Asian country hit with shortage of national dish

Extreme weather has damaged the cabbage crop in South Korea, driving up prices and leaving kimchi in short supply

South Koreans face soaring costs for kimchi, a key staple of their daily diets, after extreme heat and flooding rains wiped out much of the country’s cabbage crop, making the pickled radish dish far more expensive to make and increasingly difficult to buy.

Prices for the cabbage used to make the most common type of kimchi have more than doubled in the past year and have surged 41% in just the past month to about 3,300 won ($2.32) per kilogram, according to data from the state-run Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corp. Prices for white radish used in another popular type of kimchi have surged even more in the past year, by 146%, to more than 2,800 won.

The increases couldn’t come at a much worse time, given that South Koreans are already being squeezed by historically high inflation and are heading into kimchi-making season in November, when families typically produce stockpiles of pickled vegetables to eat during the winter months. “Every time I go grocery shopping, I see the prices of vegetables going up,” Seoul resident Hong Seong-jin told Arirang News.

With costs of making the iconic staple at home soaring, consumers are increasingly looking to buy factory-made kimchi. However, shipments of the product to supermarkets have dropped by about half from normal levels, and supplies have “completely disappeared” from online shops, YTN News reported last week.

Major kimchi makers, including Daesang and CheilJedang, have raised their prices by 10-11%, and more increases are expected. Many consumers jokingly refer to the pickled radish as “geumchi,” suggesting that it costs as much as gold.

Restaurants have responded by being stingier with kimchi, which is historically included with many meals as a free side dish. For instance, a chicken restaurateur in Seoul told YTN that he’s charging 3,000 won when customers request a small serving of kimchi. A head of cabbage costs three times the price of a raw chicken, he explained.

South Korea’s consumer price index jumped 5.7% from a year earlier in August after climbing 6.3%, a 24-year high, in July. Food prices have risen even more, running 8% higher than a year earlier for two straight months.

Prices for some popular foods are rising at a much faster pace. For instance, fried chicken prices surged 11.4% on year in July. The average price of gimbop, a popular rice dish rolled in seaweed paper, jumped 11.5%, exceeding 3,000 won for the first time, according to the Korea Consumer Agency. Gimbop sold for as little as 1,000 won at some Seoul eateries just a few years ago. A bowl of jajangmyeon, or black bean noodles, now costs 6,300 won, on average, up 15.3% on year.

Thousands of Italian firms on brink of closure – media

Small and medium-sized businesses can’t cope with soaring energy bills, Corriere della Sera reports

Over 100,000 businesses in Italy are in danger of closing down due to soaring energy bills, the news outlet Corriere della Sera reported on Saturday, citing Carlo Sangalli, head of the Italian business association Confcommercio.

“Already today many companies are reorganizing or reducing services… Between now and the first half of 2023, at least 120,000 small businesses in the service sector are at risk… This is a cautious estimate that does not take into account the largest companies,” Sangalli told the news outlet.

According to the official, the situation could lead to the loss of more than 370,000 jobs. Sangalli noted that energy prices in Italy are much higher than in other countries, which puts a strain on small and medium-sized businesses.

“In terms of energy costs, our hotels, bars, restaurants and stores will pay 40-60% more on their bills this year than in Germany, and three times that than in France,” Sangalli said.

He noted that the energy crisis may deal the final blow to many businesses that have already been made vulnerable by the Covid-19 pandemic. The official said the country needed “good reforms and good investments” that will “make our country work better and in a simpler way,” and called for some of the support measures introduced during the pandemic to be reinstated.

Italy, along with other EU countries, has been battling record-high inflation. Annual inflation in the country reached 8.4% in August, driven largely by energy costs. Italy relies on imports for nearly 75% of its energy. At the start of this year, it was importing 40% of its gas from Russia, but in July its Russian purchases dropped to 25% due to sanctions. Earlier this month, Italy lost much of its supplies from Russia when Gazprom halted flows via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline due to technical issues.

According to a recent survey, over 70% of Italians are having difficulty or are simply unable to pay their energy bills. Nine out of ten plan to cut spending in order to pay for energy, which they intend to do by curtailing going to restaurants, bars, on holidays and buying clothing.

