Jeffrey Katzenberg, the DreamWorks head whose studio is part of an SEC probe into a number of movie houses' dealings with China, was a key organizer of President Obama's record-setting, nearly $15 million fundraiser last night, at which the president heaped acknowledgments on him, according to the pool report:
"I want to thank Jeffrey (Katzenberg) not just for this evening, but for his tenacious support and advocacy since we started back in 2007. He has consistently been there for me, through thick and through thin." As usual in his political stump speech, Potus said the 2008 campaign is sometimes "romanticised" by supporters, and “I have to remind them, no, I was there!" “The only person I don't have to remind is Jeffrey because he was there, through all the ups and downs, and occasionally he would call, and he would say, ‘Barack, I don't think that things are working the way they're supposed to.’ “
The probe is a larger one of the studios, and there's no early indication of targets of specific people. But Katzenberg - who is also a major donor to the pro-Obama super PAC Priorities USA Action - was involved in a high-level meeting with Vice President Joe Biden and China's VP Xi Jinping, according to the Times.
The activities of bundlers and major donors always has the potential to be an albatross for candidates, on either side - the business dealings of Sheldon Adelson, for instance, are certain to come up as he continues to pour money into the Republican side of the fight this fall. But in this instance, the level of people involved raises the bar of interest.
