteorologists and the National Hurricane Center forecast South Florida will begin to see the effects of Ian Tuesday into Wednesday. NASA engineers will make a final decision about the rollback Sunday after further data gathering and analysis. If the decision is confirmed, the process of rolling back the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft to the Vehicle Assembly Building would begin late Sunday night or early Monday morning, officials say. NASA says this decision-making process allows the agency to protect employees by completing a safe roll in time so that they can then address the needs of their families. They say it also protects the option to go forward with another launch opportunity in the current window if the weather predictions become favorable. This would be the third attempt to launch the unmanned Artemis I rocket after the second attempt was scrubbed earlier this month due to a problem fueling the rocket. The first attempt was scrubbed on Aug. 29 because a bleed test to get engines to the proper temperature range for liftoff was not successful, and ran out of time in the two-hour launch window.

Residents across Palm Beach County Prepare For Possible Hurricane

NORTH PALM BEACH, Fla. —

As Tropical Storm Ian's path forecasts a hit to Florida as a hurricane, some residents are already preparing. In North Palm Beach, WPBF 25 News spoke with a number of people getting gas and getting prepared with gas canisters in hand. While the exact location of landfall isn't yet known, these people said they aren't taking their chances. Stay Prepared: WPBF 25 News coverage on hurricanes "Most people think there is something wrong with this guy, but with my groceries, I'm always stocked, I have a freezer out back and things like this," said Ralph Moscoso, who getting gas Friday morning. "My generators — I pull them out at least one twice a year and run them, so when something like this comes up, my end of the deal is very minimal." If people do decide to get extra gas, it's important to store it in a safe area when they get home. It's also important to keep some gas for any power equipment people may need to use like chainsaws or generators.