Iran summons Western envoys

Tehran summoned the British and Norwegian ambassadors over their countries’ “hostile” and “interventionist” support for protests

The Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned the British and Norwegian ambassadors on Saturday, amid anti-government protests broadly supported by the West.

The British envoy, Simon Shercliff, was asked to explain the “hostile” tone of UK-based Persian media, while Norway’s Sigvald Hauge was questioned over the “interventionist stance” of Norway’s Iranian-born parliament speaker, Masud Gharahkhani, Iran’s ISNA news agency reported on Sunday.

Shercliff was summoned over Britain’s hosting of Iran International, Manoto TV, and BBC Persian, Iran International reported. Based in London and funded by Saudi Arabia, Iran International’s pro-opposition line has drawn Tehran’s ire before, and the network has been accused of bias by its own reporters.

The ministry views these British-hosted outlets as interfering in its internal affairs.

Hauge was asked to explain the “interventionist” remarks of Gharahkhani, who posted a video to Twitter this week backing the ongoing protests in Iran. "If my parents had not made the choice to flee in 1987, I would have been one of those fighting for my life on the streets,” he declared in the video.

Violent demonstrations have taken place in cities and towns across Iran for over a week, following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody. She was reportedly detained for wearing an “improper” hijab. While casualty figures from the protests vary wildly, Iran’s state media said on Saturday that 41 police and demonstrators have been killed since September 17.

The protests have received considerable attention from Western politicians and media outlets, with the US on Friday lifting some restrictions on providing internet services to Iran in a bid to help demonstrators organize and share footage from the protests.

Iranian officials have alleged that forces from “outside the country” are working to stir up unrest over Amini’s death. At least one foreign NGO, the San Francisco-based United for Iran, has admitted this, with its director telling The Guardian that his team has been organizing protesters for several months.

In the US, the CIA-backed National Endowment for Democracy has been financingthe opposition in Iran for several years, and is currently promoting one of its grant recipients as a source of authoritative coverage on the protests.

Britain to get more immigrants – government

Despite immigration being at the forefront of the Brexit debate, the UK’s Conservative government wants more foreign workers

The British government has revealed its economic growth plan, which aims to drag the UK out of recession with tax cuts and increased immigration. While Prime Minister Liz Truss has promised to crack down on illegal entry to the UK, her government wants to recruit more skilled, unskilled, and seasonal workers from abroad.

Unveiled by Truss and Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng on Friday, the government’s growth plan includes the steepest tax cuts in 50 years – with the richest earners looking at a reduction of the top rate of income tax from 45% to 40%, and lower-paid employees expecting a reduction of the basic rate from 20% to 19%. Combined with handouts for Britons facing spiraling energy bills, the package is expected to cost the UK £161 billion ($174 billion) over the next five years.

Kwarteng hopes to offset this cost by flooding the UK with foreign labor. Claiming that immigration “plays an important role in economic growth, productivity, and innovation,”the chancellor’s plan states that “the government will set out a plan in the coming weeks to ensure the immigration system supports growth whilst maintaining control.”

The document states that “significant inflows from migration” could help bolster Britain’s economy.

While the plan highlights skilled immigrants as key to economic growth, The Times reported that Home Secretary Suella Braverman will expand a scheme allowing farmers and producers to hire unskilled workers from overseas for longer than the current limit of six months, while Truss will likely lift the current 40,000 annual cap on seasonal workers.

These decisions will likely leave many of the Conservative Party’s voter base upset. Truss backed Brexit after the referendum successfully passed in 2016, in large part due to Conservative voters’ resentment over high levels of immigration during the preceding decades.

While Truss has promised to crack down on the record numbers of illegal immigrants entering the UK by sea, she was accused by rival Rishi Sunak’s team of betraying Brexit voters and showing her “true remainer colors”by backing increased immigration during the party’s leadership contest last month.

