Chinese President Xi Jinping removed from power in a coup? Here's what we know so far

 

Social media on Saturday was bubbling with speculations that Chinese President Xi Jinping was deposed in a coup that began unfolding when he was away in Samarkand attending the SCO Summit which commenced on September 14.

 

However, no international news outlet's report has given credence to these rumours and TOI on Sunday said that the Chinese foreign ministry has also remained silent on this topic. Some websites said the rumours were unfounded and they were part of an anti-Xi conspiracy.

 

These rumours come before the Chinese Communist Party’s 20th National Congress on October 16 where Xi is expected to secure power for an unprecedented third term of five years.

 

Xi, who has ruled with an iron fist since 2018, has amassed power the likes of which have not been witnessed since Chairman Mao Zedong. Back in 2018, the Chinese authorities approved the removal of the two-term limit on the presidency, which effectively allowed Xi Jinping to remain in power for life.