Russia replaces top general after mobilization call

The commander responsible for the army’s logistics and technical support has been relieved of his duties

Colonel General Mikhail Mizintsev has been appointed Russia’s deputy defense minister in charge of “material and technical support,” the ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

Mizintsev is replacing Army General Dmitry Bulgakov, who the Defense Ministry said is moving to an unspecified position.

The reshuffle comes three days after President Vladimir Putin ordered a partial call-up of reservists to bolster Russia’s military operation in Ukraine

The 60-year-old Mizintsev led Russia’s top military coordination agency, the National Defense Management Center, for eight years and oversaw the delivery of humanitarian aid during Moscow’s campaign against militants in Syria.

After Russia sent troops to Ukraine in February, Mizintsev began delivering briefings on humanitarian matters on the ground. He was also in charge of organizing the evacuation of civilians from Mariupol in March.

Bulgakov has been involved with the military since the 1970s. In 2016, he was awarded the ‘Hero of Russia’ star, the country’s highest military honor.

Britain seeks to secure American LNG supplies – Bloomberg

European nations are stocking up on gas ahead of winter

UK authorities are looking for proposals from US exporters of liquified natural gas (LNG) to ensure supplies for the nation’s domestic buyers under long-term contracts for as long as 20 years, Bloomberg reported on Thursday, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The UK’s inquiries come amid a severe power supply crunch that has hit Europe over the past year, and is expected to deepen ahead of the coldest months. European nations have been trying to stock up on natural gas as well as to diversify their fuel sources in the long term.

The volumes Britain is trying to obtain haven’t been disclosed, but the agency reported that officials are seeking to buy LNG indexed to the US benchmark Henry Hub gas price, and delivered on an ex-ship basis, where the seller has to deliver the cargo to a fixed buyer and location.

The energy crisis in Europe was exacerbated in early July when gas flows from Russia were reduced due to Ukraine-related sanctions and technical problems with the Nord Stream 1 pipeline.

Britain, which doesn’t rely heavily on Russian gas supplies, gets most of its fuel via undersea pipelines from Norway, and LNG shipments. The UK also receives fuel from its own production.

However, London is not entirely protected in the face of the current Europe-wide supply crunch.

On Wednesday, UK authorities announced plans to spend £40 billion ($45 billion) to cap wholesale gas prices for six months. Costs have surged to record highs this year, threatening average consumers and manufacturers with unfordable utility bills.

Nepal offers to trade in national currencies with Russia

The country’s envoy says the mechanism should be similar to the one between Russia and India

Moscow and Kathmandu could create a mechanism for mutual settlements in the national currencies, Nepal’s ambassador to Russia, Milan Raj Tuladhar, has told RIA Novosti.

“It would be a barter trade based on our own currencies, without involving others. It should be a banking cooperation between the central banks of Nepal and Russia,” Tuladhar said. He believes it is possible to create a mechanism similar to the one between Moscow and New Delhi that uses the rupee and ruble in trade.

Tuladhar said that Nepal is interested in buying Russian fertilizers and technical equipment, while in exchange it could boost deliveries of tea and leather products to Russia.

“Right now, the volume of trade between Nepal and Russia is small. But if there are direct flights, more exchanges between Russia and Nepal, definitely more prospects will open up. For example, we need Russian fertilizers. We are engaged in agriculture, so we need a lot of fertilizers. Similarly, we can increase tea exports to Russia because the Russians like tea,” the ambassador was cited as saying.

He noted that while currently the majority of Nepal’s trade is with China and India, its immediate neighbors, Kathmandu is keen to diversify its trade with more countries in Eurasia.

“It will be an advantage for Nepal to develop trade with Russia,” he stated.

Russia has been eagerly moving away from the dollar and euro in trade settlements, viewing trade in national currencies as more reliable. It has also been promoting the notion among its trade partners. Last week, India announced it will soon launch trade in rupees with Russia, after the State Bank of India agreed to facilitate a payment mechanism that would enable it to do so.

In August, Russia’s payment volumes in the Chinese yuan made the country the third largest market for the currency in the world outside mainland China. Also last month, Turkey and Russia signed a roadmap for economic cooperation that introduced the Russian ruble as a currency for bilateral trade, including for Russian natural gas supplies.
